Medicine Interviews in Australia and NZ: MMI, Dates and Questions

How medicine interviews work in Australia and New Zealand, school by school, with the dates for 2027 entry.

Many medical schools in Australia and New Zealand interview with an MMI, a circuit of short stations, while some use a panel. School-leaver programs pick mainly on UCAT ANZ and ATAR and interview from late November to January. Graduate-entry schools mostly pick on GPA and GAMSAT and interview in September and October, most of them through GEMSAS.

Dates for 2027 entry

  1. 3 March to 5 June 2026

UCAT ANZ booking. Booking opened 3 March, the standard deadline was 15 May and the final late deadline was 5 June 2026.

  2. 1 to 29 May 2026

GEMSAS applications for graduate-entry medicine (close 5pm AEST, 29 May). Supporting documents, including rural evidence, were due 15 June 2026.

  3. 1 July to 5 August 2026

UCAT ANZ testing window. Results go to universities in early September 2026 and count only for 2027 entry.

  4. September to October 2026

Graduate-entry interviews. GEMSAS sends interview offers in early September and schools interview in September and October, for example Wollongong in the week starting 17 September and Macquarie on 26 September. In New Zealand, Auckland holds its online general MMI for all shortlisted applicants at the same time on 8 September 2026.

  5. 25 to 30 September 2026

State admissions center deadlines for school-leaver medicine. VTAC timely applications closed 28 September. Through UAC, Charles Sturt preferences closed 25 September and UNSW and Western Sydney closed 30 September 2026.

  6. End of October to early November 2026

GEMSAS place offers. Further offers to fill vacancies follow from November 2026 to January 2027.

  7. Late November 2026 to January 2027

School-leaver interviews. Western Sydney and Charles Sturt interview in late November, the Newcastle/UNE Joint Medical Program assesses from 30 November to 11 December, and UNSW interviews Rural Entry applicants 23 to 27 November and other applicants 17 to 22 December or 12 to 13 January.

  8. December 2026 to February 2027

School-leaver offers. VTAC releases offer rounds on 23 December 2026 (for VCE and eligible Year 12 students) and 12 and 27 January 2027, with February rounds after. UNSW offers come through UAC on 8 and 21 January and 4 February 2027.

School-by-school guides

Each guide covers the school's interview format, how it picks who to interview, how the interview counts toward offers, and practice questions, with links to the school's own pages.

MMI, panel and semi-structured interviews

The MMI is the format you are most likely to meet.

MMI

You move through a set of short stations, each with its own scenario and its own interviewer.

  • Melbourne: Eight stations of about five minutes, with one assessor each.
  • Deakin: Up to six five-minute stations.
  • Monash: Six stations, each with two minutes of reading time and eight minutes of interview.
  • Western Sydney: About eight minutes per station.

Panel

Some schools use a panel instead.

  • UNSW: A structured interview with two interviewers, who may be academic staff, doctors or community representatives.
  • Flinders: A semi-structured interview of about 45 to 50 minutes before a small panel, normally an academic, a community member and a doctor. Every applicant gets the same scenarios and questions, and interviewers know only your name.

Not every school interviews everyone

The University of Sydney ranks most MD applicants on admissions test results.

  • Dubbo rural stream: Applicants are interviewed.
  • Indigenous Facilitated Entry: Applicants may be interviewed.
  • Tied applicants: Sydney may use an interview or a situational judgment test to separate applicants who are ranked equally.

How schools pick who to interview

School-leaver programs

They shortlist mostly on UCAT ANZ and ATAR.

  • Monash: Picks Victorian and rural applicants for its December interviews on UCAT ANZ score alone, then picks January interviewees on UCAT ANZ and ATAR weighted equally.
  • UNSW: Selects for interview on selection rank and UCAT ANZ score. General entry needs an ATAR of 96.00 and a UCAT ANZ percentile of 50 or above.
  • Western Sydney: Shortlists on UCAT ANZ, may weight its subtests, and checks the academic threshold only after the MMI. Its final offers are 75% interview and 25% UCAT ANZ.

Graduate-entry programs

They shortlist on GPA and GAMSAT.

  • Melbourne, Macquarie and UQ: Each combines GPA and GAMSAT equally to rank applicants for interview.
  • Wollongong is different: After GPA and GAMSAT hurdles, it ranks applicants 50% on Casper and 50% on admissions bonuses.

Rural and Indigenous pathways

These change the bar.

  • Rural under GEMSAS: You count as rural if you lived in an MM2 to MM7 area for five consecutive or ten cumulative years.
  • First Nations entry: Every GEMSAS school offers a First Nations entry pathway.
  • UQ: May use a lower interview threshold for rural-background applicants.
  • UNSW Rural Entry: Needs an ATAR of 91.00 and a UCAT ANZ percentile of 40.
  • Wollongong: Its Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander pathway needs neither Casper nor GAMSAT.

What interviewers assess

Interviews look at personal qualities, not grades.

  • Grades are not discussed. GEMSAS says academic results are not discussed and interviews are run by trained interviewers.
  • Common themes: Across the schools below, communication, ethics, empathy, teamwork, motivation for medicine and how you make decisions.

What each school lists

  • Monash: Advocacy, collaboration, critical thinking, empathy, ethical reasoning, motivation and resilience.
  • Melbourne: Cultural sensitivity, maturity, collaboration, reliability and communication.
  • Flinders: Quality of motivation, learning style, communication skills, pro-social attitude and approach to decision-making.
  • Deakin: Communication, teamwork, evidence-based practice, professionalism, effective use of resources and health promotion, among others.

Health care in their region

Many schools also test what matters for health care in their region.

  • Monash: Lists advocacy among its focus areas.
  • Wollongong: Its stations include rural, regional and remote health and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health.
  • Deakin: Lists commitment to rural and regional practice and social justice.
  • Auckland: Looks for social responsibility and a commitment to equitable access to health care.

Online or in person

It depends on the school, and GEMSAS says dates and formats vary by school.

  • Online: UQ, Deakin and Wollongong interview online, with live interviewers at Wollongong. Monash and Western Sydney run their MMIs by Zoom.
  • In person at UNSW: All domestic interviews, at Kensington or at a rural clinical campus for rural applicants.
  • In person at Macquarie: A face-to-face MMI for domestic applicants.
  • Either at Flinders: Adelaide applicants interview in person. Those interstate or more than 60 km away may interview online through Microsoft Teams.
  • Recorded at Auckland: The MMI is recorded, not live. At each of seven assessed stations you get 30 seconds to read the scenario and then 3 minutes to answer on camera on the Kira Talent platform.

New Zealand: Auckland and Otago

Auckland

Auckland takes students into medicine after a first year of the Bachelor of Health Sciences or Bachelor of Science (Biomedical Science) at Auckland, or as graduates.

  • 2027 entry: Interviewed first-year and graduate applicants are ranked on GPA (60%), UCAT ANZ (15%) and the MMI (25%).
  • 2028 entry: Casper replaces UCAT ANZ for domestic applicants and selection becomes 50% MMI and 50% Casper. Applications close 1 July 2027.
  • MAPAS: Auckland's Māori and Pacific Admission Scheme. Shortlisted applicants do the general MMI and a MAPAS Specialty Interview on Zoom covering academic preparation, cultural identity, whānau and social consciousness.
  • RRAS: Auckland's Regional Rural Admission Scheme. Applicants meet the same requirements as general applicants but are ranked separately for interview and offers.

Otago

Otago admits students into the MB ChB through Health Sciences First Year, Graduate and Alternative categories.

  • UCAT ANZ: Domestic First Year and Graduate applicants need a result from the year of application.
  • Dates: Health Sciences First Year and Graduate applications for 2027 entry ran from 1 July to 13 August 2026. The Alternative category has its own earlier window.
  • Alternative category: For domestic applicants only, with no UCAT ANZ. It picks people for a Zoom interview based on academic achievements, a statement of interest and a CV.
  • Equity groups: Otago also considers a Māori equity group, a New Zealand Resident Indigenous Pacific Origins group and a New Zealand Rural Origins group.

How to prepare

  • Find out the format first. A five-minute live station, a 45-minute panel and a three-minute recorded answer need different practice.
  • Practice out loud, timed. Speak against a timer, then review a recording of yourself.
  • Cover the usual topics. Work through ethical scenarios, teamwork stories and questions about rural health and Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Māori health.
  • Know your why. Be ready to explain why you want to study medicine in your own words.

Frequently asked questions

Do all medical schools in Australia interview?

No. The University of Sydney ranks most MD applicants on admissions test results. It interviews Dubbo stream applicants and may interview Indigenous Facilitated Entry applicants or applicants who are ranked equally.

How many interviews can I get through GEMSAS?

One. A GEMSAS application leads to one interview offer at most, and the standardized interview score may then be used by lower-preference schools. Melbourne's direct Guaranteed Entry, MD Rural and Indigenous pathways can add a second interview offer.

When are graduate-entry medicine interviews held?

GEMSAS releases interview offers in early September and holds interviews in September and October. Place offers follow at the end of October or early November.

How long is an MMI station?

It varies by school. Melbourne and Deakin stations run about five minutes, Monash and Western Sydney allow about eight minutes of interview per station, and Auckland gives 3 minutes to record each answer after 30 seconds to prepare.

Can I use my UCAT ANZ score for more than one year?

No. UCAT ANZ results cannot be carried over, so a 2026 result counts only for 2027 entry.

Are medicine interviews in Australia online?

Some are. UQ, Deakin, Wollongong, Monash and Western Sydney interview online, while UNSW and Macquarie interview domestic applicants in person.
