Monash Medicine Interview (MMI): Format, Dates and Questions
What happens at Monash's medicine interview, how you get one, and how it counts toward your offer.
Monash interviews online over Zoom with a six-station MMI: 2 minutes to read each scenario, then 8 minutes of interview, about 70 to 80 minutes in all with briefings. The MMI counts for one third of your final ranking, equal to your ATAR aggregate and your UCAT ANZ score.
Key facts (2027 entry)
- Format
- Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) with six sequential stations
- Stations and timing
- 2 minutes reading plus 8 minutes interview per station (10 minutes each). The circuit takes 70 to 80 minutes including pre-briefing and debriefing.
- Online or in person
- Online via Zoom only
- When (2027 entry)
- December round: 2 and 3 December 2026 (Dean's Rural List) and 8 and 9 December 2026 (Victorian-based). January rounds: 5 and 6 January 2027 and 18 and 19 January 2027. Dates are subject to change.
- How applicants are picked
- December invites rank on UCAT ANZ total score only. January invites rank on ATAR aggregate and UCAT ANZ total, weighted equally.
- How the interview counts
- One third of the final ranking, equal to ATAR aggregate and UCAT ANZ total score
- Attempts
- You can sit the Monash MMI only once. Reapplicants are not re-interviewed.
- Other routes
- Indigenous Entry Scheme panel interview. International applicants sit the ISAT and a four-station MMI. Graduate entry is for listed Monash degrees.
What happens on the day
The MMI runs on Zoom.
- Book your own time. Invited applicants get an email and log in to an online system to book. Once that system closes, Monash does not allow changes or late requests.
- Six stations. You move through six stations in a row.
- 2 minutes, then 8. At each station you read a scenario for two minutes, then talk with an interviewer for eight minutes.
- 70 to 80 minutes in all. That is how long the full circuit takes, with the pre-briefing and debriefing.
No clinical knowledge needed. Monash says the MMI has no right or wrong answers. It asks for your thoughts and views on real-world scenarios.
What the stations assess
Monash lists seven qualities its stations focus on.
- Advocacy
- Collaboration
- Critical thinking
- Empathy
- Ethical reasoning
- Motivation
- Resilience
Use them as your checklist. Treat these as the scoring lens for every answer you practice.
How you get an interview
Monash invites a set number of applicants in rounds.
Who can apply
- School leavers only. You must have finished Year 12 (or equivalent) no more than two years before the course starts. You must not have started other tertiary study, including Certificate IV and above.
- ATAR and UCAT ANZ. The minimum ATAR is 90, and every domestic applicant must sit the UCAT ANZ. For 2027 entry, that means the 2026 UCAT ANZ.
- Apply through VTAC. Timely applications for 2027 entry closed at 5pm on Monday 28 September 2026 (Melbourne time).
- Keep Monash in your preferences. You must have a Monash Medicine preference on VTAC at that close and keep one there from then on. If you remove it later, you cannot add it back.
How each round ranks you
- December round: UCAT ANZ total score only, so Monash can finish selection within a tight time frame. ATARs are added once they come out after the MMI.
- January rounds: An equal mix of ATAR aggregate (with adjustment factors such as equity schemes) and UCAT ANZ total.
- Missed December? You are still considered for January as long as Monash Medicine stays in your VTAC preferences.
December cut-offs for 2027 entry
- Dean's Rural List: UCAT ANZ cut-off 2120 (70th percentile), 193 interview offers.
- Victorian-based applicants: For those not on the Dean's Rural List, UCAT ANZ cut-off 2390 (93rd percentile), 189 interview offers.
Cut-offs move. Monash says cut-offs change each year with the number of interview places and the spread of UCAT ANZ scores.
How offers are decided
Three equal parts
Selection has three parts with equal weight.
- ATAR aggregate. This includes adjustment factors such as equity schemes. Monash uses your aggregate score, not your ATAR rank, so two students with the same ATAR can rank differently.
- UCAT ANZ total. The situational judgement score is used only to separate applicants with the same UCAT ANZ total.
- MMI performance. Applicants interviewed in December are not judged differently. Once ATARs are out, all three scores are combined for everyone before offers are made.
Who gets an offer
- Attend and keep your preference. Only applicants who attend an interview and keep a Monash Medicine preference on VTAC stay in the final ranked list.
- Extracurriculars are not scored. That includes volunteering, though Monash notes it can give you insight that helps in the interview.
- Offer timing. January Round 1 offers come through VTAC in mid-January 2027. A smaller number of extra offers follow in late January 2027.
- About 234 places. Monash says there are about 234 domestic places, and at least 27% of them are reserved for Dean's Rural List applicants.
Interview dates for 2027 entry

Indigenous, international and graduate entry
Indigenous Entry Scheme
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants are exempt from competitive ranking. Instead of the UCAT ANZ and the MMI, they have a panel interview with an all-Indigenous panel of academics, student engagement staff and a community member.
International applicants
- ISAT, not UCAT ANZ. International applicants sit the ISAT instead. Year 12 results, ISAT and MMI are weighted equally.
- Four stations. Their MMI has four stations rather than six.
- Main round: For 2027 entry, interviews were on Zoom on 21 and 22 July 2026.
- Finishing school in Australia or NZ? International students completing an Australian Year 12, the IB in Australia or New Zealand, or New Zealand's NCEA interview on 26 November 2026 (subject to change).
Graduate entry
This is a separate route for graduates of listed Monash degrees, such as the Bachelor of Biomedical Science, with a Weighted Average Mark of at least 70.
It needs no GAMSAT and also uses a six-station MMI. If you interviewed for direct entry before, you can still interview for graduate entry.
How to prepare
You get one shot at the Monash MMI, so treat it that way.
- Practice on a laptop, timed. Answer out loud with a 2-minute read and an 8-minute answer, until the timing feels normal. Monash itself encourages applicants to practice presenting on Zoom.
- Eight minutes is long. Plan to give a clear first answer in two or three minutes, then be ready to go deeper if the interviewer asks follow-up questions.
- Know why medicine now. Know why you want medicine straight from school, and have real examples of working in a team, sticking up for someone and coming back from a setback.
- No medical facts needed. Monash says the MMI expects no clinical knowledge. Clear, honest thinking about people matters more.
Check against the seven qualities. Did you show empathy for the people in the scenario, weigh more than one view, and say what you would actually do?
Practice questions
Questions in the style of a MMI (online) station, written for applicants to Monash University. They are practice questions, not the school's own. Open one for what a strong answer does.
You're applying for medicine straight from school. What makes you confident that medicine is right for you now, rather than exploring other fields at university first?
A strong answer uses one or two specific experiences to show what you learned about the job, not just why it appeals to you.
You and another applicant have five minutes to assemble a puzzle. You are blindfolded, and your partner is not allowed to speak. How will you set up a way to communicate, and what challenges do you expect?
A strong answer agrees on a simple signal system first, checks understanding often, and stays calm when it breaks down.
During a first-year anatomy practical exam, you see a close friend looking at notes hidden in their sleeve. You know they have serious family problems and need to pass to keep their scholarship. What do you do?
A strong answer separates sympathy for your friend from the duty to act, talks to the friend first, and explains why honesty in medicine matters.
Roleplay: your friend tore a knee ligament playing netball. The public waiting list for surgery could be over a year, or they could pay to have it done privately in a few weeks, using most of their savings. Help them decide.
A strong answer asks what matters most to your friend, lays out both options fairly, and leaves the choice with them.
You are a junior medical student in a busy emergency department. A patient who has waited for hours looks increasingly pale and distressed, and all the nurses are busy with a major trauma. What do you do?
A strong answer speaks up for the patient by alerting a staff member quickly, stays within a student's role, and reassures the patient.
Your local GP clinic only has enough flu vaccines this week for about half of the patients booked in. How would you decide who gets vaccinated now, and what criteria would you use?
A strong answer names clear, fair criteria such as medical risk, explains the reasoning, and plans how to tell the patients who must wait.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Monash medicine interview online?
Yes. Monash runs its direct-entry MMI online via Zoom only. Invited applicants book their own time slot through an online system.
How many stations are in the Monash MMI?
Six stations for domestic direct-entry applicants. Each has 2 minutes of reading and 8 minutes of interview, and the circuit takes 70 to 80 minutes with briefings. International applicants have four stations.
Does the Monash interview count more than the UCAT?
No. The MMI, the UCAT ANZ total score and the ATAR aggregate each count equally toward the final ranking. The UCAT matters more for getting an interview, since December invites rank on UCAT ANZ alone.
When are Monash medicine interviews for 2027 entry?
2 and 3 December 2026 for the Dean's Rural List, 8 and 9 December 2026 for Victorian-based applicants, then 5 and 6 January 2027 and 18 and 19 January 2027. Monash says the dates are subject to change.
Can I resit the Monash MMI if I reapply?
No. You can attend the Monash direct-entry MMI only once. If you reapply after interviewing, Monash uses the results from your previous interview.
