How to use these guides

  1. Find your school with the search box or by state, then check the format next to its name.
  2. Open the guide for the format, what the school says it looks for and local topics worth knowing. Do it again for every school on your list, since formats differ.
  3. Practice out loud in that format. Use the free MMI station to try a timed station, then work through the MMI questions with answers.

The format labels are MMI (a circuit of timed stations), traditional (conversational interviews), panel (several interviewers at once) and details in guide (the school mixes formats, uses another structure such as group or recorded interviews, has not published its format, or its published details are unclear). They come from each guide, which draws on the school's own admissions pages and the AAMC MSAR interview procedures report. Always check your invitation, because schools change formats between cycles.

Common questions

Do all medical schools use the MMI?

No. Some schools run a multiple mini interview (MMI), many use traditional or one-on-one interviews, a few use panels, and some mix formats, use group or recorded interviews or do not publish theirs. The label next to each school shows what its guide found. Formats change between cycles, so confirm yours in your interview invitation.

How do I find out which interview format my school uses?

Start with your invitation email and the school's admissions pages. The AAMC's MSAR interview procedures report also lists each US MD school's format. Each guide here summarizes what the school and the AAMC publish, and says plainly when something is not published.

Are the practice questions in the guides the school's real questions?

No. Schools generally do not publish their interview questions. The practice questions in our guides are examples we wrote to rehearse the kind of thinking the format asks for, not predictions of what you will be asked.

Does this page cover DO, Canadian and UK schools?

Yes. US MD and DO schools are grouped by state, Canadian schools by province and UK schools by country. Use the degree filter to see only MD or only DO schools.

My school is not listed. What should I do?

We add school guides regularly and this page updates as they are published. Until yours appears, the MMI practice guides on this page apply to any school, and the free MMI station lets you practice the format right now.

How should I practice once I have read my school's guide?

Answer out loud, with a timer, and review what you said. The free MMI station at /tools/mmi-timer does this without an account. Confetto adds an AI interviewer with follow-up questions and feedback, with a 7-day free trial and over 500 questions.
