UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy interview guide: format, timeline and practice questions

The UNC Eshelman PharmD interview format

The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy uses the Multiple Mini Interview. Its PharmD program details page describes it as a series of five interview stations consisting of timed interview scenarios. Its admissions FAQ says the MMI is built on scenarios or cases and will not test prior pharmacy knowledge.

What UNC looks for

UNC does not list MMI attributes. It says only that the stations will assess characteristics and attributes the committee considers important for success as a pharmacist. Its FAQ gives one useful hint: applicants with substantial pharmacy or health care experience often perform better in interviews because they have a deeper understanding of the profession. If you have little experience, it suggests volunteering, shadowing a pharmacist or talking with a pharmacist or other health care provider before your interview.

The cycle in brief

  • PharmCAS: opened July 9, 2026, with a priority deadline of October 1, 2026 and a final deadline of February 1, 2027.
  • Supplemental information: a free UNC form sent after your PharmCAS application is verified, due October 15, 2026 for priority applicants and February 15, 2027 for the final deadline.
  • Priority benefits: priority applicants receive priority consideration for an interview invitation, are eligible for the school's premier renewable scholarships and may hear earlier. The priority deadline is non-binding.
  • Rolling review: UNC reviews as applications arrive. Applicants are usually notified of decisions no later than the end of March.
  • Campuses: one PharmD delivered at Chapel Hill and Asheville, with a campus preference on the supplemental form.
  • Letters: two required, up to four reviewed, through PharmCAS only.

How to prepare for UNC

  • Prepare for five stations. Five stations is short. Each one counts, so avoid a slow start.
  • Do not memorize pharmacy facts. UNC says the MMI does not test prior pharmacy knowledge. Practice reasoning aloud instead.
  • Know the profession from experience. The school's FAQ points to experience as an advantage. Prepare two observations from shadowing or work about what pharmacists actually do.
  • Prepare for more than scenarios. UNC describes the stations as scenarios and says they assess attributes it does not list, so rehearse motivation and values answers too.
  • Use the MMI guides. Our MMI practice guide and MMI questions with answers cover timed-station structure.

UNC pharmacy practice questions (written by us, not UNC)

UNC does not publish its MMI scenarios. These are ours. UNC does not publish station length, so as our own assumption practice each as a timed station with about two minutes to think and five to answer.

  1. Why pharmacy, and what have you done to test that decision?
  2. A coworker tells you they made a small dosing error but asks you not to report it. What do you do?
  3. Describe a time you had to deliver difficult news.
  4. A patient asks whether they can stop a medication because they feel better. What do you say?
  5. You are working on a team and two members have a long-standing disagreement that is affecting the work. What do you do?
  6. What is one value you would not compromise on in a pharmacy career, and why?
  7. Tell me about a time you helped someone understand something complicated.
  8. A pharmacy has run out of a medication that a patient needs today. What would you do?
  9. How do you handle a situation where you do not know the answer?
  10. What does being a trusted health care professional mean to you?

A drill for a five-station MMI

  1. Pick five prompts from the list. As our own assumption, give yourself two minutes of planning and five minutes of speaking per prompt.
  2. Record yourself and check that you opened with a clear first move.
  3. Ask someone to read each prompt cold and pause to interrupt once.
  4. Redo your weakest station the next day.
  5. Add a sixth prompt about motivation for pharmacy to your rotation.
