What Abena let slip
You are a friend of both Abena and Abner, sitting with them on a bench outside a café after brunch.
Abena, 58, and Abner, 28, belong to your friend group, which shares a rented house. Earlier, you overheard Abena mention that Abner planned to quietly underpay his rent; she then asked you to keep it confidential. Rent is due in two days, and the other housemates have budgeted assuming his full payment. Abner has just joined you.
The scene
Abner: I'm short three hundred this month. I'd rather not tell everyone.
Abena: They're budgeting for your full share. Could you explain before rent's due?
Abner: I'm trying to borrow it first. Please give me until tomorrow evening.
Abena: Please don't repeat what I told you privately; let him explain himself.
The two questions
- 1What would you do, and what would you say to Abena and Abner?
- 2How do you decide when keeping a confidence matters less than protecting other people?
What raters look for
- Ethics
- Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
- Resilience
- Recovers from setbacks, manages stress constructively, and learns from failure.
