UWA Medicine Interview (MMI): Format, Dates and Assured Pathway

What happens at UWA's medicine MMI, how you get an invitation, and how it decides your offer.

UWA interviews domestic school leavers and graduates with an MMI: 8 stations, each with a different interviewer, 2 minutes to read the question and 5 minutes to answer, about 70 to 75 minutes including registration. The interview is 50% of your final rank, with ATAR 30% and UCAT ANZ 20% for school leavers, or GPA 30% and GAMSAT 20% for graduates.

What happens on the day

Domestic school leavers and domestic graduates sit the same MMI format. You move around 8 numbered stations in order, with a different interviewer at each one.

The format

  • 8 stations, one question each. The question is given to you in writing. The interviewer does not have to read it out or ask set follow-up questions.
  • 2 minutes, then 5. Each station takes 7 minutes: 2 minutes to think about the question, then 5 minutes to answer out loud.
  • About 70 to 75 minutes. That is the whole process, including registration.
  • Confidentiality. Applicants and interviewers must agree to a statement of confidentiality to take part.
  • International applicants. A panel of two interviewers, about 50 minutes, with typically five MMI-style questions that are not timed one by one.

What the stations assess

UWA lists ten attributes: accountability, ethical and moral judgment, communication skills, management skills, problem solving, self-awareness, teamwork and collaboration, conflict resolution, empathy and resilience.

  • No trick questions. There is no single correct answer. Interviewers score only what you say in response to each question.
  • No specialist knowledge. Questions do not need health or science knowledge, though some idea of what a medical career involves helps.
  • Questions change. They come from a large pool, change each year and are not shared with coaching companies.

How you get an interview

School leavers and graduates are shortlisted in different ways. UWA says you are ranked for offers against other eligible applicants within your quota.

School leavers (Assured Pathway)

  • UCAT ANZ decides the invitation. There is no set minimum score. The cut-off is set by ranking within each quota each year, and past cut-offs are not published.
  • The overall score. UWA uses the overall UCAT ANZ score from the cognitive sections. It may also use the Situational Judgement score.
  • Minimum ATAR 98. For the Rural, Broadway and High Academic Achiever quotas. The minimum is 90 for the Indigenous school leaver pathway.
  • This year's UCAT only. You must sit the UCAT ANZ in the year you apply. Scores do not carry over.

Graduates

  • Minimums. A bachelor's degree, a selection GPA of at least 5.5, and a GAMSAT overall score of at least 55 with no section under 50.
  • Shortlisting. GPA 60% and GAMSAT 40%, using standardized scores.
  • Last year's interviewees. For 2026 entry, domestic applicants who got an interview averaged a GPA of 6.82 and a GAMSAT of 68.53. These are averages, not cut-offs.
  • Short notice. Shortlisted graduates are usually emailed one to two weeks before the interview date.

How offers are decided

After interviews, UWA ranks everyone in each quota again, and the interview carries the most weight.

  • School leavers. ATAR or equivalent 30%, interview 50%, UCAT ANZ 20%.
  • Graduates. GPA 30%, GAMSAT 20%, interview 50%.
  • Rural applicants. The same parts scaled down (37.5% interview), plus a rurality rating worth 25%.
  • Indigenous graduate entry. Ranked on GPA and an interview by the Centre for Aboriginal Medical and Dental Health (CAMDH).
  • Deferral. School leavers can defer for one year. Graduate offers cannot be deferred.

Half your rank is the interview. A strong MMI can lift you past applicants with a higher ATAR or GPA.

Routes and dates for 2027 entry

UWA's MD is a 4-year graduate degree. School leavers get a conditional MD place through the Assured Pathway, and graduates apply after a first degree.

Assured Pathway (school leavers)

You study UWA's Bachelor of Biomedicine (Specialised) with the Integrated Medical Sciences and Clinical Practice major, then move into the MD. You need a selection GPA of at least 5.5 in the first two years, and both degrees take six years.

  • 1 July to 5 August 2026. UCAT ANZ testing window.
  • 30 September 2026. TISC closing date for the Assured Pathway to Medicine. UWA's Rural Eligibility Form is due through TISC by the same date.
  • After WACE exams. Interview invitations are planned to be emailed.
  • 30 November to 11 December 2026. Interviews are planned on selected dates in this period, and the dates may change. UWA cannot guarantee another date if you cannot attend.
  • 24 December 2026. TISC main round offers. Second round offers follow on 20 January 2027.

Graduate entry

Domestic graduates apply through GEMSAS. International graduates apply directly to UWA and may use the MCAT instead of GAMSAT.

  • 1 to 29 May 2026. GEMSAS applications open and close.
  • Early September 2026. GEMSAS releases interview offers.
  • 22 September to 3 October 2026. Online interviews are expected in this period. Not every date is available.
  • End of October or early November 2026. GEMSAS releases place offers. The MD starts in January.

Rural and Indigenous pathways

  • Rural. Your home address must have been in an MM-2 to MM-7 area under the Modified Monash Model for 5 years in a row or 10 years in total. About 30% of domestic places are for rural applicants.
  • Rural help with interviews. UWA's Rural Clinical School says rural Year 12 students may get financial and logistical help to attend UCAT testing and medical school interviews in Perth. Its 2026 dates table lists the UWA interview as in person, with dates to be announced for December.
  • Indigenous. Up to 10% of domestic places. School leavers can contact the School of Indigenous Studies, and graduates the Centre for Aboriginal Medical and Dental Health (Boola Boola Djinda).
  • Broadway. Twenty school leaver places go to students who did all of Year 12 at a UWA Broadway school.
  • Bonded places. 28.5% of domestic places are Bonded Medical Places, given out across all quotas from the ranked list.

How to prepare

UWA's own advice is to link your experiences to the attributes it assesses and practice speaking for five minutes.

  • Use the 2 minutes well. Questions are in writing, so practice reading a prompt fast, spotting the key issue and planning two or three points.
  • Time yourself. Speak out loud for five minutes to learn how much you can say, and give a clear, structured answer.
  • Prepare examples for each attribute. Have a real story for teamwork, conflict, a mistake you owned and a time you bounced back.
  • Know WA health issues. Read about rural and remote care, fly-in fly-out doctors and Aboriginal health in Western Australia.
  • Sound like yourself. UWA warns that rehearsed, coached answers are easy to spot when many applicants went to the same training.

Practice questions

Questions in the style of a MMI station, written for applicants to The University of Western Australia (Doctor of Medicine). They are practice questions, not the school's own. Open one for what a strong answer does.

You're applying for medicine straight from school. What makes you confident that medicine is right for you now, rather than exploring other fields at university first?

Point to specific experiences that tested your interest, and be honest about what you still need to learn.

A co-worker at your cafe job has been arriving late and taking long breaks for two weeks, leaving you to handle the morning rush alone. How would you raise it while keeping a good working relationship?

Talk to them privately first, stay curious about why it is happening, and agree on a fair next step before involving a manager.

Many remote communities rely on fly-in fly-out doctors, which can disrupt continuity of care. If you were one of those doctors, how would you make sure a patient with a complex chronic illness still gets consistent care?

Give practical steps like clear handover notes, working with local health workers and involving the patient's family.

Closing the Gap is a national commitment to health equity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. How would you make sure your own day-to-day practice as a doctor contributes to this goal?

Name concrete habits such as listening, cultural safety and working with Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services.

You and a close friend are in the same first-year anatomy unit. During a practical exam, you notice your friend looking at notes hidden in their sleeve. You know they have serious family problems. What do you do?

Balance care for your friend with honesty and fairness, and explain who you would talk to and why.

Why do you think many doctors are reluctant to practice in rural and remote areas of Australia, and what changes could encourage them to build careers outside the major cities?

Give several reasons, such as isolation and training access, then suggest realistic fixes like rural training and support for families.

Frequently asked questions

How many stations are in the UWA MMI?

Eight. Each station has one written question and a different interviewer. You get 2 minutes to think and 5 minutes to answer, and the whole process takes about 70 to 75 minutes.

Is the UWA medicine interview online?

GEMSAS says graduate interviews are online. UWA's course page does not say whether domestic school leaver interviews are online, but UWA's Rural Clinical School lists the UWA interview for Year 12 students as in person. Shortlisted applicants are told the details.

When are UWA medicine interviews for 2027 entry?

Domestic school leaver interviews are planned for selected dates from 30 November to 11 December 2026. Graduate interviews are expected within 22 September to 3 October 2026.

Does the interview count more than the UCAT at UWA?

Yes. For school leavers the interview is 50% of the final rank, ATAR is 30% and UCAT ANZ is 20%. The UCAT ANZ decides who gets an interview in the first place.

What UCAT score do I need for a UWA interview?

UWA has no set minimum. The threshold is set by ranking within each quota each year, and UWA does not publish past cut-offs.
