Preparing for the UW School of Pharmacy interview
UW PharmD interview: two 25-minute one-on-ones, virtual or in person, the Husky Pharmacist traits UW tells you to read, and practice questions we wrote.

The University of Washington PharmD interview format
The University of Washington School of Pharmacy's interview process page says interviews are required and offered both virtually and in person. The interview day includes two one-on-one interviews with members of the PharmD admissions team, each about 25 minutes. The school describes the interview as a conversation led by an interviewer.
| Item | What UW says |
|---|---|
| Delivery | Virtual or in person |
| Interviews | Two one-on-one interviews, about 25 minutes each, with members of the PharmD admissions team |
| Also on the day | Meet and greet with faculty leadership and admissions staff, a Q&A with a panel of current PharmD students, an admissions overview session, and for in-person days an optional campus tour |
| Who is invited | Not everyone. Only applicants with a complete PharmCAS application are considered, after review of essays, recommendations, prerequisite coursework and cumulative GPAs |
| Timing | Interviews typically begin in fall and run through spring; most on-campus dates are in autumn and early winter |
| Decision | Most applicants receive a decision 1 to 2 weeks after the interview |
| Questions, scoring rubric, open or closed file | Not published |
UW reviews applications on a rolling basis, in the order received, and strongly encourages applicants to apply early and sign up for the earliest possible interview day.
What UW looks for
UW tells applicants to familiarize themselves with the values and attributes of the Husky Pharmacist before the interview, and says it aims to admit a class that will embody those traits on graduation. A Husky Pharmacist, per the school:
- Demonstrates expertise in medications, population health and practice that is fundamentally sound and state of the art
- Thinks critically, prioritizes effectively and identifies solutions
- Has strong decision-making skills and the ability to justify those decisions
- Works collaboratively with other health care professionals and values teamwork
- Demonstrates leadership, professional engagement and management skills
- Adapts and thrives as pharmacy, health care and society evolve
- Communicates well
The school also describes the pharmacist as a provider, practicing at the top of their license. That framing is worth reading before you decide how to talk about the profession.
How to prepare for UW
- Prepare for a conversation, not a puzzle. UW describes a conversation led by the interviewer. Practice giving a clear answer, then following the interviewer's thread.
- Map your stories to the Husky traits. Pick one story each for critical thinking, collaboration, leadership and adaptability.
- Be ready to justify decisions. One trait is the ability to justify decisions. Practice saying why you chose A over B and what you gave up.
- Prepare for two different interviewers. Each interview is about 25 minutes. Rework your best story so it is not word for word identical.
- Use the student panel. Prepare a question about experiential education or student life that is not answered on the website.
UW pharmacy practice questions (written by us, not UW)
UW does not publish its interview questions. These are ours, built from the Husky Pharmacist traits. Answer each aloud in about three minutes.
- Why pharmacy, and why as a provider rather than only a dispenser?
- Tell me about a decision you made with incomplete information. How did you justify it?
- Describe a time you worked on a team with a conflict in it.
- How do you decide what to prioritize when everything seems urgent?
- Pharmacy is changing quickly. What change do you think matters most, and how would you adapt?
- Tell me about a time you led without having formal authority.
- A patient is not taking a medication as prescribed. Walk me through your first three questions.
- How would you explain a complex medication plan to a patient and their caregiver?
- Tell me about a time you disagreed with a plan and spoke up.
- What have you learned about the pharmacist's role from the pharmacists you have observed?

A drill for two 25-minute interviews
- Write one story per Husky trait in three sentences each.
- Run a 25-minute mock with a friend who asks follow-ups, not new topics.
- Run a second 25-minute mock the next day with a different friend and a different mix of stories.
- After each, write down the question you answered worst and redo it.
- Practice both camera and in-person delivery.
Confetto's pharmacy school interview prep uses AI mock interviews that ask follow-up questions based on what you actually said and give rubric-based feedback afterward. The question bank has over 500 questions, and you can start with a 7-day free trial.
