UQ Medicine Interview (MMI): Format, Dates and Scoring (2027)
What happens at UQ's medicine MMI, how you get an invitation, and how it decides your offer.
UQ interviews with an online MMI on Zoom: 8 stations, each with one assessor, 2 minutes to read the scenario and 7 minutes to respond. The format is the same for every UQ pathway. The MMI is 50% of your final rank, alongside ATAR and UCAT ANZ (25% each) for school leavers, or GPA and GAMSAT (25% each) for graduates.
Key facts (2027 entry)
- Format
- Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs), with a different assessor at each station. No acting or role-play stations.
- Stations and timing
- 8 stations. At each, 2 minutes to read the scenario in silence, then 7 minutes to respond, with a reminder at the 6-minute mark and about 1 minute between stations.
- Online or in person
- Online by video conference (Zoom). Use a computer or tablet with a movable webcam, in a quiet room where you are alone for up to 2 hours.
- When (2027 entry)
- Graduate entry (GEMSAS): held in mid-September 2026. Provisional entry (school leavers, QTAC): scheduled for mid to late November 2026.
- Who is interviewed
- School leavers: ranked on UCAT ANZ, with an adjusted ATAR of 95 as the minimum. Graduates: ranked on a 50:50 mix of GPA and unweighted average GAMSAT.
- How the interview counts
- 50% of the final score, and you need a minimum MMI score. The other 50% is ATAR and UCAT ANZ (school leavers) or GPA and GAMSAT (graduates). Ties go to the higher MMI score.
- Rural pathways
- UQ's website says 28% of new domestic places go to applicants from a rural background (the GEMSAS guide says 28.5%). Regional pathways run in Central Queensland – Wide Bay (about 60 places) and Darling Downs – South West (about 36).
What happens on the day
UQ runs its MMI on Zoom. Each station is a separate virtual room, and staff move you from one to the next.
At each station
- 8 scenarios. Everyone answers 8 scenarios. Some rounds add a virtual waiting room, where you stay under exam conditions but get no extra scenario.
- 2 minutes to read. The assessor shares the scenario and questions on screen. You read them silently, not aloud.
- 7 minutes to respond. The scenario comes off screen while you talk, though you can ask to see it again briefly. A message appears when 1 minute is left.
- Finishing early is fine. You are marked on the quality of your answer, not its length. If you finish early, sit in silence until time is up.
- No role-play. UQ says it does not currently use acting or role-play stations.
Rules for your room
- Photo ID. Government-issued ID is checked at your first station. Provisional entry applicants may use a student ID.
- Room check. You show your room with your camera, including on and under your desk. Only your device, ID and water are allowed, plus any medical item UQ has approved in advance.
- No notes. No pens, paper, timers or second devices, and no other program open besides Zoom. Keep your hands in view.
- No late entry. If you are late, you will not be let in. UQ may be able to reschedule but cannot promise it.
Go to the briefing. UQ runs an online briefing session before the MMIs. It is optional, but UQ strongly recommends it.
How you get an interview
UQ's Doctor of Medicine is a 4-year postgraduate program. School leavers apply for a provisional place, and graduates apply through GEMSAS.
Provisional entry (school leavers)
You apply through QTAC in your final year of school, on your first attempt at Year 12. If you get an offer, you complete a first degree at UQ and then move into the MD.
- Minimums. An adjusted ATAR of 95 (or equivalent), Year 12 English, and a UCAT ANZ score from the year you apply.
- Ranked on UCAT ANZ. UQ's rules rank you on the total scaled score of the cognitive subtests (sections 1 to 3), with Situational Judgement and then Verbal Reasoning as tie-breakers. UQ's website says it is reviewing recent UCAT ANZ changes and will confirm how the score is calculated.
- Three stages. Rural-background applicants are invited first, until the rural sub-quota is filled. Then Queensland Year 12 students, until they make up at least 50% of invitations. Then everyone else.
- Last intake's cut-offs. For the 2026 intake (the last intake, not 2027), the lowest UCAT ANZ score invited to interview was 1960 for Rural Background Sub-quota applicants and 2290 for everyone else. UQ says these vary each year and can't be set in advance.
Graduate entry (GEMSAS)
- Minimums. A key degree with a UQ-equivalent GPA of at least 5.0 out of 7, finished in the last 10 years, and at least 50 in each GAMSAT section.
- 50:50 ranking. Invitations are ranked on your unweighted average GAMSAT score and your GPA (converted to a percentage), equally weighted. GPA breaks ties.
- Two steps to book. Accept the invitation in the GEMSAS portal, then book a time with UQ before the booking due date. Late bookings are only considered in exceptional circumstances.
- One interview. GEMSAS gives you one interview offer only. Your standardized score may be used by your other preferences.
- Recent cohort. Across the 2023 to 2025 domestic intakes, the average GPA was 6.66 and the average unweighted GAMSAT was 65.33.
How offers are decided
After interviews, everyone is ranked on a final score. You also need to reach a minimum MMI score.
- School leavers. ATAR 25%, UCAT ANZ cognitive score 25%, MMI 50%.
- Graduates. GPA 25%, unweighted average GAMSAT 25%, MMI 50%.
- Ties. The MMI score breaks ties on the final score.
- Bonded or not. Graduates are offered non-bonded places first, then Bonded Medical Places. School leavers preference the non-bonded and bonded QTAC codes separately and get an offer for the highest preference they are competitive for. A bonded student must work in eligible regional, rural or remote areas for 3 years after the MD.
- Graduate offers. Made in November, with a few more in December and January if needed. Declining a GEMSAS offer ends your chance of other GEMSAS offers that year.
- Feedback. After the admission period, graduates get their GAMSAT, GPA and MMI score compared with the cohort. UQ does not give feedback on your individual MMI performance.
The MMI is half your rank. A strong interview can move you a long way, but you still need to pass UQ's minimum MMI score.
Rural pathways, other routes and 2027 dates
UQ has a rural sub-quota and two regional Queensland pathways. Places are about 275 domestic each year.
Rural and regional routes
- Rural Background Sub-quota. UQ's sub-quota page says 28% of all new domestic places. The GEMSAS guide's UQ entry says 28.5% of places, in line with government quotas. You must have lived in an MM2 to MM7 area for 5 years in a row or 10 years in total. Eligible school leavers get 2 adjustments to their selection rank, and graduates get 2 adjustments to their unweighted average GAMSAT score.
- Central Queensland – Wide Bay. School leavers study CQUniversity's Bachelor of Medical Science (Pathway to Medicine) in Rockhampton or Bundaberg, with guaranteed entry to UQ's MD if they pass every unit. UCAT ANZ lists this course among those that use its test.
- Darling Downs – South West. School leavers study UniSQ's Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences (Medicine Pathway) in Toowoomba. Entry to the MD is guaranteed if they finish in minimum time with a GPA of 5.0. UCAT ANZ lists this pathway among those that use its test.
- Graduates in the regions. Choose a regional pathway in GEMSAS. You are ranked by tier (local residents first, then other rural applicants, then anyone interested), and accepting means all 4 years in regional Queensland.
Other routes
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander pathways. Apply through UQ's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit. Applicants do the MMI and a semi-structured interview, and GAMSAT is not mandatory for graduates.
- Bachelor of Medical Science / Doctor of Medicine. A dual program for school leavers who are sure about medicine: 2 years of undergraduate study, then straight into the MD.
Dates for 2027 entry
- Graduate MMIs: held in mid-September 2026, after GEMSAS interview offers in early September.
- Provisional MMIs: scheduled for mid to late November 2026. QTAC emails the invitations.
- Rural Access Scheme evidence: school leavers send their cover sheet and documents to QTAC by 30 September.
- Your Zoom link: arrives by email before your interview. UQ's interview page says 1 to 2 weeks before, and the briefing pack says about 1 week. Check your junk folder.
How to prepare
- Know the four qualities. UQ assesses kindness and compassion, integrity, adaptability and verbal communication. Have a real example ready for each.
- Practice the 2 + 7 rhythm. Read a scenario for 2 minutes without notes, then talk for up to 7. You cannot write anything down, so practice holding a structure in your head.
- Fill the time with substance. If you run out of points, add another view, a risk or what you would do next. If you are truly done, stopping early is fine.
- Test your setup. Install and update Zoom, turn off gesture reactions, and do a test call with a movable camera and screen sharing.
Think about rural Queensland. With 28% of new domestic places set aside for rural applicants (UQ's figure) and two regional pathways, be ready to talk about rural health and the Bonded Medical Program.
Practice questions
Questions in the style of a MMI (online) station, written for applicants to The University of Queensland (Doctor of Medicine). They are practice questions, not the school's own. Open one for what a strong answer does.
You and a close friend are in the same first-year anatomy unit. During a practical exam, you see your friend reading notes hidden in their sleeve. You know they are dealing with serious family problems and need to pass to keep their scholarship. What do you do?
Show integrity and kindness together: support your friend without staying silent about the cheating.
A friend who is also applying to medicine tells you in confidence that they exaggerated their rural background to get into a rural entry pathway. They say it doesn't matter because they plan to work rurally anyway. How do you respond?
Recognize that a good goal does not excuse a false application, and that it may have taken a place from a genuine rural applicant.
You are a junior medical student in a busy emergency department. A patient who has been waiting for hours looks increasingly pale and distressed, and the nurses are all busy with a major trauma. What do you do?
Act within your role, and escalate clearly to someone qualified rather than staying quiet or trying to treat the patient yourself.
Australia has a shortage of doctors in rural and remote areas. How does a program like the Bonded Medical Program try to address this, and what else does it take for a doctor to do well and stay in a remote community?
Explain the bond simply, then go beyond it to community ties, support and training that make doctors stay.
You're applying for medicine straight from school. What makes you confident that medicine is right for you now, rather than exploring other fields at university first?
Show how you have tested your choice with real experiences, and that you have weighed the alternatives honestly.
Closing the Gap is a national commitment to health equity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. How would you make sure your own day-to-day practice as a doctor contributes to this goal?
Move from the policy to specific things you would do in a normal clinic, such as building trust, cultural safety and working with community services.
