Curtin Medicine Interview (MMI): Format, UCAT, ATAR and Dates
What happens at Curtin's medicine interview, how you get one, and how it decides your offer.
Curtin interviews with Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs), mostly face to face in Perth, with online interviews for interstate and overseas applicants. You are invited on ATAR, Casper and UCAT ANZ weighted 35:35:30. Offers then weigh ATAR, UCAT ANZ and the MMI 40:20:40, so the interview is 40% of your offer rank.

- Format
- Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs). Curtin does not publish the number of stations or how long each lasts.

What happens on the day
Curtin interviews with Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs), mostly in person at its Perth campus in Bentley.
- What it tests. Your communication skills, critical appraisal of information, ability to consider important issues, and personal attributes essential to the medical profession.
- Stations not published. Curtin does not publish how many stations there are or how long each one runs.
- Online for some. Limited online interviews are offered where needed, such as for interstate or overseas applicants. The process is the same as face to face.
- Fixed time slot. You are given a set date and time. Interviews cannot be moved to a date Curtin has not published.
- Attendance is mandatory. You must attend to stay eligible for an offer. If you do not attend, or do not tell Curtin in advance that you cannot, you lose your chance. Attending does not guarantee an offer.
Rural travel help. Curtin Medical School offers scholarships that help rural students with the UCAT ANZ fee and with travel to interviews in Perth.
How you get an interview
Curtin ranks applicants within each entry pathway and invites the top ranked to an MMI. Meeting the minimums does not guarantee an interview.
The ranking for interview
- ATAR or equivalent: 35. School leavers use their ATAR. Graduates use a notional ATAR worked out by Curtin, and Curtin course switchers use their course weighted average.
- Casper: 35. Sit it in the year you apply. School leavers and course switchers take the undergraduate Casper, graduates take the postgraduate version.
- UCAT ANZ: 30. Your total score out of 2700 from the cognitive subtests. Scores count only for the next year's admission.
Minimum requirements
- ATAR 95. For school leavers, including any rural or StepUp adjustments. Graduates need a notional ATAR of 92, and course switchers a course weighted average of 80.
- Chemistry. Chemistry ATAR with a scaled score of 50 or higher, or an accepted equivalent. Maths and Biology or Human Biology are desirable.
- Apply through TISC. All applicants except the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander pathway apply through TISC, with their UCAT ANZ ID.
Who is in which round. WA school leavers are first ranked on a Predicted ATAR from Year 11 for the December round. The mid-January round uses actual ATARs for WA applicants who still have Curtin as first preference on 28 December.
How offers are decided
After interviews, Curtin ranks applicants on a new weighted score.
- ATAR or equivalent: 40. Your actual ATAR, not the predicted one.
- MMI: 40. Your interview performance counts as much as your ATAR.
- UCAT ANZ: 20. Casper is not part of the offer score.
- Nothing else counts. Personal statements, references, awards and certificates are not part of selection. Do not send them.
- Offers. Made through TISC, then direct offers from Curtin until all places are filled. Curtin cannot give individual feedback.
Pathways and 2027 dates
About 110 places are available in 2027. It is the only direct-entry medical degree in Western Australia.
Entry pathways
- Rural. Up to 25% of places for WA, Northern Territory and South Australian applicants who have lived at least 10 years in total, or 5 years in a row, in a Modified Monash MM 2-7 area since Year 1. You get up to 5 adjustment points (capped at 99.95) and compete only with other rural applicants.
- Equity. For WA school leavers who qualify for Curtin's StepUp Bonus, which adds 5 points to your ATAR (capped at 99.95). If you qualify through your school, you are considered automatically through TISC. StepUp based on financial hardship needs its own application.
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander. Apply directly to Curtin Medical School, with no TISC application, UCAT ANZ or Casper. Eligible applicants have a Formal Yarning Session with the Aboriginal Health Team, then shortlisted applicants attend MMIs in the December or January round.
- Bonded places. Bonded Medical Program places are allocated across all pathways and cannot be applied for directly.

How to prepare
- Know Curtin's focus. Curtin wants more doctors who are generalists, with primary care skills and teamwork, to meet Western Australia's needs, including rural and remote areas.
- Practice critical appraisal. Read a health news story or short data claim, then say out loud what it shows, what it does not, and what you would want to know next.
- Time your answers. Practice short answers with a clear structure, then reset fully before the next station.
- Watch your email. Keep your TISC contact details current and check junk mail, because interview invitations go there.
The MMI is worth as much as your ATAR. At 40% of the offer score, a strong interview can move you up the list.
Practice questions
Questions in the style of a MMI (mostly in person) station, written for applicants to Curtin University (Curtin Medical School). They are practice questions, not the school's own. Open one for what a strong answer does.
Some clinics have stopped bulk billing, so patients now pay an out-of-pocket fee for a standard GP consultation. How do you think this shift affects the wider healthcare system in Australia?
Trace the knock-on effects, such as delayed care and busier emergency departments, and say who is hit hardest.
Roleplay: You are a medical student on a rural placement. The town's only GP, Dr. Harris, tells you privately that they are exhausted and burned out, and plan to leave town next week with no replacement. Speak with Dr. Harris.
Listen first and show care for the doctor, then gently raise what the town needs and who could help.
Telehealth has expanded access to care in remote areas, but it has real limits. What do you see as the main practical and social barriers to relying on telehealth in rural Australian communities?
Cover both practical limits like internet and physical exams and social ones like trust, then suggest how to work around them.
A supply delay means your local GP clinic only has enough flu vaccines this week for about half of the patients booked in. How would you decide who gets vaccinated this week, and what criteria would you use?
Set out clear, fair criteria based on risk, explain how you would tell the patients who must wait, and stay open to exceptions.
Australia has some of the highest skin cancer rates in the world. Despite decades of campaigns like Slip, Slop, Slap, many young people still take risks in the sun. Why does public health messaging sometimes fail, and what could make it work better?
Give reasons grounded in how young people think, then suggest one or two specific, testable changes.
You are applying straight from school through the UCAT ANZ pathway. You have not had the extra years of life experience a graduate applicant has, so what have you done to build the maturity to talk with vulnerable patients?
Use one or two real examples where you supported someone, and say what you learned about listening.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Curtin medicine interview online or in person?
Mostly in person. Curtin's MMIs are primarily face to face, with limited online interviews where needed, such as for interstate or overseas applicants. Non-WA applicants are interviewed online in the late January round.
How much does the interview count at Curtin?
The MMI is 40% of the offer score, alongside ATAR or equivalent (40%) and UCAT ANZ (20%). Getting an interview depends on ATAR, Casper and UCAT ANZ in the ratio 35:35:30.
When are Curtin medicine interviews for 2027 entry?
The December round is on 3 and 7 December 2026, the mid-January round on 7 January 2027, and the late January round (online, non-WA applicants) on 22 January 2027. Curtin says these dates may change.
What ATAR do you need for Curtin Medicine?
The minimum is an ATAR of 95 for school leavers, which can include rural or StepUp adjustments. Meeting it does not guarantee an interview or an offer.
Do I need the UCAT ANZ and Casper for Curtin?
Yes, both in the year you apply, unless you apply through the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander entry pathway. Scores count only for the next year's admission, so reapplicants must resit.
