The Baylor College of Medicine PA program interview format

The Master of Science Physician Assistant Program at Baylor College of Medicine, in Houston, uses individual faculty interviews rather than stations. Its application process page says the 2026 interviews are virtual. The first day is an afternoon-long orientation with student and faculty break-out sessions and student panels. The second day is a series of individual interviews with three faculty members who teach in the didactic and clinical parts of the program.

What Baylor's interviewers score

Baylor is unusually specific here. The application page says interviewers rate candidates on these criteria, and each interviewer scores you; the combined scores make an Interview Index:

  • Critical thinking and insight
  • Capacity to succeed
  • Self-awareness and maturity
  • Oral communication skills
  • Compassion and empathy
  • Teamwork
  • Humility
  • Role awareness
  • Professionalism
  • Unique attributes

The whole admissions process has four stages. A pre-screen checks that the application is complete and meets minimum GPAs. Faculty then rank applicants on academic preparedness, written communication, character development, motivation, commitment and personal attributes, which produces a Screening Index. Interviews produce the Interview Index. The admissions committee meets the week after interviews and assigns a Decision Index. Within two weeks of the interviews, the top 40 are offered admission by phone, and the other interviewed applicants are told their general rank and may stay on a wait list by email.

What is distinctive about Baylor

  • It is not rolling. Baylor's FAQ says applications are screened, and invitations extended, at the same time each year regardless of when you applied. The deadline for the 2026-27 cycle is August 1 (CASPA verified, with all materials and fees).
  • No required patient care or shadowing hours. The FAQ says there are none, though experience is evaluated if you have it. Baylor's FAQ says the narrative components and letters take on greater significance because they decide who gets an interview.
  • Minimums: a 3.2 overall and science GPA. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
  • Small class: the FAQ says over 1,500 applications are received, 150 interviewed and 40 admitted; the maximum entering class is 40.

Once you are in, the program describes a master's paper project that runs from the middle of the didactic phase to just before graduation, a 12-hour service learning requirement, and training in the Texas Medical Center with students from other health professions. These make good "why Baylor" material.

How to prepare for Baylor

  • Map your stories to the ten criteria. Write one real example for each, especially humility, role awareness and self-awareness. Those are easy to overlook.
  • Prepare for three conversations that repeat. Because you meet three faculty members, you will probably be asked similar things more than once. Keep the facts consistent and vary the examples.
  • Be ready for a 30-minute pace. This is longer than a station. Give a short answer, then expect a follow-up.
  • Know your narrative. Baylor says faculty look for consistency between your grades, your letters and your written narratives. Reread what you wrote and be ready to expand on it.
  • Take the virtual setup seriously. Test your camera, sound and background before the first day.

Baylor PA practice questions (written by us, not Baylor)

Baylor does not publish its questions. These are ours, built from the ten scored criteria. Practice each aloud for about three minutes.

  1. Why a PA, and what do you think distinguishes the role from other health professions?
  2. Tell me about a time you realized you were wrong about something important. What did you do?
  3. What is a limit of your current knowledge that worries you about becoming a clinician?
  4. Describe a patient or client who challenged your compassion. How did you respond?
  5. A PA is part of a team that includes physicians, nurses and pharmacists. Give an example of when you worked well in a team that was not your own profession.
  6. Walk me through how you decide whether to speak up when you disagree with someone more senior.
  7. What is one thing about your application that you think we should understand better?
  8. How will you manage a very fast didactic year when you are not used to this pace?
  9. A patient does not follow your advice and returns worse. What do you say?
  10. Why Baylor, and what part of the program is most important to you?

A drill for three faculty interviews

  1. Write a one-page list of the ten criteria with one example for each. Put the example's result in one sentence.
  2. Have a friend interview you for 30 minutes without breaks, using the questions above plus two follow-ups from your own application.
  3. Repeat with a different friend and a new order. Notice whether your facts stay the same.
  4. Finish by asking the interviewer two real questions about the program, not the website.

If you do not have partners, Confetto's PA school interview prep uses AI mock interviews that ask follow-up questions based on what you actually said and give rubric-based feedback afterward. The question bank has over 500 questions, and you can start with a 7-day free trial.
