Preparing for the Cooper Medical School of Rowan University interview
CMSRU's relaxed 30-minute virtual interview day: schedule, 2026-27 dates, PREview, the humanism and Camden mission, and practice questions we wrote.

The Cooper Medical School of Rowan University interview format
Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU, in Camden, New Jersey) describes its interview as "a relaxed conversation and not an interrogation." Its virtual interview day page lays out the schedule: you get a personalized email about a week ahead with a link to "a virtual interview with an Admissions Committee member for one of the 30-minute time slots," and CMSRU says it can't accommodate requests for specific slots. The AAMC's MSAR interview procedures report for the 2027 entering class describes one interview with two interviewers, "one who is on the Admissions Committee and one who is blinded to application materials," on Fridays, lasting about 30 minutes.
| Item | What CMSRU and the AAMC say |
|---|---|
| Interview | One live interview of about 30 minutes; CMSRU's page names an Admissions Committee member, the AAMC entry names two interviewers, one of them blinded to your application |
| Virtual or in person | Virtual for 2026-27 |
| Slots | 10:20 to 10:50, 11:05 to 11:35 or 11:50 to 12:20 Eastern; you can't request a slot |
| Rest of the day | Sign-in 8:45 a.m., welcome and live program 9:00 to 10:00 with the Dean and admissions leaders, an interactive Q&A with the Assistant Dean of Admissions, a student-hosted meet and greet and affinity group discussions |
| Tone | "Meant to be a relaxed conversation"; the AAMC adds casual meet-and-greet time with current students |
What CMSRU doesn't publish: sample questions or a scoring rubric. Its FAQ says: "Our best recommendation for your interview is, simply, to be yourself," and "Expect to have a relaxed conversation with your interviewers about your application and your experiences." It also says you were invited "because we feel you are academically ready for medical school and that your experiences resonate with our mission."
CMSRU's process and 2026-27 timeline
- Application: through AMCAS, with an MCAT taken between January 2023 and September 2026. CMSRU "highly recommends" the AAMC PREview exam.
- Secondary: sent selectively after screening, $100, with short mission-based written responses. A second, mission-based review decides who is invited to interview.
- Early Decision: AMCAS by August 1, secondary by August 15, with a GPA of at least 3.5, science GPA of 3.6 and an MCAT of 507. Early decision applicants are notified by September 30.
- Regular: AMCAS by November 15, secondary and letters by December 15. Interviews run August to March, and offers begin October 15 and continue on a rolling basis.
- After the interview: you are presented to the full Admissions Committee in the week following. After October 15, CMSRU says you'll generally hear within one week of your interview.
- Letters: at least three through AMCAS, at least two from academic faculty. A pre-health committee letter is preferred.
What CMSRU looks for
CMSRU says "every aspect" of the school comes from its mission, and the Why CMSRU page names two themes: a humanistic education in the art and science of medicine and engagement with Camden, a city "where many residents face daily challenges in obtaining access to basic needs, education and healthcare." Service learning is a required part of the curriculum, and students provide care at the student-run Cooper Rowan Clinic from the fifth week of the first year. The school describes service learning as "meaningful reflection" that gives insight into the social determinants of health.
The Viner Center for Humanism says it promotes "empathy, respect, integrity, altruism, and the pursuit of excellence." The curriculum features active learning groups, small-group sessions meant to develop "communication, leadership and teamwork skills," and an accelerated three-year primary care track (PC3), which accepted students can apply for.
How to prepare for CMSRU's interview
- Prepare for a conversation, not a drill. Don't memorize speeches. Know your application well enough that a follow-up on any experience feels natural.
- Be ready to talk about Camden. You don't need to be from New Jersey, but be concrete about what draws you to learning in a city with real access challenges.
- Prepare a humanism story. Have an example of empathy and one of integrity that cost you something, told with your own actions.
- Plan for the Q&A. The Assistant Dean's session is a chance to ask good questions about the curriculum, the clinic or service learning. Write three.
- Prepare for one or two interviewers. Sources differ on whether a second, blinded interviewer is present, so be ready to speak to both without assuming either has your file.
- Use your slot well. You can't choose the time, so set up your camera, light and sound for the morning ahead and treat the live program as part of the day.
CMSRU practice questions (written by us, not CMSRU)
CMSRU doesn't publish its interview questions. These are ours, shaped around the school's mission and the conversational format. Practice each aloud for about two minutes.
- Tell me about yourself and how you came to medicine.
- What draws you to a medical school in Camden?
- Tell me about a time you learned something about a community by listening to the people in it.
- What does humanism in medicine mean to you, and where have you seen it done well?
- Describe a time you showed empathy toward someone when it was hard to.
- Tell me about an experience from your application that you'd like to talk about more.
- What do you think the social determinants of health mean for a patient who keeps missing appointments?
- Tell me about a time you worked through a disagreement in a group.
- Why might a three-year primary care track or a four-year track suit you?
- What question about CMSRU would you ask a current student?

A drill for the CMSRU interview
- Pick four prompts: your story, Camden, a humanism example and an experience you want to expand on.
- Answer each in two minutes on camera, in the setup you'll use on the day.
- Ask a partner to interrupt naturally with follow-ups, as a conversation would, not a quiz.
- Watch the recording with the sound off. Check that you look warm, not rehearsed.
- Write three questions for the Q&A session and one for a student.
If you don't have a practice partner, Confetto's AI mock interviews ask follow-up questions based on what you actually said and give rubric-based feedback afterward. The question bank has over 500 questions, and you can start with a 7-day free trial.
