Deakin Medicine Interview (MMI): Format, Dates and Rural Entry
What happens at Deakin's medicine interview, how you get one, and how it decides your offer.

What happens on the day
Deakin uses a Multiple Mini Interview (MMI), held online in September 2026. You move through a set of short stations, one after another.
- Up to 6 stations. The stations run back to back, each with a new task.
- 5 minutes each. That is short, so get to your main point quickly.
- Online. Interviews are held online. Deakin and GEMSAS do not publish the platform in their admissions summaries, so watch your invitation for details.
- Pass mark. You need at least 50% overall at the MMI. Scoring less than 2 on any station triggers a review.
What the stations assess
GEMSAS and Deakin list ten qualities the stations may assess.
- People skills. Communication skills, teamwork and professionalism.
- Why medicine. Motivation for a career in medicine and self-directed learning.
- Deakin's mission. Commitment to rural and regional practice and commitment to social justice.
- Health systems. Evidence-based practice, effective use of resources and health promotion.
Unusual qualities. Evidence-based practice, use of resources and health promotion are on Deakin's list, so be ready for questions about public health and fair use of limited care.
How you get an interview
You apply through GEMSAS. Deakin interviews at most 220 applicants. General Stream applicants are picked on their academic score, and Rural Training Stream applicants also on a written application.
- GPA 5.0 or higher. A completed bachelor degree with a weighted GPA of at least 5.0, or the final year of one that you finish by 23 December 2026. For the General Stream and RTS Tiers 2 and 3, the degree must be completed within 10 years of the date you would start the MD.
- GAMSAT 50. At least 50 overall and at least 50 in each of the three sections.
- Ranking. General Stream applicants are ranked on GPA, GAMSAT and adjustments, equally weighted.
Adjustments (bonuses)
Adjustments add a percentage to your combined GPA and GAMSAT score. You only get one location-based adjustment (Geelong or rurality).
- Prior clinical experience: 4%. One year full-time (or 1,872 hours) as an AHPRA registered health professional, or in speech pathology or dietetics.
- Work experience: 2%. Two years full-time (or 3,744 hours over four years) of other paid work. It cannot be combined with the clinical adjustment.
- Deakin study: 4%. A Deakin degree, completed or being finished in the year you apply, with at least two thirds of it done at Deakin.
- Geelong: 4%. At least 5 years in a row or 10 years in total living in Geelong (MM1).
- Rurality: 4% or 8%. 4% for MM2 and 8% for MM3 to MM7, with the same 5 years in a row or 10 years in total.
- Financial disadvantage: 2%. At least 12 months on an approved benefit during your degree.
How offers are decided
After the MMI, General Stream applicants are ranked on a final score split in half.
- Interview: 50%. Your MMI score.
- Academics: 50%. GPA, GAMSAT and adjustments, equally weighted.
- Rural places. Deakin's course page says at least 50% of all course places (Rural Training Stream plus General Stream) go to applicants who meet rural background criteria. GEMSAS's Deakin page puts it differently: at least 25% of domestic places go to rural background applicants on top of the 30 Rural Training Stream places, and Deakin aims for 50% of its cohort to be rural.
- Timing. GEMSAS main offers come out at the end of October or early November 2026. Offer conditions are due by close of business on 23 December 2026.
- Conditions. If your overall GPA drops by more than 0.4 or you miss a condition, the offer is withdrawn. Deferrals are not allowed.
Rural and Indigenous routes, and dates for 2027 entry
Deakin's Doctor of Medicine has a focus on rural and regional medicine and Indigenous health. It runs two special entry routes.
Rural Training Stream (RTS)
Around 30 domestic places each year are held for the Rural Training Stream. You apply through GEMSAS with Deakin as your first preference.
- Three tiers. Tier 1 is Deakin's rural footprint in western Victoria, Tier 2 is MM2 to MM7 rural Victoria and Tier 3 is MM2 to MM7 elsewhere in rural Australia. You need 10 years in total or 5 years in a row living there.
- No GAMSAT for Tier 1. Tier 1 applicants are assessed on GPA, the written application and the MMI. Tiers 2 and 3 also need GAMSAT 50.
- Written application. Three sections of up to 1,000 characters each: your rural community connection, your interest in rural medicine and your capability for postgraduate study.
- How it counts. The application is 50% of the interview ranking. For offers it is 25%, with academics 25% and the MMI 50%.
- Where you study. Years 1 and 2 at Warrnambool or East Grampians Health Service in Ararat, then Ballarat-Grampians, Warrnambool-South West or Rural Communities in Years 3 and 4. You commit in writing to all four years at a rural site.
- No fallback. If you decline an RTS offer, you are not considered for the General Stream.
Indigenous Entry Stream (IES)
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants can apply directly to the School of Medicine, with any undergraduate or postgraduate degree and no GAMSAT. Applications close at 5pm on Friday 31 July 2026.
- How you are ranked. GPA (at least 5.0), your IES application form and an interview, where you need at least 50%.
- Documents. You email the form with recognition as an Indigenous Australian and confirmation of Aboriginality from your community. If you get a place, you need a police check, immunization history and a Working with Children Check at enrollment.
- Through GEMSAS instead. You can also apply through GEMSAS. Confirmation of Aboriginality or Torres Strait Islander descent was due by 30 June 2026.
Key dates
- 1 to 29 May 2026. GEMSAS applications open and close (5pm AEST).
- 31 July 2026. Indigenous Entry Stream applications close at 5pm.
- Early September 2026. GEMSAS interview offers.
- September 2026. Online MMIs.
- End of October or early November 2026. GEMSAS main offers.
How to prepare
- Practice 5-minute answers. Time yourself. Give your view in the first minute, then your reasons and one example.
- Know rural health. Commitment to rural and regional practice is on Deakin's list. Think about what doctors in western Victoria's small towns deal with, like distance, staffing and long travel to specialists.
- Learn the basics of public health. Read about health promotion campaigns and how limited resources like vaccines or hospital beds get shared fairly.
- Use your degree. Graduate applicants can draw on research, work and study. Have one example of learning on your own and one of using evidence.
- Test your setup. Check your camera, sound and internet in the room you will use, well before the day.
Each station is a fresh start. With only 5 minutes per station, let a weak one go and focus on the next.
Practice questions
Questions in the style of a MMI (online) station, written for applicants to Deakin University (Doctor of Medicine). They are practice questions, not the school's own. Open one for what a strong answer does.
You've already completed a first degree. What happened during your undergraduate studies that made you decide to sit the GAMSAT and move into medicine?
Tell one specific turning point, then show how your degree has prepared you for medicine.
Why do you think many doctors are reluctant to practice in rural and remote areas, and what changes could encourage them to build careers outside the major cities?
Name real barriers like isolation, training access and family, then suggest practical fixes beyond money.
A supply delay means your local GP clinic only has enough flu vaccines this week for about half of the patients booked in. How would you decide who gets vaccinated this week?
Use clear criteria such as risk of serious illness, explain them openly to patients and plan for the rest.
Australia has some of the highest skin cancer rates in the world. Despite decades of campaigns like Slip, Slop, Slap, many young people still take risks in the sun. Why does public health messaging sometimes fail, and what could make it work better?
Explain why young people ignore long-term risks and suggest a message that fits how they actually behave.
You are a first-year medical student on a rural placement. At the local pub on Saturday night, you see your supervising doctor drinking heavily. They are the only doctor on call tomorrow morning. What do you do?
Put patient safety first, respond with care for the doctor, and say who you would raise it with if needed.
You and another applicant have five minutes to assemble a puzzle. You are blindfolded, and your partner is not allowed to speak. How will you set up a way to communicate?
Agree on a simple system early, check it works, and talk about how you would adjust when it breaks down.
