Notre Dame Medicine Interview (MMI): Format, Casper and Dates

What happens at Notre Dame's medicine interview, how you get one, and how it decides your offer.

Notre Dame interviews GEMSAS applicants with an online Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) that you record on your own (asynchronous). Invitations rank GAMSAT, GPA, Casper and bonus points 30:30:30:10. Offers are 50% that score and 50% the interview. Interview offers come in September 2026. The number of stations is not published.

What happens on the day

There is no interview day on campus. Notre Dame's MMI is online and recorded, so you answer on camera in your own time.

  • Recorded, not live. GEMSAS describes the MMI as a recorded, asynchronous online interview for both Fremantle and Sydney.
  • Stations not published. Notre Dame does not say how many stations there are, how long you get to read, or how long you get to answer.
  • Adjustments. If you need adjustments for the MMI, contact the Access and Inclusion team early. Supporting documents are due once you have an interview offer.
  • Watch your email. Interview invitations go to the email address in your application. Changes to the process are posted on Notre Dame's website.

Practice one-take answers. In a recorded MMI there is no interviewer to nod or prompt you. Practice speaking to a camera for the full time, with no notes.

How you get an interview

General applicants apply through GEMSAS and are ranked on four parts. GEMSAS says nothing outside the published criteria is considered.

What you need

  • A degree. A bachelor degree of at least 3 years full-time, finished within the last 10 years or in its final year when you apply.
  • GAMSAT. An average of at least 52 across the three sections, with at least 50 in each section.
  • GPA. A weighted GPA of at least 5.2. Your final year counts three times, the year before twice, and the year before that once.
  • Casper. Required. Without a score you are not considered. The 2026 test dates were 12 April, 5 May, 14 May and 11 June, the last date accepted for domestic applicants.

How the ranking works

  • 30:30:30:10. GAMSAT, GPA, Casper and bonus points are standardized and weighted 30, 30, 30 and 10.
  • Bonus points. For a rural background or a completed research Masters or Doctorate. Fremantle and Broome applicants can also get a bonus for 10 or more years of Western Australian residency as at 29 May 2026. Sydney has no residency bonus.
  • No personal statement. The general GEMSAS route is assessed only on GAMSAT, GPA, Casper, bonus points and the interview, so there is no personal statement or portfolio. GEMSAS says work experience and extracurricular achievements are not considered. Only the Indigenous Entry Pathway asks for a personal statement and CV.
  • Recent averages. For the 2026 intake, applicants offered an interview averaged a GPA of 6.60 and GAMSAT of 65.50 at Fremantle and Broome, and 6.74 and 68.23 at Sydney. These averages leave out applicants considered on rurality or a facilitated interview pathway.

How offers are decided

After interviews, Notre Dame ranks everyone again with the interview as half of the score.

  • Interview: 50%. Your MMI score.
  • Everything else: 50%. Your GAMSAT, GPA, Casper and bonus points.
  • Order of offers. CSP places are offered first, then BMP. Sydney then offers domestic full-fee places.
  • Timing. GEMSAS releases place offers at the end of October or early November 2026. Final-year students must finish their degree by 23 December 2026.
  • No deferral. Offers cannot be deferred. The course starts on 18 January 2027 with a compulsory in-person orientation.

The interview can move you a long way. It is half of the final rank, so a strong MMI can make up for a lower GAMSAT or GPA.

Fremantle, Sydney, other routes and dates

GEMSAS publishes one entry for Fremantle and Broome and another for Sydney. The interview and ranking rules are the same in both. Places, bonus points, fee types and clinical schools differ.

Where Fremantle and Sydney differ

  • Fremantle and Broome. 80 CSP places (60 Fremantle, 20 Broome), 32 BMP at Fremantle and up to 15 international places at Fremantle. No domestic full-fee places are listed. A Western Australian residency bonus applies. Years 3 and 4 at Fremantle are placed around Perth, with a Rural Clinical School option.
  • Sydney. 40 CSP and 17 BMP places, up to 57 domestic full-fee places and up to 35 international. Requests to add or remove the full-fee option closed at 4pm AEST on 2 October 2026. Years 3 and 4 run through seven clinical schools in Sydney, Melbourne, rural NSW and Victoria, allocated by ballot.
  • Broome years. Students at the Kimberley Centre for Remote Medical Training (KCRMT) spend years 1 and 2 in Broome and years 3 and 4 in rural Western Australia.
  • Pick carefully. Campus transfers are granted only in exceptional circumstances, so only preference a campus you can commit to.

Other routes

  • Indigenous Entry Pathway. Apply direct to Notre Dame (Fremantle, Sydney or Broome) with proof of Aboriginality, a degree with a GPA of 5.0 (lower GPAs are considered case by case), a personal statement and a CV. This is the only Notre Dame medicine route that asks for a personal statement and CV. The 2026 rounds close on 31 May, 30 June, 31 August and 31 October, and interviews start from June.
  • Kimberley and Pilbara residents. Priority for Broome. Apply direct with a GPA of 5.0 and 5 consecutive or 10 total years of residency. Applications closed 31 July 2026, and interviews are held in September.
  • Rural places. At least 28.5% of CSP places must go to applicants from a rural background.
  • Notre Dame graduates. Priority Entry reserves places for Notre Dame Biomedical Science graduates with a GPA of 6.0, GAMSAT of 55 and a Casper score no lower than 1 standard deviation below the mean. Facilitated Interview Pathways can give other Notre Dame graduates an interview. Fremantle lists its Pre-Medicine Certificate, and Sydney lists ACU Bachelor of Biomedical Science graduates.

Dates for 2027 entry

  • 29 May 2026. GEMSAS applications closed at 5pm AEST.
  • 11 June 2026. Last Casper date accepted for domestic applicants.
  • September 2026. Interview offers by email.
  • Late October to early November 2026. Place offers through GEMSAS.
  • 18 January 2027. The course starts with compulsory orientation.

How to prepare

  • Know what Notre Dame values. Notre Dame says its course aims to train doctors with the values of compassion, respect and service, and that it values passion, motivation and purpose. Ethics is taught as its own unit in year 2.
  • Think about rural and remote care. Broome is one of the most remote full medical programs in the world, and it aims to build a workforce for the Kimberley and Pilbara.
  • Rehearse on camera. Record yourself answering, then watch it back. Check that you look at the camera, speak clearly and finish before time runs out.
  • Have a simple structure. For ethics questions, say what the problem is, who is affected, the options, and what you would do and why.

Casper counts as much as GAMSAT. It is 30% of the interview ranking, so prepare for it as seriously as the MMI.

Practice questions

Questions in the style of a MMI (online, recorded) station, written for applicants to The University of Notre Dame Australia (Doctor of Medicine). They are practice questions, not the school's own. Open one for what a strong answer does.

You've already completed a first degree. What happened during your undergraduate studies that made you decide to sit the GAMSAT and move into medicine?

Tell one specific turning point, link it to what you learned in your degree, and show the decision was thought through.

You're a medical student observing a consultation where a patient with early-stage dementia agrees to a minor elective procedure. The next day, her husband calls and demands it be canceled, saying she isn't competent to decide. How should the team respond?

Separate capacity from diagnosis, respect the patient's voice, and explain how the team would check capacity and involve the husband fairly.

You are working in a regional hospital and discharging an Aboriginal patient who needs ongoing chronic disease management. You could refer them to a mainstream clinic or an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service. How would you discuss these options?

Put the patient's choice at the center, explain both options in plain words, and ask what matters to them about culture, trust and travel.

You are a doctor working fly-in fly-out at a remote clinic. A respected Elder tells you, a little angrily, that doctors 'always leave just when we finally get to know them.' How would you respond?

Acknowledge her frustration without being defensive, then offer something practical such as good handovers and building links with local health workers.

You are a first-year medical student on a rural placement. At the local pub on Saturday night, you see your supervising doctor drinking heavily. They are the only doctor on call at the local hospital tomorrow morning. What do you do?

Put patient safety first, think about how to raise it respectfully with the doctor, and know who you would escalate to if needed.

Closing the Gap draws attention to the differences in health outcomes between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Australians. How has your awareness of this shaped your motivation for medicine?

Be honest and specific about what you have seen or learned, and describe a realistic role you could play as a doctor.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Notre Dame medicine interview online?

Yes. Notre Dame uses an online MMI, and GEMSAS describes it as recorded and asynchronous, so you record your answers rather than speak to a live interviewer.

How many stations are in the Notre Dame MMI?

Notre Dame does not publish the number of stations or how long each one lasts.

How much does the interview count at Notre Dame?

Half of your offer rank. The other half is your GAMSAT, GPA, Casper and bonus points, which are also what get you the interview (weighted 30:30:30:10).

Is the Notre Dame interview different for Fremantle and Sydney?

The format and weightings are the same. The campuses differ in place numbers, Sydney's domestic full-fee places, clinical schools, and a Western Australian residency bonus that applies only to Fremantle and Broome.

Do I need Casper for Notre Dame medicine?

Yes. Applicants without a Casper score are not considered. For 2027 entry the last accepted test date for domestic applicants was 11 June 2026.
