Griffith Medicine Interview (GUMSAA): Format, Dates and Pathways
What happens at Griffith's medicine interview, how you get one, and how it decides your offer.
Griffith interviews graduate-entry applicants with GUMSAA, an online multi-station assessment you record on the SAMMI platform at a time you choose between 21 and 25 September 2026. Griffith's SAMMI guide lists 6 recorded questions. Allow about an hour. The interview is 50% of the offer rank. School leavers in the Bachelor of Medical Science pathway skip it and move into the MD with a GPA of 5.5.
Key facts (2027 entry)
- Format
- GUMSAA (Griffith University Multi-Station Admissions Assessment): scenario-based questions, recorded on the SAMMI (Scalable Automated Multiple Mini Interviews) system.
- Stations and timing
- 6 questions, with a 60-second break between them. The guide gives up to 5 minutes a question in one place and 4 minutes a station in another. About 1 hour in one sitting, including sound checks and up to 15 minutes to upload.
- Online or in person
- Online. You record your answers at a time you pick within the window.
- When (2027 entry)
- 9am Monday 21 September to 5pm Friday 25 September 2026 (AEST). Accept your interview offer by 9am Friday 4 September 2026.
- Who is interviewed
- Graduate applicants ranked 50:50 on unweighted GPA and overall GAMSAT. About 200 candidates for about 110 to 120 places.
- How the interview counts
- 50% of the offer rank. The other 50% is your interview selection rank (GPA and GAMSAT).
- Places (2027)
- 148 CSP and 60 BMP domestic places, about 80 of them for Bachelor of Medical Science graduates, plus up to 35 international.
- Other routes
- Provisional entry for school leavers (Bachelor of Medical Science at Griffith or UniSC), the Rural Priority Access Scheme (GURPAS), and First Peoples pathways.
What happens on the day
GUMSAA is done at home on a computer. You get a scenario, then answer one or more questions about it on camera.
The format
- Recorded on SAMMI. Griffith emails your SAMMI link, username and password on the morning of Monday 21 September 2026. You can practice recording before the real interview.
- You pick the time. Any time between 9am Monday 21 September and 5pm Friday 25 September 2026 (AEST). The window will not be reopened.
- About 1 hour. Do it in one sitting. Uploading your answers can take up to 15 minutes.
- 6 questions. Griffith's SAMMI guide for 2026-27 lists 6 questions. You get 25 seconds before the first, and a 60-second break after each. It says up to 5 minutes a question on page 1 and 4 minutes a station on page 11, so plan for the shorter time.
- No questions in advance. Each question plays as a short video read by someone from Griffith, then shows as text with a timer. Questions are not given in advance.
The rules
- Photo ID. Email a scanned photo ID and your signed Letter of Confidentiality by 9am Friday 4 September 2026. Your ID is checked against your video.
- Mirror behind you. Set up a mirror so assessors can see your screen. Blurred or virtual backgrounds are not allowed.
- No notes, no help. No notes, phones, headphones or AI. Keep your hands visible and be alone in the room.
- Dress. A collared shirt or blouse or a similar professional top. Hoodies, sportswear and caps are not appropriate.
- Equipment. A laptop or desktop computer, not a tablet, phone or 2-in-1. Use Chrome, Firefox, Opera or Edge, not Safari, with an upload speed of at least 10 Mbps.
Do it early in the window. Griffith itself advises not leaving it to the last day, and having a backup computer or internet connection ready.
How you get an interview
Graduate applicants apply through GEMSAS and are ranked on GPA and GAMSAT only. School leavers in the provisional pathway do not sit GUMSAA.
- Minimums. A GPA of at least 5.0, and a GAMSAT of at least 50 overall and in each section.
- 50:50 ranking. Your unweighted GPA (as a percentage) and your overall GAMSAT are combined equally. A strong GAMSAT can make up for a lower GPA, and the reverse.
- Recent medians. Griffith's published median scores for the 2026 intake were a GPA of 6.729 and a GAMSAT of 69.
- Unweighted GPA. Griffith uses your last three years of full-time study, with no extra weight on the final year.
- No personal statement. Griffith's graduate entry steps are GAMSAT, the GEMSAS application and the interview. No personal statement or portfolio is listed.
How offers are decided
After GUMSAA, Griffith ranks interviewees again with the interview as half of the score.
- Interview: 50%. Your overall GUMSAA score, as a percentage.
- Selection rank: 50%. The same GPA and GAMSAT rank used for interview invitations.
- What is assessed. Communication, an empathetic and ethical approach, reflection, problem-solving, teamwork and decision-making.
- Timing. The main offer round is by early November 2026, with top-up rounds if needed. Final-year students must finish their degree by 23 December 2026.
- Campus. You rank the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast Health Institute when you apply. Preferences are considered but not guaranteed.
School leaver, rural and other routes
Griffith has a school leaver route with no GAMSAT or GUMSAA, plus rural and First Peoples routes.
Provisional entry for school leavers
- The degree. A 2-year Bachelor of Medical Science at the Gold Coast or Brisbane South (Nathan), with 30 places at each. Finish with a GPA of 5.5 or higher and you are guaranteed a place in the MD.
- ATAR first. For 2026 entry the lowest adjusted ATAR offered was 99.90 at the Gold Coast and 99.95 at Nathan. Between 2023 and 2025 it ranged from 99.80 to 99.90.
- UCAT ANZ is optional. Its Total Score separates applicants on the same ATAR band. For 2026 entry, Griffith used a minimum UCAT ANZ Total Score of 2240 at the Gold Coast. At Nathan, everyone in the 99.95 band got an offer. Without a UCAT you are ranked at the bottom of your band.
- No interview listed. Griffith and QTAC list no interview for this degree, and moving into the MD needs no GUMSAA.
- Who can apply. Current Year 12 students or those who finished in the past year, with no diploma-level or higher study. Apply through QTAC by 30 December 2026, ideally by 7 December for the 14 January 2027 offer round.
- Sunshine Coast option. UniSC's 3-year Bachelor of Medical Science (Griffith MD Provisional Entry for School-Leavers, QTAC 013231) has 20 places. A GPA of 5.50 keeps your place in Griffith's MD at Sunshine Coast University Hospital.
Rural and First Peoples routes
- GURPAS. Commonwealth Supported Places in the MD are set aside for applicants who have lived in a rural area (MM 2 to MM 7) for 5 years in a row or 10 years in total. Griffith's rural scheme page uses the 2023 Modified Monash Model, but its Pathways to Medicine page says 2019, so check your address under both or ask Griffith. Say yes to the rural question in GEMSAS and provide proof of residence.
- Rural school leavers. No places are set aside in Griffith's Bachelor of Medical Science, but QTAC-assessed rural applicants get a 0.05 ATAR adjustment.
- Toowoomba. 10 non-bonded CSP places at the Rural Clinical School, with subsidized housing. Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast offer holders can be considered in early November 2026.
- First Peoples. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander graduates with a GPA of 5.0 need no GAMSAT or GUMSAA. They have a panel interview instead. Documents not sent through GEMSAS were due by 7 August 2026.
Dates for 2027 entry
- 29 May 2026. GEMSAS applications closed at 5pm AEST.
- 4 September 2026. Accept your GUMSAA invitation and send ID by 9am.
- 21 to 25 September 2026. GUMSAA interview window.
- Early November 2026. Main MD offer round and Toowoomba invitations.
- 30 December 2026. QTAC closes for the Bachelor of Medical Science. Offers come on 14 January 2027.
How to prepare
- Know Griffith's focus. Griffith says its MD has a strong focus on general practice, primary care and rural and remote health. Expect scenarios where those settings make sense.
- Practice on camera, no notes. Record yourself answering a scenario, then watch it back. Check that you look at the camera and finish your point clearly.
- Use a simple structure. Say what the issue is, who is affected, the options, and what you would do and why.
- Do a full tech rehearsal. Set up the mirror, the lighting and a quiet room days before, so nothing surprises you on the day.
Reflect, do not just describe. Griffith lists a reflective manner as a quality it rates. Say what you learned and what you would do differently.
Practice questions
Questions in the style of a Multi-station (online, recorded) station, written for applicants to Griffith University (Doctor of Medicine). They are practice questions, not the school's own. Open one for what a strong answer does.
You are a medical student on a rural placement. A farmer comes in with a severe hand injury but refuses to be transferred to the regional hospital three hours away, because he can't leave his livestock during a drought. The clinic can't do the surgery he needs. How do you approach this?
Respect his autonomy while making sure he understands the risks, and look for practical help with the livestock so he can get care.
Telehealth has expanded access to care in remote areas, but it has real limits. What do you see as the main practical and social barriers to relying on telehealth in rural communities?
Name a few concrete barriers, such as internet access, physical exams and trust, and suggest how they could be reduced.
Some clinics have stopped bulk billing, so patients now pay an out-of-pocket fee for a standard GP visit. How do you think this affects the wider healthcare system in Australia?
Follow the chain of effects, such as delayed care and busier emergency departments, and think about who is hit hardest.
Australia has a shortage of doctors in rural and remote areas. How does a program like the Bonded Medical Program try to address this, and what else does it take for a doctor to stay in a remote community?
Show you understand what the program asks of doctors, then add realistic ideas about support, training and belonging.
A friend who is also applying to medicine tells you they exaggerated their rural background to get into a rural entry pathway. They say it doesn't matter because they plan to work rurally anyway. How do you respond?
Be clear that honesty matters and why, consider who is harmed, and explain how you would talk to your friend first.
A supply delay means your local GP clinic only has enough flu vaccines this week for about half the patients booked in. How would you decide who gets vaccinated this week?
Set out fair criteria based on risk, explain them openly to patients, and say how you would look after those who have to wait.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Griffith medicine interview online?
Yes. GUMSAA is recorded online on the SAMMI system, at a time you choose between 9am Monday 21 September and 5pm Friday 25 September 2026 (AEST).
How many stations are in Griffith's GUMSAA?
Griffith's SAMMI guide for 2026-27 lists 6 questions, with a 60-second break between them. It gives up to 5 minutes a question in one place and 4 minutes a station in another. Allow about 1 hour in one sitting, including checks and uploading.
Do school leavers have an interview for Griffith Medicine?
Griffith and QTAC list no interview for the Bachelor of Medical Science. Graduates of that degree with a GPA of 5.5 or higher are guaranteed an MD place without GAMSAT or GUMSAA.
Do I need the UCAT ANZ for Griffith?
It is optional for the Bachelor of Medical Science, but it separates applicants with the same ATAR, and applicants without a score are ranked lower in their band. Griffith strongly recommends sitting it.
How much does the interview count at Griffith?
Half of the offer rank. The other half is the interview selection rank, which is 50:50 unweighted GPA and overall GAMSAT.
