ANU Medicine Interview (MChD): Format, Dates and Pathways
What happens at ANU's medicine interview, how you get one, and how it decides your offer.
ANU interviewed GEMSAS applicants online, in two parts, from 4 to 11 September 2026 for 2027 entry. Applicants are picked for interview on a 50/50 mix of weighted GPA (minimum 5.0) and GAMSAT (at least 50 overall and in each section). Offers are then 50% interview and 50% that GPA and GAMSAT score.
Key facts (2027 entry)
- Format
- An interview in two parts covering a range of topics and scenarios. ANU does not say whether it is an MMI or a panel, or how many stations there are.
- Online or in person
- Online. You do not need to be in Canberra.
- When (2027 entry)
- Friday 4 to Friday 11 September 2026 for GEMSAS applicants (now past). ANU lists Indigenous pathway interviews in late July and international interviews in mid to late July.
- Who is interviewed
- Applicants ranked on a 50/50 composite of standardized weighted GPA and standardized overall GAMSAT. Minimums: weighted GPA 5.0 and GAMSAT 50 overall and in each section.
- How the interview counts
- 50% of the offer score. The other 50% is the GPA and GAMSAT composite.
- Places (2027)
- 63 Commonwealth Supported Places, 26 Bonded Medical Places and up to 30 international places. About 40 are reserved for students from an ANU undergraduate pathway.
- Other routes
- Bachelor of Health Science pathway (up to 40 domestic places), an Indigenous pathway with uncapped places, and a 29% rural share of domestic places.
What happens on the day
ANU's interview is held online in two parts, so you can do it from home. ANU says it covers a range of topics and scenarios.
- Online. All interviews are online, and there is no need to be in Canberra. International applicants interview by Zoom.
- Two parts. ANU does not publish whether the parts are MMI stations or a panel, how long they last, or how they are scored.
- Your time slot. ANU said interviewees would be sent their allocated dates and times in late August or early September.
- Trained interviewers. GEMSAS interviews are run by trained interviewers, and your academic results are not discussed.
One interview only. Through GEMSAS you interview at one medical school only. Your standardized score can also be used by schools lower on your preference list.
How you get an interview
Domestic graduate-entry applicants apply through GEMSAS. ANU ranks them on a composite score that weights your standardized weighted GPA and standardized overall GAMSAT 50/50.
Minimums
- Degree. A completed bachelor's degree (AQF Level 7, at least 3 years full time), or be in its final year.
- GPA 5.0. A weighted GPA of at least 5.0. Your most recent year counts three times, the year before twice, and the year before that once.
- GAMSAT 50. At least 50 overall and at least 50 in each section.
- Not a guarantee. Meeting the minimums does not guarantee an interview.
Bonuses
A bonus is added to the GPA and GAMSAT composite, once you meet both minimums. Only your highest bonus counts.
- 2%. A standalone Honours degree or a Masters by Research.
- 4%. A PhD, completed before you apply.
How offers are decided
After interviews, ANU ranks everyone on a combined score.
- Interview: 50%. Your interview score.
- GPA and GAMSAT: 50%. The same composite used to pick applicants for interview.
- Type of place. Domestic offers are a Commonwealth Supported Place or a Bonded Medical Place.
- No deferral. An offer is only valid for the year it is made.
- Still finishing your degree? You get a conditional offer. Proof of completion must reach GEMSAS by close of business on 23 December 2026, with a weighted GPA of at least 5.0.
Other routes and dates for 2027 entry
The MChD is a 4-year graduate degree, but there are several ways in besides the standard GEMSAS route.
From school: the Bachelor of Health Science
ANU's 3-year Bachelor of Health Science has a pre-medicine pathway that leads to the MChD without the GAMSAT. Direct applications to ANU for this degree are for school leavers.
- Up to 40 places. Up to 40 domestic BHLTH students get an MChD offer each year, and about 30% of these places go preferentially to rural applicants.
- How they rank. 40% weighted average mark (minimum 75%), 40% interview and 20% written selection criteria (answers of up to 200 words).
- Pass the interview. You need a raw interview score of at least 60% to be considered.
- Dates. Each year the pathway form opens 31 March and closes 30 July. Interviews are in early to mid-September and outcomes come out in January.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants
Places are uncapped and can be offered on top of the usual cap. On the standard Indigenous pathway, which needs the GAMSAT, you can apply directly to ANU (early March to 30 June) or through GEMSAS.
- GPA 4.5. The Indigenous pathways need a weighted GPA of at least 4.5. The standard Indigenous pathway also needs GAMSAT 50 overall and in each section.
- No-GAMSAT options. Current ANU students or alumni with set science or health courses, and allied health graduates or final-year students from five listed universities, do not need the GAMSAT. These pathways apply directly to ANU.
- Dates. ANU lists Indigenous interviews in late July and offers in August. Admitted students are automatically considered for a scholarship.
Rural background
ANU offers 29% of its domestic places to students from a rural background. That means living in an MM2 to MM7 area for 5 years in a row or 10 years in total.
Answer the rurality section of your GEMSAS application and email your evidence. For 2027 entry, it was due by 5pm AEST on 15 June 2026.
Key dates (domestic, 2027 entry)
- 29 May 2026. GEMSAS applications closed at 5pm AEST (they opened 1 May).
- Early September 2026. GEMSAS released interview offers.
- 4 to 11 September 2026. ANU interviews were held online.
- Late 2026. GEMSAS says place offers are released at the end of October or early November. ANU's own page says domestic offers come out November to December.
How to prepare
- Know why ANU. The MChD includes rural weeks around Canberra and south-east NSW, with a focus on Indigenous health in year 2. Think about what rural and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities need from doctors.
- Half your offer is the interview. A strong interview can lift you past applicants with a higher GPA or GAMSAT.
- Practice on camera. The interview is online, so rehearse on video with good light, steady sound and eye contact with the camera.
- Mix question types. ANU does not publish its question format, so practice ethical scenarios, motivation questions and health system topics out loud and timed.
Use your degree. As a graduate applicant, link what you learned in your first degree or job to how you would work as a doctor.
Practice questions
Questions in the style of a Interview (online) station, written for applicants to Australian National University (Doctor of Medicine and Surgery). They are practice questions, not the school's own. Open one for what a strong answer does.
Australia has a shortage of doctors in rural and remote areas. How does a program like the Bonded Medical Program try to address this, and what else does it take for a doctor to do well and stay in a remote community?
Explain what the program does in plain terms, then add a few real factors like support, family and community ties.
Closing the Gap is a national commitment to health equity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. How would you make sure your own day-to-day practice as a doctor contributes to this goal?
Give concrete actions such as cultural safety, listening and working with Aboriginal health workers, not just general support.
You are working in a regional hospital and discharging an Aboriginal patient who needs ongoing chronic disease management. You could refer them to a mainstream clinic or an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service. How would you discuss these options?
Put the patient's choice at the center, explain both options fairly, and ask what matters to them.
You've already completed a first degree. What happened during your undergraduate studies that made you decide to sit the GAMSAT and move into medicine?
Tell one specific turning point and show how your first degree shaped the doctor you want to be.
A friend who is also applying to medicine tells you in confidence that they exaggerated their rural background on their application. They say it doesn't matter because they plan to work rurally anyway. How do you respond?
Show you take honesty seriously, explain why it matters for fairness and patient trust, and say what you would actually do next.
Telehealth has expanded access to care in remote areas, but it has real limits. What do you see as the main practical and social barriers to relying on telehealth in rural Australian communities?
Name a few concrete barriers like internet access, physical exams and trust, then suggest how care could still reach those patients.

Is the ANU interview an MMI?
ANU does not say. It describes the interview as being in two parts and covering a range of topics and scenarios, and does not publish stations or timing.
How much does the interview count at ANU?
Half. Offers are based on 50% interview score and 50% the GPA and GAMSAT composite that was used to pick applicants for interview.
When are ANU medicine interviews for 2027 entry?
GEMSAS applicants interviewed online from Friday 4 to Friday 11 September 2026. ANU lists Indigenous pathway interviews in late July and international interviews in mid to late July.
Can I get into ANU medicine from high school?
Not directly into the MChD, which is a graduate degree. School leavers can start ANU's Bachelor of Health Science, whose pre-medicine pathway offers up to 40 domestic MChD places each year without the GAMSAT, based on marks, an interview and written answers.
