Preparing for the Baptist Health Sciences University College of Osteopathic Medicine interview
BUCOM's in-person interview in Memphis: small cohorts, what AACOM and the school say about the format, mission, 2026-27 dates and practice questions we wrote.

The BUCOM interview format
Baptist Health Sciences University College of Osteopathic Medicine (BUCOM) in Memphis says its interviews are in person. Its Admissions Pathway page lists the steps as the AACOMAS application, an invitation to a supplemental application, and then "an in-person interview" for invited candidates. Its Application Timeline page adds that interviews are hosted in small cohorts on Wednesdays or Thursdays, beginning in August. AACOM's Choose DO Explorer lists the format as Multi-Mini Interviews (MMI), in person only. BUCOM's own pages do not use the word MMI and do not publish the number of stations, the length of each one or who the interviewers are, beyond "BUCOM faculty."

What BUCOM is looking for
BUCOM's mission is "to provide an exemplary model of education that prepares physicians to integrate the art and science of healing with their faith, calling and pursuit of excellence," with a "special emphasis on primary care in underserved urban and rural areas" of Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi. Its shared values are integrity, professionalism, continuous improvement and service, which it describes as "expressions of our Christian values," and it says servant leadership is modeled in learning, teaching and service. The college's admissions policy says it seeks students committed to improving the health of the Mid-South Delta region and that preference may be given to applicants from rural or underserved backgrounds, especially from Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee and other Delta regions.
AACOM's profile says BUCOM evaluates "academic success, noncognitive traits, as well as experiences outside the classroom," and gives preference to applicants who can show the ability and desire to meet the mission and share its community values. The supplemental essays, which AACOM says screen for mission fit, are a good preview of what interviewers care about. If you are not Christian, nothing we found says you need to be, but be ready to talk honestly about service, calling and why you want to practice in a community like Memphis and the Mid-South.
Timeline for the current cycle
- AACOMAS opened May 4, 2026. AACOM lists the primary deadline as April 30, 2027. BUCOM's own timeline page lists March 1 for the last AACOMAS submission and March 15 for the supplemental, and AACOM lists the supplemental deadline as March 1, 2027. The dates differ, so apply well ahead of all of them.
- BUCOM begins inviting supplemental applications in June and starts interviewing in August. It admits on a rolling basis, so earlier applicants have more seats available.
- Requirements on BUCOM's pages: a 3.0 cumulative GPA and a 3.0 prerequisite GPA, an MCAT within three years (preferred score of 504), and prerequisites that include biology 8, biochemistry 3, inorganic chemistry 8, organic chemistry 8, physics 8, an additional lab science 4 and English 6.
- Letters: a pre-health committee letter, or three individual letters (two faculty, one supervisor). A letter from a non-family DO or MD is strongly recommended on the school's pages, and AACOM lists a physician letter as required.
- BUCOM says it accepts only U.S. citizens and permanent residents.
A young school: what to know
BUCOM opened its inaugural class in 2024 and has COCA pre-accreditation status. AACOM lists 114 first-year matriculants for 2025-26, 31 of them in-state. The college partners with Baptist Memorial Health Care, whose network includes 24 hospitals according to AACOM, and uses a blended anatomy curriculum with dissection, plastinated models and virtual imaging. If you are asked why BUCOM, strong answers name the clinical network, the Mid-South mission, the simulation and standardized-patient work, or the faith-based environment, tied to something you have actually done.
How to prepare
- Read the mission and values closely. Pick the two or three that fit you best and attach one real story to each.
- Prepare for either style. AACOM says MMI, the school says an in-person interview. Be ready to answer a timed scenario and also to talk through your own background in a conversation.
- Know why Memphis and the Mid-South. Have a specific answer, not just "an underserved area."
- Be ready for a service-centered conversation. BUCOM says servant leadership is modeled across the college. Know what you would say about service from your own experience, without reciting a definition.
- Do three timed runs. Record at least one and watch for rambling openings.
Practice questions (written by us, not BUCOM)
BUCOM does not publish its interview questions. We wrote these around its mission and values. They are for practice and do not predict what you will be asked.
- Why osteopathic medicine, and why BUCOM?
- What does it mean to integrate the art and science of healing?
- Tell me about a time you served someone without recognition. What did it teach you?
- Describe a health care challenge in the community where you grew up.
- A patient in a rural area has to drive two hours to the nearest specialist. How would you try to help?
- Tell me about a time you made a mistake in front of a team. What did you do next?
- How do you handle a patient who does not share your beliefs about health?
- A classmate shares answers on a graded assignment. What do you do?
- What does servant leadership look like when you are not in charge?
- How would you want to practice in the Mid-South in ten years?
- Describe a time you changed your mind after listening to someone else.
- What would you want us to know that is not in your application?

A 40-minute practice run
- Recruit one or two people to play interviewers and give them the list above.
- Have them run four timed scenario prompts at five minutes each, then four conversational questions with a follow-up each.
- Ask them, after each answer, what they would still want to know. Add that detail to your next round.
- Record the session. Watch two answers and check whether you gave a specific example and tied it to a value.
- Do the weakest two again the next day.

BUCOM interview FAQ
Is the BUCOM interview an MMI?
AACOM lists Multi-Mini Interviews. BUCOM's own pages describe an in-person interview and do not name the format, so prepare for both timed scenarios and conversation.
Can I interview virtually?
BUCOM's pages and AACOM say interviews are in person. An older admissions policy mentions virtual interviews, so confirm with admissions if you cannot travel.
Do I need to be Christian?
We found no religious requirement on BUCOM's admissions pages. The mission and values are framed in Christian terms, so be ready to speak honestly about service and calling.
When are interviews?
BUCOM's timeline says in-person interviews begin in August and run in small cohorts on Wednesdays or Thursdays.
Is there a supplemental application?
Yes, by invitation, with a $50 fee that is waived for applicants with an AACOMAS fee waiver.
Do I need Casper or PREview?
Neither appears on BUCOM's admissions pages or its AACOM profile.
