The University of Arizona veterinary interview format

The University of Arizona College of Veterinary Medicine uses two interview stages. Its selection overview says applicants who meet its GPA and prerequisite requirements are invited to complete a supplemental assessment, a virtual interview process, within ten days. After reviewing the VMCAS application and the supplemental assessment, the college may invite applicants to an Applicant Visit Day that includes Multiple-Mini Interviews.

ItemWhat Arizona says
Stage 1Supplemental assessment: a virtual recorded interview completed within ten days of the invitation. A $75 fee plus tax applies, and missing the ten days dismisses the application
Stage 2Arizona CVM Applicant Visit Day with Multiple-Mini Interviews; up to 300 candidates are invited
What MMI scenarios assessCollege fit, motivation for pursuing veterinary medicine and other attributes needed to evaluate an applicant's interest in attending Arizona
TimelineSupplemental invitations August to November; MMIs September to December; invitations to attend sent February 20; rolling acceptance December to March; decision day April 15

What Arizona looks for

The Admissions Committee, made up of college faculty, administrators and staff, says it examines each applicant's motivation for pursuing a veterinary degree, overall understanding of the profession, leadership ability, problem-solving skills and interpersonal skills. It also says applicants should demonstrate responsibility and experience with animals outside of pet ownership. The college says its review looks at fit with its values, relevant experiences and attributes, and academic preparation.

The cycle in brief

  • Deadline: VMCAS closes September 15 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern.
  • GPA: a 3.0 minimum for cumulative, prerequisite and science GPAs to receive an automatic file review. Applicants between 2.75 and 2.99 may receive additional review.
  • Standardized tests: the college does not require or consider the GRE.
  • Weekly review: committee reviews occur weekly until all interviewed applicants have been considered.
  • Outcome: accepted, alternate list or not accepted, by email.

How to prepare for Arizona

  • Treat the ten-day window seriously. The invitation can arrive between August and November. Keep your schedule flexible so you can record within ten days.
  • Prepare for fit questions. Arizona names college fit. Learn what is distinctive about its program and be ready to say what you would contribute.
  • Prepare for motivation. The MMI scenarios address the motivation for pursuing veterinary medicine. Arizona does not say what the recorded assessment covers, so prepare a specific, evidence-based answer for both.
  • Practice both formats. A recorded answer to a camera, and timed live-style scenarios.
  • Use our guides. See our Kira Talent guide for recorded delivery and our MMI practice guide for stations.

Arizona veterinary practice questions (written by us, not Arizona)

Arizona does not publish its questions. These are ours, built from the stated themes. Answer each aloud in about three minutes.

  1. Why veterinary medicine, and why this college?
  2. Tell me about your experience with animals outside of pet ownership and what it taught you.
  3. Describe a time you led a group toward a goal.
  4. A client cannot afford the full workup for a sick animal. What do you do?
  5. You are working with a team and someone is not communicating. What is your first step?
  6. What do you know about how veterinary medicine intersects with public or environmental health?
  7. Tell me about a time you solved a problem with limited resources.
  8. How do you handle people who disagree strongly with you?
  9. What attributes do you think a veterinarian needs that are not tested by grades?
  10. Tell me about a moment that made you doubt your path and how you decided to continue.

A drill for a recorded assessment and an MMI

  1. Record three of the questions, two minutes each, with no notes.
  2. Set a ten-day deadline with yourself for a practice run so you rehearse the pace.
  3. Run four timed scenarios with a friend adding a complication halfway.
  4. Review for fit: which two features of the college can you speak to specifically?
  5. Repeat on a different day.
