What happens on the interview day

The interview is a full day on campus. Bryant calls it your chance to show both your interest in becoming a PA and why you fit Bryant.

  • Program overview. Program leadership gives an overview of the program.
  • Student Q&A. Current PA students answer questions about student life at Bryant.
  • Campus tour. Part of every interview day.
  • Writing activity. A written task on the day. Bryant does not publish the prompt or the time allowed.
  • One-on-one interviews. With members of the Admissions Committee, including program faculty and alumni.

Prepare properly. Bryant's own words are that students should thoroughly prepare for this interview.

How offers are decided

The final class is chosen by holistic review of everyone interviewed, using both the CASPA review and the interview.

  • Mission alignment. Interviewers look for alignment with the program's mission, vision and goals, and stronger alignment earns stronger preference.
  • Three weeks. You get an email about your status within three weeks of your interview.
  • One week to accept. A non-refundable $1,500 deposit holds your seat and goes toward first-term tuition.
  • No deferrals. Bryant does not offer deferred admission, transfers from other PA programs or advanced placement.

How you get an interview

Bryant reviews applications holistically and ranks them. Preference goes to higher GPAs, more patient care hours, strong letters, well-written essays and experience that fits the mission.

  • 2,000 hours of direct patient care. Complete and verified when you submit, and documented on the supplemental application. Bryant gives stronger preference above 2,000 hours and to roles with clinical decision making.
  • GPA of 3.0 or more. Overall, prerequisite and BCP (biology, chemistry and physics). Each extra GPA point adds preference.
  • PA shadowing. Stronger preference if you shadowed PAs in 3 or more specialties or for more than 30 hours in total.
  • Supplemental essays. Inside CASPA, with a $75 fee. Bryant scores them with your CASPA essay.
  • GRE optional. Strongly encouraged but not required, with no minimum. Scores must be from the last five years (CASPA code 8825).
  • Other qualities. Leadership, volunteer work, varied life experience, overcoming adversity and aptitude for inquiry-based learning.

The mission counts

Bryant's mission is to improve universal access to health care. Files and interviews are scored with points for any applicant who shows commitment to that mission, though the program gives no preference to any group.

Bryant undergraduates

Two seats in each cohort are reserved for qualified Bryant undergraduates. Those who meet the minimums get a one-time offer to interview, and admission still depends on a successful in-person interview.

Dates and other details

Bryant fills seats on a rolling basis and accepts nothing new after you submit CASPA, except proof of your degree or one final course.

The program

A year-round, 27-month Master of Science in PA Studies with five classroom terms and 10 clinical rotations. Anatomy is taught at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University in Providence.

How to prepare

Bryant scores you on mission fit, so read its mission and goals and tie your stories to access to care.

  • Know the mission. Be ready to explain, with an example, how you have helped someone get care they might not have reached.
  • Practice writing on the spot. Time yourself writing a short, clear response to a prompt, since the day includes a writing activity.
  • Talk about your 2,000 hours. Pick two or three patients from your work and say what each taught you about the PA role.
  • Use the student Q&A. Ask current students real questions. It helps you decide, and it shows genuine interest.

Know your shadowing. Bryant values shadowing PAs across specialties. Be ready to compare what you saw in each.

Practice questions

Questions in the style of a One-on-one interviews and writing activity station, written for applicants to Bryant University, Physician Assistant Program. They are practice questions, not the school's own. Open one for what a strong answer does.

You are a PA, and a patient refuses to let you do their intake, saying they only want to see 'a real doctor.' The physician won't be available for another hour, and the patient's vital signs are borderline unstable. How do you handle it?

Respect the patient's wish, explain the risk of waiting, and get help quickly.

Your supervising physician suggests a treatment plan that doesn't match current clinical guidelines you've just studied, though it isn't dangerous. How would you approach that difference?

Raise it privately and with curiosity, and bring the evidence.

You are a PA in a surgical practice. Your supervising physician routinely skips hand hygiene before entering patient rooms when they're in a hurry. You're about to walk into a room together. Address the issue.

Speak up before you enter, briefly and respectfully, because patient safety comes first.

You are a PA student on a geriatrics rotation. An elderly patient says 'Thank you, doctor' every time you do something. You've corrected them twice, and they wave it off and say, 'Same thing.' What do you do now?

Respect the patient while making sure they know who is caring for them.

You are a PA. Your supervising physician has just told you to rush through your remaining patient visits because they want to close the clinic early on a Friday. Have the conversation.

Stay respectful, name the risk to patients, and offer a practical middle path.

Tell me about a time you witnessed or were part of an ethical dilemma during your healthcare experience. What made it difficult, and how was it resolved?

Pick a real dilemma with two good values in conflict, and say what you learned.
