SUNY Downstate College of Medicine interview guide: format, timeline and practice questions

The SUNY Downstate College of Medicine interview format

SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University College of Medicine, in Brooklyn, describes a one-on-one interview day. The AAMC's MSAR interview procedures report for the 2027 entering class says interviews are "one-on-one, one hour in length with a faculty, and a 20-minute peer-to-peer conversation with a medical student." The typical day is an hour with a faculty member plus an informational session, a campus tour or virtual chat, and/or lunch with currently enrolled students. Interviews are by invitation only, and details come in your invitation email.

Downstate's application review page says interviews are scheduled "beginning after Labor Day," conducted virtually "into the first half of the spring semester," and scheduled Monday through Thursday. It adds virtual chat sessions with current medical students as part of the interview day.

Downstate doesn't publish whether the faculty interview is open or closed file or how the peer conversation is used. It does say the peer-to-peer conversation exists, so treat it as part of the day, not a break from it.

Downstate's timeline for 2026-27

  • AMCAS: the AMCAS page recommends submitting before September 1, and the application procedures page encourages a complete file before October 1.
  • Complete-file deadline: noon on January 4, 2027, for the Fall 2027 class. Incomplete applications aren't reviewed after that date.
  • Secondary: required before your AMCAS application can be reviewed, with a $100 fee or an AMCAS fee waiver.
  • Decisions: Downstate's review page says it begins issuing decisions in mid-February 2027 (the application procedures page says early February, so expect it around then). Its FAQ says to expect a status update 8 to 12 weeks after your interview, longer over the holidays, and that applicants interviewed from mid-January to April should expect a decision in late spring.
  • Hold vs. alternate list: the FAQ says a post-interview "hold" isn't the alternate list. Alternate-list placement is decided in April.

We didn't find Casper or PREview requirements on Downstate's admissions pages. Letters can be a premedical committee letter or packet, or no more than two individual letters, one from a science professor.

What Downstate says it values

Downstate's mission includes "to care for and improve the lives of our globally diverse communities" and "to foster an environment that embraces cultural diversity." Its values are pride, professionalism, respect, innovation, diversity and excellence, and it calls itself "Brooklyn's Academic Medical Center." The interview page doesn't list a competency set, so use the mission as your guide: be ready to talk about serving a diverse urban population and to give examples of respect and professionalism.

How to prepare for an hour with faculty and a short peer conversation

  • Prepare a Brooklyn-specific "Why Downstate?" The mission names diverse communities. Connect it to something you have done with a community like that.
  • Plan for two different registers. The faculty hour is the longer conversation; the 20-minute conversation with a student is a peer chat where your curiosity about student life matters.
  • Prepare questions for the student. Ask about the curriculum, schedule, support and the borough, not what you could read on the website.
  • Be ready to explain your file. Downstate's FAQ describes requesting fall grade reports and holding some applications for spring review, so be ready to talk about recent grades and any gaps.
  • Test the video setup. If your day is virtual, check the platform link, audio and lighting the day before.

Downstate practice questions (written by us, not Downstate)

Downstate doesn't publish its questions. We wrote these around its mission and the format it describes. Keep most answers to two minutes.

  1. Tell me about yourself and why medicine.
  2. Why do you want to train at Downstate and in Brooklyn?
  3. Describe a time you worked with people from a community very different from your own.
  4. What does respect for a patient look like when you disagree with their choice?
  5. Tell me about a time you showed professionalism under pressure.
  6. What is the biggest challenge facing an urban academic medical center, and how would you contribute?
  7. Tell me about an experience that changed how you think about health inequity.
  8. What would you like to ask a current student about life here?
  9. Describe a time you were wrong and what you did next.
  10. What is something in your application you'd like me to understand better?

A drill for a one-hour interview plus a peer chat

  1. Run a full 60 minutes with a partner as the faculty interviewer. Cover your story, your service, a challenge, a "why Downstate" answer and your questions.
  2. Take a five-minute break, then run a relaxed 20-minute peer conversation where you ask most of the questions.
  3. Record both. Compare your tone: the faculty hour should be structured and the peer chat should sound curious.
  4. Find one answer that ran past three minutes and cut it to two.
  5. Prepare a calm two-sentence explanation for any grade or timing issue on your file.

If you don't have a practice partner, Confetto's AI mock interviews ask follow-up questions based on what you actually said and give rubric-based feedback afterward. The question bank has over 500 questions, and you can start with a 7-day free trial.
