Preparing for the Universidad Central del Caribe interview

UCC School of Medicine's MMI on Microsoft Teams, the bilingual rule, the December 30 deadline and what the school does and does not publish, plus practice.

Universidad Central del Caribe School of Medicine interview guide: format, timeline and practice questions

The Universidad Central del Caribe School of Medicine interview format

Universidad Central del Caribe (UCC) School of Medicine, in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, uses an MMI. The AAMC's MSAR report for the 2027 class says the interviews "are in a Multiple Mini- Interview format through the Teams platform (MMI)," that invitations go out every October (subject to change), and that the day has a professional dress code and runs a minimum of one hour. The same MSAR row answers "No" to its regional and video interview fields, so the Teams mention and the video answer do not match; go by your invitation. UCC does not publish the number or length of stations, the content of the stations or who conducts them.

The school's general admission requirements say "a personal interview is required prior to consideration for admission with members of the faculty by invitation only."

What UCC requires

The admission requirements page says all applicants file AMCAS and a secondary application ($200 fee), with a general and science GPA of 3.00, an MCAT of 494 or above taken within two years, two letters from science professors or one pre-medical committee letter, and 90 credits. Required courses include 9 semester hours of Spanish and 9 of English. The page says "students are required to be fully bilingual in Spanish and English."

What the committee weighs

The page says the Admissions Committee considers academic qualifications, personal traits and potential for success as evidenced in academic records, MCAT, personal statement, letters, personal interviews and health-related experiences. It does not publish an interview rubric.

How to prepare for the UCC interview

  • Prepare in both languages. UCC requires full bilingualism, so be ready for either language.
  • Practice MMI stations on camera. MSAR says Teams, so rehearse on video with good audio and framing.
  • Build health-related experience stories. The committee names them explicitly.
  • Dress professionally. MSAR lists a professional dress code.
  • Plan for a long session. A minimum of one hour means stamina matters.

UCC practice questions (written by us, not Universidad Central del Caribe)

UCC does not publish its stations. We wrote these around the committee factors it lists. Keep each answer to about two minutes.

  1. Why do you want to be a physician, and why in Puerto Rico?
  2. Describe a health-related experience that changed how you see medicine.
  3. A patient asks you to keep their diagnosis from their family. What do you do?
  4. You see a colleague cutting corners on a task that affects patient safety. What do you do?
  5. Tell me about a time you communicated across languages or cultures.
  6. How would you handle a disagreement with a teammate under a tight deadline?
  7. Describe a time you failed and what you learned.
  8. What is one problem facing Puerto Rico's health system, and what could you contribute?
  9. A patient is angry about a long wait. How do you respond?
  10. Why Universidad Central del Caribe?

A drill for an MMI on video

  1. Run six stations of 7 minutes on Teams with a partner reading prompts; record two.
  2. Do half in Spanish and half in English.
  3. After each, note whether you named the stakeholders and gave a clear next step.
  4. Check lighting, audio and dress.
  5. Practice for a full hour so stamina does not drop in the last stations.
