Macquarie Medicine Interview (MMI): Format, Dates and Entry

What happens at Macquarie's medicine interview, how you get one, and how it decides your offer.

Macquarie interviewed domestic applicants with a face-to-face Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) on Saturday 26 September 2026, rotating through a series of short stations. Applicants are picked for interview on 50% weighted GPA and 50% GAMSAT. Offers are then 50% GPA and 50% MMI, so GAMSAT does not count at the offer stage.

What happens on the day

Macquarie uses a Multiple Mini Interview (MMI). You rotate through a series of short interview stations, each with a new task.

  • Face-to-face. Domestic MMIs were held in person on Saturday 26 September 2026.
  • Station details not published. Macquarie does not say how many stations there are or how long each one lasts.
  • International applicants. You get a modified MMI by videoconference, and hear back about 2 weeks after your interview.
  • Trained interviewers. GEMSAS interviews are run by trained interviewers, and your academic results are not discussed.

You must pass it. Macquarie lists satisfactory MMI performance as an entry requirement, on top of your GPA and GAMSAT.

How you get an interview

Domestic applicants apply through GEMSAS. Macquarie ranks them for interview on 50% weighted GPA and 50% GAMSAT, after they pass the minimums.

Minimums

  • Degree. A bachelor's degree (AQF Level 7 or a recognized equivalent), completed within 10 years of when you would start, or be in its final year.
  • GPA 5.0 or WAM 65. Your final three full-time years are weighted 3, 2 and 1. Entry is competitive, so the GPA needed for an interview is likely to be well above 5.0.
  • GAMSAT 50. At least 50 overall and 50 in each section, sat within four years of starting.
  • Assumed knowledge. Human anatomy and human physiology. There are no other recommended studies.

Bonuses

A 3% bonus is added to the weighted GPA of three groups, up to 5% if you are in more than one. Bonuses are not open to international applicants.

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants. 3% on your weighted GPA.
  • Rural applicants. 3% on your weighted GPA. Macquarie's page does not define rural. GEMSAS's general rule is living in an MM2 to MM7 area for 5 years in a row or 10 years in total.
  • Macquarie Bachelor of Clinical Science applicants. 3% on your weighted GPA.

How offers are decided

After the MMI, Macquarie ranks applicants on two things only.

  • MMI: 50%. Your interview score.
  • GPA: 50%. Your weighted GPA. GAMSAT is used to pick who gets an interview, not in the offer rank.
  • Indigenous applicants. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants are considered case by case.
  • Still finishing your degree? Offers are conditional, and your study must be complete by close of business on 23 December 2026 (22 January 2027 for universities with three semesters).

Other routes and dates for 2027 entry

The Macquarie MD is a 4-year, in-person degree at North Ryde, with clinical care at Macquarie University Hospital and a placement in India.

From school: the Bachelor of Clinical Science

Macquarie's fast-tracked Bachelor of Clinical Science is designed to prepare students for the MD and other graduate-entry medicine courses.

  • Guaranteed interview. If you place in the top 30 GEMSAS-ranked clinical science students and meet the MD minimums, you are guaranteed an MD interview.
  • Bonus. Macquarie BClinSci applicants also get the 3% GPA bonus.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants

You can use the standard GEMSAS route, the Indigenous Pathway, or both. The Indigenous Pathway is a direct application through Macquarie's Applicant Portal. For 2027 entry it was open from 1 March to 1 October.

  • GAMSAT optional. Submitting GAMSAT scores is optional on this pathway.
  • Support. Interview and offer decisions are made case by case, with interview support. Walanga Muru, Macquarie's Indigenous unit, can advise.
  • Proof needed. You need evidence of Aboriginality by the deadline, such as a form signed by an officer of an incorporated Indigenous organization in your community.

International applicants

International applicants apply directly to Macquarie. If you live outside Australia you can send an MCAT score (500 or more) instead of GAMSAT.

Key dates (domestic, 2027 entry)

  • 29 or 30 May 2026. GEMSAS says applications closed at 5pm AEST on 29 May (they opened 1 May). Macquarie's course page lists a 30 May close.
  • Early September 2026. GEMSAS released interview offers.
  • 26 September 2026. Domestic MMIs, face-to-face.
  • End of October or early November 2026. GEMSAS says place offers are released in this window.
  • 22 February 2027. Session 1 starts at North Ryde.

How to prepare

  • The MMI is half your offer. GAMSAT drops out of the offer rank, so a strong MMI can make up for a GPA near the cut-off.
  • Practice in person. Rehearse with a friend in the room, standing up and moving between stations, so the face-to-face format feels normal.
  • Get to the point. Short stations reward a clear first answer. Practice giving your main point in the first 30 seconds.
  • Know why Macquarie. The MD includes clinical care at Macquarie University Hospital and a 12-week placement at the Apollo Hospital in India. Think about what training in a university-led health center and an overseas health system could teach you.

Rehearse role-plays. Practice stations where you calm someone down, give an honest answer, or help a friend weigh a hard choice.

Practice questions

Questions in the style of a MMI (in person) station, written for applicants to Macquarie University (Doctor of Medicine). They are practice questions, not the school's own. Open one for what a strong answer does.

Australia has a mixed public and private health system. Critics say the private health insurance rebate subsidizes wealthier people at the expense of the public system, while supporters say it takes pressure off public hospitals. How would you weigh these two views?

Lay out both sides with a concrete example, then give a clear, balanced view and say why.

Roleplay: your friend tore a knee ligament playing netball. The public waiting list for surgery could be over a year, or they could pay to have it done privately in a few weeks, using most of their savings. They ask for your help deciding.

Listen first, help them think through the options without deciding for them, and suggest who they could ask for medical advice.

You are a junior medical student on placement in a busy emergency department. The waiting room is full, and a patient who has waited for hours looks increasingly pale and distressed. The nurses are all busy with a major trauma. What do you do?

Put patient safety first, stay within your role as a student, and say exactly who you would alert and how.

Roleplay: your co-worker Sam at a busy cafe has been arriving late and taking long breaks for two weeks, leaving you to handle the morning rush alone. Talk to Sam about it while keeping a good working relationship.

Open with concern rather than blame, ask what is going on, and agree on a fair next step together.

You're a medical student observing a consultation where a patient with early-stage dementia agrees to a minor elective procedure. The next day her husband calls and demands it be canceled, saying she isn't competent to decide. How should the team respond?

Explain that capacity is about the specific decision, keep the patient at the center, and involve the senior team.

You've already completed a first degree. What happened during your undergraduate studies that made you decide to sit the GAMSAT and move into medicine?

Tell one specific turning point and show how your first degree shaped the doctor you want to be.
