What happens on the day
Wollongong's interview is an online multiple mini-interview (MMI) with live interviewers. You move through a structured set of 8 stations.
- 8 stations. Each station is a separate short interview. Wollongong does not publish how long each station lasts.
- Online, live. Interviews run online with real interviewers, not recorded answers.
- What it assesses. The interview reflects UOW's values in medical education. It is blueprinted to assess communication, an empathetic and ethical approach, reflection, teamwork and decision-making in clinical and community settings.
- Briefing first. For 2027 entry, invited applicants got more details in early September and could join an interview briefing webinar on 7 September 2026.
Interviewed elsewhere? If you also interview at another GEMSAS school, Wollongong standardizes that interview score and uses it in place of its own.
How you get an interview
Wollongong is unusual. GPA and GAMSAT are only pass marks, and the interview list is ranked on Casper and UOW bonuses.
- GPA hurdle: 5.5. You need a weighted GPA of at least 5.5 out of 7. Your most recent year counts three times, the year before twice and the one before that once.
- GAMSAT hurdle: 50. Domestic applicants need at least 50 overall with no section below 50. GAMSAT is not used for ranking after that.
- Casper: 50% of the interview rank. A minimum Casper score is set each year based on the applicant pool. For 2027 entry the test dates were 12 April, 5 May, 14 May and 11 June 2026, and you are not eligible without a valid score.
- Bonuses: the other 50%. There are 12 UOW bonuses. They are weighted equally and they add up. The bonus form and all evidence were due by 5pm AEST on 15 June 2026.
The 12 UOW bonuses
Each bonus has its own rules and evidence, set out in the UOW MD Admissions Bonus guide. Missing or badly formatted evidence means no bonus.
- UOW first preference applicant, registered health professional, service commitment and sustained work experience.
- Rural work experience, rural high school education, Illawarra local resident (MM1) and NSW rural resident (MM2 to MM7).
- UOW graduate, UOW graduate with academic excellence (weighted GPA of 6.5 or higher), Indigenous health graduate and financial disadvantage.
How offers are decided
After the MMI, your interview score is combined with your bonuses to rank you for a place.
- Interview: 70%. Your MMI score is most of the final rank.
- Bonuses: 30%. The same UOW bonuses that helped you get an interview count again.
- Not GPA, GAMSAT or Casper. None of them are in the offer formula.
- Offer timing. First-round offers are due from late October to early November 2026, with any later offers from mid-December 2026 to mid-January 2027.
- No deferral. You cannot defer a place. If you decline, you must apply again in a later year.
Bonuses count twice. Because bonuses feed both the interview list and the offer rank, the bonus form matters as much as your test scores.
Other routes and dates for 2027 entry
Wollongong has about 109 places for 2027 entry, including up to 15 international places. Domestic applicants come in through the General, Rural or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander pathways.
Rural Entry Pathway
You need to have lived in an MM2 to MM7 area for 5 years in a row or 10 years in total. Rural applicants are ranked separately from General Entry applicants.
- Guaranteed interview. Rural applicants with a NSW rural origin who put UOW first in GEMSAS and meet the minimum requirements are offered an interview.
- Rurality adjustment. An adjustment applies in three tiers: regional (MM2), rural (MM3 to MM5) and remote (MM6 and MM7).
- Rural End-to-End track. 30 places where you live and study in rural NSW for all four years, starting at the Shoalhaven or Southern Highlands campus. At least 17 go to Rural Entry applicants.
- Rural time for everyone. All domestic students do Phase 3 of the course in a regional or rural location.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander pathway
You can apply directly to UOW with no application fee (or through GEMSAS, where fees apply), and you do not sit Casper or GAMSAT. UOW aims for 15% of places in each track to go to students from this pathway.
- Dates. For 2027 entry, direct applications opened on 2 March and closed on 31 August 2026. Interviews ran in rounds from late March to late September 2026.
- Two interviews. The same 8-station live online MMI, plus a Community interview with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members that explores your understanding of Indigenous health and social issues.
- Hurdles. A weighted GPA of 5.5 and confirmation of Aboriginality or Torres Strait Islander identity. Meeting both earns an interview offer.
Key dates (General and Rural)
- 1 to 29 May 2026. GEMSAS applications open and close.
- 15 June 2026. Bonus form, bonus evidence and rural documents due.
- Early September 2026. Interview offers were released.
- 17 to 25 September 2026. Online MMIs.
- 27 September 2026. Campus, place type and track nomination form due by 5pm AEST.
- 25 January 2027. Phase 1 starts.
How to prepare
- Prepare for Casper early. Casper decides half of your interview ranking, so practice typed and spoken situational answers well before your test date.
- Know the four years. Wollongong teaches across Wollongong, Shoalhaven and Southern Highlands plus rural hubs. Be ready to say why that model suits you.
- Practice teamwork and decisions. The stations are blueprinted on communication, ethics, reflection, teamwork and decision-making. Rehearse a scenario of each kind.
- Practice on video. Set up a quiet room, test your camera and sound, and rehearse talking to a live interviewer on screen.
Use your first degree. Wollongong is graduate entry. Have two or three real stories from study, work or service ready that show how you grew.
Practice questions
Questions in the style of a MMI (online) station, written for applicants to University of Wollongong (Doctor of Medicine). They are practice questions, not the school's own. Open one for what a strong answer does.
You've already completed a first degree. What happened during your undergraduate studies that made you decide to sit the GAMSAT and move into medicine?
Tell one honest turning point, link it to what you learned about medicine, and show the decision was tested over time.
You are a first-year medical student on a rural placement in a small country town. At the local pub on Saturday night, you see your supervising doctor drinking heavily. They are the only doctor on call at the local hospital tomorrow morning. What do you do?
Put patient safety first, stay within your role as a student, and name who you would talk to and how, without jumping to conclusions.
A friend who is also applying to medicine tells you in confidence that they exaggerated their rural background on their application to get into a rural entry pathway. They say it doesn't matter because they plan to work rurally anyway. How do you respond?
Weigh loyalty against fairness to genuine rural applicants, talk to your friend first, and explain why honesty matters in medicine.
You are a medical student on placement at a remote clinic. An older Aboriginal patient who mainly speaks their own language needs to discuss new test results, and the only person available to interpret is the patient's teenage grandson. What are your concerns, and what would you do?
Raise accuracy, privacy and the burden on the grandson, then look for a professional or Aboriginal health worker interpreter while respecting the patient's wishes.
Why do you think many doctors are reluctant to work in rural and remote areas, and what changes could encourage them to build careers outside the major cities?
Name real barriers such as isolation, training access and family, then suggest practical fixes rather than slogans.
Some people argue that doctors who enter medicine as graduates are more emotionally prepared for clinical work than those who come straight from school. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the entry pathway you've chosen?
Be balanced, avoid putting school leavers down, and connect your own experience to how you work in a team.
