Western Sydney Medicine Interview (MMI): Format, Dates and Entry

What happens at Western Sydney's medicine interview, how you get one, and how it decides your offer.

Western Sydney interviews general and rural (REAS) applicants with a Multi-Mini-Station Interview (MMI) on Zoom in late November 2026. Each question is at its own station with a new interviewer and about eight minutes per answer. Offers are 75% interview and 25% UCAT ANZ, once you meet the academic threshold: an ATAR of 95.5 (93.5 for Greater Western Sydney, 91.5 for REAS) or an equivalent GPA.

What happens on the day

Western Sydney's interview is a Multi-Mini-Station Interview (MMI) held on Zoom. The school says it uses the MMI to assess the non-cognitive qualities that matter to patients and communities.

  • One question per station. Each question is asked by a separate interviewer at a separate station, so every station is a fresh start.
  • About eight minutes each. You have roughly eight minutes to answer before you move to the next station.
  • Number of stations not published. Western Sydney does not say how many stations there are or how each one is scored.
  • Online. All domestic general and REAS applicants interview by video conference (Zoom). Invited applicants get the details directly.

Eight minutes is long. That is a long time to talk on one question. Practice structured answers that fill the time with depth, not repetition.

How you get an interview

Interview invitations are based on your UCAT ANZ. You apply through UAC with course code 725505 as a preference.

  • UCAT ANZ this year. You must sit the UCAT ANZ in the year you apply. Results from earlier sittings do not count, and you add your ANZ candidate number to your UAC application. For 2027 entry the test window was 1 July to 5 August 2026.
  • Not your overall score. The interview cut-off is not set by your overall UCAT ANZ score, and individual sections may be weighted. Western Sydney does not publish which sections or by how much.
  • Greater Western Sydney places. A share of interview places goes to applicants who have lived in a Greater Western Sydney postcode for at least five years in a row right before the course starts.
  • No late applications. UAC applications for 2027 closed at midnight AEST on 30 September 2026. Changes or documents sent after that are not considered.

How offers are decided

Only applicants who attend the MMI are considered. Offers then rank you on two things, once you meet the academic threshold.

  • Interview: 75%. Your MMI performance is three quarters of the final rank.
  • UCAT ANZ: 25%. Your UCAT ANZ performance makes up the rest.
  • ATAR threshold. 95.5 for most applicants, 93.5 for Greater Western Sydney applicants and 91.5 for REAS applicants. It is only checked for those who took part in the MMI.
  • University study. General applicants who have studied at university are assessed on their GPA or ATAR, whichever is higher, and REAS applicants on their GPA. For example, a completed bachelor degree needs a GPA of 5.5 (5.2 for Greater Western Sydney, 4.9 for REAS).
  • No feedback, no deferral. Individual feedback on outcomes is not given, and deferrals are not accepted for this course.

The interview decides most of it. At 75% of the rank, the MMI counts three times as much as your UCAT ANZ once you have interviewed.

Other routes and dates for 2027 entry

Western Sydney has three entry routes for domestic applicants, and all of them apply through UAC.

Rural Entry Admission Scheme (REAS)

At least 15 places are set aside for REAS students, who study the same course as everyone else. You must have lived in a remoteness area (ASGS-RA) of 2 to 5 for five years in a row or ten years in total since age five.

  • Community form. Upload a completed Community Member Confirmation form with your UAC application by 30 September 2026.
  • Same MMI. REAS applicants interview on Zoom in late November, and offers use the same 75% interview and 25% UCAT ANZ split.
  • One route only. Apply through REAS or the general route, not both. New Zealand citizens cannot use REAS.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants

This pathway uses a panel interview in early November, with the Dean, the Professor of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health, an academic and a community member. Questions cover your motivation, education and goals, and the school says the most important criterion is your passion to become a doctor.

  • Academic requirement. A completed NSW HSC or tertiary equivalent.
  • Bring documents. Your academic transcript, a resume and evidence of community involvement. Confirmation of Aboriginality or Torres Strait Islander identity is needed before the interview.

Rural clinical schools

Students can spend at least 12 months of Years 4 and 5 at the rural clinical schools in Bathurst or Lismore, with subsidized accommodation. If not enough students volunteer, the school allocates places.

Key dates

  • 8 April to 30 September 2026. UAC applications open and close.
  • End of October 2026. Interview invitations.
  • Late November 2026. MMIs on Zoom.
  • 8 January 2027. Offer Round 1.
  • 8 February 2027. Year 1 starts for domestic students at Campbelltown.

How to prepare

  • Know Western Sydney. Clinical placements run across Greater Western Sydney and rural New South Wales, including Aboriginal Medical Services. Think about who lives in those communities and what they need from doctors.
  • Practice on Zoom. Set up a quiet room, test your camera and sound, and rehearse speaking to a screen for eight minutes at a time.
  • Use a structure. With eight minutes, plan your answer in parts: your view, the reasons, the other side, then what you would do.
  • Reset between stations. Each question has a new interviewer at a new station. Treat every question as a clean slate.

School leaver maturity. Have two or three real stories ready from school, work or volunteering that show how you handle responsibility and people under pressure.

Practice questions

Questions in the style of a MMI (online) station, written for applicants to Western Sydney University (Bachelor of Clinical Science (Medicine)/Doctor of Medicine). They are practice questions, not the school's own. Open one for what a strong answer does.

You're applying straight from school through the UCAT ANZ pathway. What have you done to build the maturity to talk with vulnerable patients and handle hard situations?

Give one or two specific experiences, say what you learned about yourself, and be honest about what you still need to learn.

You are a junior medical student on placement in a busy public hospital emergency department. The waiting room is full, and you notice a patient who has been waiting for hours looking increasingly pale and distressed. What do you do?

Put the patient's safety first, stay within your role as a student, and say exactly who you would tell and how.

Some clinics have stopped bulk billing, so patients now pay an out-of-pocket fee for a standard GP visit. How do you think this affects the wider healthcare system in Australia?

Follow the knock-on effects, such as delayed care and more emergency visits, and think about who is hit hardest in lower-income areas.

Medical schools recruit students from rural backgrounds because they are more likely to work in the country later. Whether you grew up in a city or a small town, how do you plan to contribute to rural health?

Be realistic and specific, for example a rural placement or a skill rural towns need, rather than making big promises.

You are about to explain a complex treatment plan to an older patient whose first language is not English. Several family members have come with them. How would you approach this conversation?

Mention a professional interpreter, checking understanding in the patient's own words, and making sure the patient, not the family, makes the decision.

Roleplay: your co-worker Sam at a busy cafe has been arriving late and taking long breaks for two weeks, leaving you to handle the morning rush alone. Talk to Sam about it.

Open with curiosity rather than blame, ask if something is going on, and agree on a fair plan together.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Western Sydney medicine interview online?

Yes. All domestic general and REAS applicants do the MMI by video conference on Zoom in late November.

How many stations are in the Western Sydney MMI?

Western Sydney does not publish the number. It says each question is at a separate station with a different interviewer, and you have about eight minutes per answer.

Does the interview count more than the UCAT at Western Sydney?

Yes. Offers are based 75% on the interview and 25% on UCAT ANZ, as long as you meet the academic threshold. UCAT ANZ is what gets you the interview in the first place.

What ATAR do you need for Western Sydney Medicine?

95.5 for most applicants, 93.5 if you meet the Greater Western Sydney residence rules and 91.5 for the Rural Entry Admission Scheme. The threshold is checked only for applicants who sat the MMI.

When are Western Sydney medicine interviews for 2027 entry?

Invitations go out at the end of October 2026 and MMIs run in late November 2026. No other dates are offered. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander pathway interviews in early November.
