UTAS Medicine Interview: Does Tasmania Interview? ATAR and UCAT

Whether the University of Tasmania interviews for medicine, how it picks students instead, and the dates for 2027 entry.

The University of Tasmania does not interview for its Medicine Program. School leavers are ranked on ATAR (minimum 95 after any rural adjustment), and applicants with the same ATAR are ranked on UCAT ANZ. At least 75% of domestic places go to Tasmanians. The exception is the Aboriginal Entry Pathway, whose page lists an interview with representatives of the Medicine Admissions Committee.

Key facts (2027 entry)

Interview
None for most applicants. UTAS says it does not conduct interviews during selection for the Medicine Program. The Aboriginal Entry Pathway page lists an interview with representatives of the Medicine Admissions Committee.
How school leavers are ranked
ATAR first. Ties are broken on the combined score of the 3 cognitive UCAT ANZ subtests. Situational Judgement is not used.
Minimum ATAR
95, including any rural adjustment (up to 5 extra points through the Rural Application Process).
Tasmanian vs interstate
At least 75% of domestic places go to Tasmanians. Half of domestic places are for rural students (MM2 to MM7).
Prerequisites
Year 12 English and Tasmanian Senior Secondary Chemistry (or equivalents) within the last five years.
Applications (2027 entry)
Directly to UTAS, 1 August to 11:59 pm AEST 30 September 2026. No late applications.
Course and campuses
5 years full-time (up to 7). Hobart, Launceston or Cradle Coast. Offers are made separately for each campus.
Other routes
Graduate entry (GPA and GAMSAT), the Tasmanian Rural Training Stream (20 places at Cradle Coast) and the Aboriginal Entry Pathway.

How offers are decided

Without an interview, your ATAR does most of the work. The UCAT is a tie-breaker, but every applicant needs a valid score.

School leavers

  • ATAR ranks you. ATAR (or an ATAR equivalent from within 5 years) is the primary ranking method. The minimum, after any rural adjustment, is 95.
  • UCAT ANZ breaks ties. Applicants with the same ATAR are ranked on the combined score of the 3 cognitive subtests. Situational Judgement is not counted.
  • One year only. A UCAT ANZ score counts only for entry the year after you sit it.
  • Prerequisites. Year 12 English (EAL/D is not accepted) and Tasmanian Senior Secondary Chemistry (CHM415115) or equivalent, both within five years. Without Chemistry you must pass a UTAS foundation Chemistry unit before you start.
  • No earlier degree study. To apply as a school leaver you must not have recorded results in a higher education diploma or above. You must also be at least 17 by 1 February of your first year.

Graduates

  • GPA and GAMSAT. A minimum unweighted GPA of 5.25 and at least 50 in all three GAMSAT sections. A completed Masters by Research adds 0.2 to your GPA, and a PhD adds 0.4.
  • UTAS Bachelor of Biomedicine. From 2027 there is a quota for graduates of this degree, also selected on GPA and GAMSAT.

About 30% are bonded. UTAS must enroll about 30% of domestic students each year in the Bonded Medical Program, which means working in a regional, rural or remote area after you graduate.

Is there an interview?

For almost everyone, no. The course page says plainly that the University of Tasmania does not conduct interviews during selection for the Medicine Program.

  • School leavers. Selected on ATAR and UCAT ANZ only.
  • Graduates. Selected on GPA and GAMSAT.
  • Aboriginal Entry Pathway. The exception. Its page lists an interview with one or more representatives of the Medicine Admissions Committee for both school leavers and non-school leavers.
  • No work or life experience route. UTAS does not take applications based on work or life experience, or on VET/TAFE study.

Applying elsewhere too? Other medical schools on your list may interview, so check each one and prepare for an MMI if they do.

Tasmanian and interstate applicants

UTAS saves most domestic places for Tasmanians. Interstate students can still apply, but they compete for a smaller share.

  • At least 75% to Tasmanians. For school leavers, that means finishing the TCE or IB at a Tasmanian school within 5 years of starting the course.
  • Tasmanians with past uni study. You count if you live in Tasmania now and have for 5 years in a row, or have lived there 10 years in total and lived there within the ten years before the course starts.
  • 50% rural quota. Half of domestic places go to rural students (MM2 to MM7), including 25% from MM3 to MM7. All of Tasmania counts as MM2 to MM7.
  • Choose campuses. Order Hobart, Launceston and Cradle Coast by preference. Offers are made separately for each campus.

Rural and Aboriginal pathways

There is no separate rural form. You give your address history in the normal UTAS application and are assessed for the rural quotas from that.

Rural Application Process (RAP)

  • Who. Anyone who has lived in an MM2 to MM7 area of Australia for 5 years in a row or 10 years in total by the start of the course.
  • ATAR boost. Year 12 leavers get 4 extra ATAR points from an MM2 area and 5 from an MM3 to MM7 area. Applicants with past uni study can use the rural quotas but get no ATAR adjustment.

Tasmanian Rural Training Stream

20 domestic places where you study all five years at the Cradle Coast campus (Burnie) and the Rural Clinical School. You are assessed on the same ATAR and UCAT (or GPA and GAMSAT) criteria.

  • Priority tiers. Tier 1 is Tasmanian MM3 to MM7 areas and postcodes starting 72 or 73, then other Tasmanian MM2 areas, then interstate MM3 to MM7, then interstate MM1 to MM2.
  • How to apply. Choose Cradle Coast in your campus preferences and list every home address since birth.

Aboriginal Entry Pathway (AEP)

For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants, with more flexible entry criteria and no UCAT or GAMSAT. You fill in the AEP application form and also complete the standard UTAS application.

  • School leavers need. Confirmation of eligibility, a personal statement, Year 12 English and Chemistry (or equivalent), a competitive ATAR and an interview.
  • Non-school leavers need. Confirmation of eligibility, a personal statement, health-related qualifications and experience (such as Aboriginal health worker or nurse), English and Chemistry, and an interview.

Dates for 2027 entry

UTAS takes applications directly through its own portal. The course page does not list domestic offer dates.

  • 15 May 2026. UCAT ANZ bookings closed (final deadline 5 June).
  • 1 July to 5 August 2026. UCAT ANZ testing window.
  • 1 August 2026. UTAS Medicine applications open.
  • 30 September 2026, 11:59 pm AEST. Applications close. Late applications are not accepted.

Old date on one page. The Rural Application Process page still shows 30 September 2025. The 2027 course page gives 30 September 2026, and rural applicants use the same application.

How to prepare

  • Your ATAR matters most. With no interview, your ATAR is the main thing that ranks you. Check you will meet both prerequisites in time.
  • Still prepare for the UCAT. It breaks ties between applicants with the same ATAR, and every school leaver needs a valid score.
  • Give your full address history. Rural quota places and the Rural Training Stream depend on the addresses you list, so include every one.
  • AEP applicants: practice the interview. Practice speaking about why you want medicine, your community and what you would bring to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health.

Practice questions

Questions in the style of a No interview station, written for applicants to University of Tasmania (Tasmanian School of Medicine). They are practice questions, not the school's own. Open one for what a strong answer does.

Australia has a shortage of doctors in rural and remote areas. Why do you think many doctors are reluctant to practice outside the major cities, and what could encourage them to build careers there?

Name real reasons such as isolation, training and family, then give practical fixes like rural training pathways that keep students in the region.

Closing the Gap draws attention to the differences in health outcomes between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Australians. How has your awareness of this shaped your motivation for medicine, and what role do you see for yourself?

Be honest and specific about what you have learned, and describe a realistic role rather than a grand promise.

You are a GP doing a telehealth consultation with an elderly patient on a remote farm who is worried about a skin spot. The video connection is poor, and the patient says they don't have the time or money to drive four hours to the nearest clinic. How do you manage this situation?

Take the worry seriously, be clear about what telehealth can and cannot do, and find a practical way to get the spot checked.

Roleplay: You are a medical student on a rural placement. The town's only GP tells you privately that they are exhausted and burned out, and plan to leave town next week with no replacement. Speak with the GP.

Listen first and show care for the doctor, then gently raise what happens to patients and who could help.

You are a medical student on placement at a remote clinic. An older Aboriginal patient who mainly speaks their own language needs to discuss new test results, and the only person available to interpret is the patient's teenage grandson. What are the concerns, and how should the team proceed?

Name the risks to accuracy and privacy, ask what the patient wants, and look for a professional interpreter before using family.

Some students take a Bonded Medical Program place mainly to get into medicine, then find the return of service obligation hard later on. If you took a bonded place, how would you make sure you were a real asset to the community you worked in?

Show you understand the commitment and give concrete ways you would build trust and stay connected to the community.

Frequently asked questions

Does UTAS interview for Medicine?

No, not for most applicants. UTAS says it does not conduct interviews during selection for the Medicine Program. The exception is the Aboriginal Entry Pathway, whose page lists an interview with representatives of the Medicine Admissions Committee.

What ATAR do I need for UTAS Medicine?

The minimum is 95, including any rural adjustment. Year 12 leavers from rural areas can get up to 5 extra ATAR points through the Rural Application Process. Meeting the minimum does not guarantee an offer.

How does UTAS use the UCAT?

Every school leaver needs a valid UCAT ANZ score. It is used to rank applicants with the same ATAR, using the combined score of the 3 cognitive subtests and not Situational Judgement.

Can interstate students get into UTAS Medicine?

Yes, but at least 75% of domestic places go to Tasmanians. Interstate rural applicants can also use the rural quota and the Tasmanian Rural Training Stream, where they come after Tasmanian applicants.

When do UTAS Medicine applications close for 2027?

At 11:59 pm AEST on 30 September 2026. You apply directly to UTAS, and late applications are not accepted.
