Adelaide Medicine Interview (MMI): Format, Dates and Weighting

What happens at Adelaide University's medicine interview, how you get one, and how it decides your offer.

Adelaide University interviews about 600 applicants with a Multiple Mini Interview on Zoom: at least 6 stations of 10 minutes each, with one interviewer per station. On the main pathway, interview invitations depend only on your UCAT ANZ. Offers are ranked on the interview (40%), academic results (40%) and UCAT ANZ (20%). For 2027 entry, interviews run from late November to December 2026.

What happens on the day

Adelaide University runs its medicine interview as a Multiple Mini Interview over Zoom. You get a booking confirmation and Zoom link within 24 hours of booking.

  • At least 6 stations. Each station lasts 10 minutes and is a scenario or a set of questions.
  • One interviewer per station. Interviewers are trained by the university and may be staff, academics, medical program alumni, health professionals or members of the community.
  • Private room, no notes. You must be somewhere private, not communicate with anyone else, and not use any notes, on paper or on a screen. Breaking these rules can cancel your interview and make you ineligible for an offer.
  • Adelaide time. Every slot is in Adelaide time. If you are late, even because of a time-zone mistake, your application does not go further.
  • One interview for several degrees. If you qualify for medicine, dental surgery and oral health, you sit a single interview that covers all of them.

What is assessed. Problem solving, communication, teamwork, empathy, integrity, preparedness for the program, cultural awareness and motivation to study medicine.

How you get an interview

You sit the UCAT ANZ, apply through SATAC with your UCAT ANZ ID, and the university ranks you on your UCAT ANZ result. Your school marks are not used for the invitation.

  • UCAT ANZ only. Sections 1 to 3 count equally. Section 4, the Situational Judgement Test, is only used to separate applicants in the lower ranks who have the same total on the other three sections.
  • About 600 invitations. At least 50% of the school leavers invited are from South Australia.
  • Academic minimum. Year 12 applicants need an adjusted ATAR-equivalent selection rank of 90.00 or higher, plus one of SACE Stage 2 Biology, Chemistry or Mathematical Methods (or equivalent).
  • No UCAT, no interview. If your UCAT ANZ is not high enough, your application stops there. Adelaide will not change your score for illness or other reasons.
  • Matching email. The email you used to register for the UCAT ANZ must match your SATAC application, or your application will not progress.

How offers are decided

After interviews, Adelaide ranks everyone on three scores. Offers are made through SATAC from January 2027.

  • Interview: 40%. Your MMI result.
  • Academic results: 40%. Your academic score.
  • UCAT ANZ: 20%. Your UCAT ANZ result.
  • Bonded or non-bonded. You can list a standard place (ABP171), a Bonded Medical Program place (ABP271), or both, which uses two of your six SATAC preferences. Bonded places come with a commitment to work in regional, rural or remote areas after graduating.
  • No feedback. The university does not release interview feedback or your overall ranking.

Pathways and dates for 2027 entry

Adelaide University names the University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia as its antecedent institutions. Its 6-year medicine program is a 3-year Bachelor of Medical Studies followed by direct entry into the Doctor of Medicine.

Rural, Indigenous and other pathways

  • Rural Background pathway. About 41 places. You must have lived in an MM 2 to 7 area for at least 5 years in a row or 10 years in total, sit the UCAT ANZ and submit a Rural Entry Pathway Statutory Declaration. Interview places are filled in order of where you did Year 12, starting with rural South Australian schools, and then by UCAT ANZ score.
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander pathway. No UCAT ANZ needed, and every eligible applicant is interviewed. The interview is about 20 minutes with a panel of 3 to 4 people, mostly Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, and starts with an informal yarn to put you at ease.
  • Northern Community Care Stream. For students who did their last three years of school in Adelaide's northern suburbs, with no prior tertiary record. Ranked on ATAR or IB plus interview, with no UCAT needed if you apply only for the stream's own codes (ABP292 and ABP293). If you did not already interview for ABP171 or ABP271, you may be invited (on ATAR or IB alone, from 20 January 2027) to its own interviews on 28 January 2027.
  • Higher Education pathway. At least 10 places for students whose only tertiary study is one to two years at Adelaide University or one of its antecedent institutions (the University of Adelaide or the University of South Australia), with a GPA of 5.0 or more.

2027 entry timeline

  • 1 July to 5 August 2026. UCAT ANZ testing ran.
  • 30 September 2026. SATAC applications for medicine closed. Late applications are not accepted.
  • 22 to 29 October 2026. Interview eligibility emails went out on 22 October and the booking system is open until 29 October. Slots are first come, first served.
  • Late November to December 2026. Interviews held.
  • From January 2027. SATAC releases offers, and more can follow until all places are filled.

Book fast, reschedule rarely. You can change your slot only while booking is open. After that, a reschedule needs a medical or compassionate reason, emailed with evidence within 24 hours of the original interview, and is allowed once.

How to prepare

  • Sound natural, not scripted. Adelaide warns that rehearsed replies can lower your score. Practice thinking out loud on new scenarios instead of memorizing answers.
  • Use the full 10 minutes. Ten minutes is a long time to spend on one scenario. Practice going deeper and following your reasoning through rather than giving a quick answer.
  • Know the rural side. Every Commonwealth supported student does at least four weeks of rural placement, and 30% of domestic students spend a full year training rurally. Be ready to talk about rural health in South Australia.
  • Set up Zoom like an exam. Test your camera, microphone and internet in a quiet, private room well before your slot.

Cultural awareness is scored. Adelaide lists cultural awareness among the interview criteria. Read about Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services and Closing the Gap, and think about what culturally safe care looks like in practice.

Practice questions

Questions in the style of a MMI (online, Zoom) station, written for applicants to Adelaide University. They are practice questions, not the school's own. Open one for what a strong answer does.

You're applying straight from school through the UCAT ANZ pathway. You haven't had the extra years of life experience a graduate applicant has, so what have you done to build the maturity to talk with vulnerable patients?

Use one real example, such as volunteering or caring for a family member, and say what it taught you about listening.

You're applying for medicine straight from school. What makes you confident that medicine is right for you now, rather than exploring other fields at university first?

Show you have tested your interest with real experiences and understand the hard parts of the job, not just the appeal.

You and a close friend are in the same first-year anatomy unit. During a practical exam, you notice your friend looking at notes hidden in their sleeve. You know they've been dealing with serious family problems and need to pass to keep their scholarship. What do you do?

Balance honesty and fairness to other students with compassion, and talk to your friend about the support options available.

Why do you think many doctors are reluctant to practice in rural and remote areas of Australia, and what changes could encourage them to build careers outside the major cities?

Cover both professional and personal reasons, then suggest specific fixes such as rural training and support for families.

Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services play a significant role in providing care across Australia. What do you think are the main benefits for an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander patient of attending a community-controlled clinic rather than a mainstream general practice?

Talk about trust, cultural safety and community control, and show respect for what these services already do well.

This is a roleplay. You are volunteering at a hospital information desk. A visitor comes up, very angry, shouting that their elderly father has been stuck in an ambulance outside the emergency department for three hours because there are no beds. Please speak with the visitor.

Stay calm, acknowledge their fear before explaining anything, and be honest about what you can and cannot do as a volunteer.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Adelaide medicine interview online?

Yes. All interviews are held online over Zoom, and there is no option to interview in person, by phone or on another platform.

How many stations are in the Adelaide MMI?

At least 6 stations, each lasting 10 minutes, with one interviewer per station. Adelaide reviews its interviews each year, so the content can change.

Does the interview count more than the UCAT at Adelaide?

Yes. The interview is 40% of your offer ranking, the same as your academic results, while UCAT ANZ is 20%. But on the main pathway, UCAT ANZ alone decides who gets an interview.

When are Adelaide medicine interviews for 2027 entry?

From late November to December 2026. Eligibility emails went out and booking opened on 22 October 2026, and booking closes on 29 October 2026. Northern Community Care Stream interviews are on 28 January 2027.

What ATAR do I need for Adelaide medicine?

Year 12 applicants need an adjusted ATAR-equivalent selection rank of at least 90.00. Meeting it only makes you eligible, since interview invitations depend on UCAT ANZ.
