What happens on the interview day

Wichita State holds two interview days in November, and you meet two people on yours.

  • Two interviewers. Each candidate interviews with a member of the faculty and a PA alumnus.
  • A traditional interview. PAEA's directory lists a traditional interview and an onsite visit. Wichita State does not publish the length or the questions.
  • What they assess. Your academic potential, health care experience, leadership, community service, professionalism, commitment to serving diverse populations, motivation for the PA profession, and how you communicate.
  • Technical standards. The program also uses the interview to judge traits like maturity, adaptability, accountability and respectful communication.

Two different listeners. A faculty member may probe how you will handle the coursework. An alumnus may ask what you really know about PA work. Prepare for both.

How offers are decided

From about 145 interviewed candidates, Wichita State offers 48 seats. Attending the interview does not guarantee admission.

  • What weighs most. Academic potential, knowledge of the health care system, motivation, maturity, self-assurance and good people skills weigh strongly.
  • Service counts. The program seeks applicants who served their communities or country through volunteering, military service, jobs or service programs.
  • Timing. Interviewed candidates hear by email as early as 10 days after the interview and no later than early January.
  • Deposit and waitlist. You confirm a seat with a $1,000 nonrefundable deposit. If someone withdraws, the seat goes to the highest-ranked candidate on the waitlist.

Who got in

PAEA's directory lists an average overall GPA and science GPA of 3.7 for Wichita State's matriculants.

How you get an interview

Wichita State does not use rolling admissions. It screens every application after the September 1 deadline and sends all interview invitations at the same time.

  • Three applications. A verified CASPA application and a Graduate School application, both by September 1, plus a $75 supplemental application due 10 days after the program emails you the link.
  • Grades. A 3.00 overall GPA and a 3.00 science GPA, as CASPA calculates them. Core science prerequisites must be graded on your transcript when you apply.
  • Experience. Patient care and shadowing are not required, but Wichita State says direct patient care is strongly preferred and shadowing is expected.
  • Three letters. Ideally from people who worked with you in health care or from professors. Not from family.
  • Mission fit. The program recruits from Kansas and geographically underserved regions and from different socioeconomic backgrounds. It also values bilingual applicants.

Dates and other details

Wichita State has posted the months but not the exact interview days.

Dates for 2027 entry

  • September 1, 2026. Deadline for a verified CASPA application, three letters and the Graduate School application. This has passed.
  • November 2026. Two interview days. The exact dates are not published.
  • Early January 2027. The latest that interviewed candidates hear a decision.
  • June 2027. The class of 48 starts.
  • 2028 entry. Wichita State hasn't posted dates for the next cycle. PAEA says each CASPA cycle opens on the last Thursday in April, and Wichita State's deadline has been September 1.

The program

The 26-month program has about 14 months in the classroom and 12 months of clinical rotations. Students complete nine rotations, and at least two are in rural or underserved communities.

Wichita State says its PA program is the first and longest-running in Kansas.

How to prepare

A traditional interview rewards clear, honest stories about your own experience, so practice telling them out loud.

  • Know why Kansas. The program says it responds to Kansas's need for health care and encourages care for rural and underserved people. Have a real reason this mission fits you.
  • Know the PA role. Knowledge of the health care system weighs strongly. Be ready to explain how PAs work in a team with physicians.
  • Bring service stories. Leadership and community service are assessed, so prepare one or two examples with what you did and what changed.
  • Practice short answers. Aim for answers of one to two minutes, then stop and let the interviewer follow up.

Show self-assurance, not polish. Maturity and self-assurance count. A calm pause before you answer reads better than a rushed, memorized reply.

Practice questions

Questions in the style of a Traditional interview (in person) station, written for applicants to Wichita State University, Physician Associate Program. They are practice questions, not the school's own. Open one for what a strong answer does.

PAs are trained as generalists and can move between specialties during their career. Why does that flexibility matter to you specifically?

Tie the flexibility to the patients you could serve, such as a rural town that needs a generalist, not to restlessness.

Tell me about a time you witnessed or were part of an ethical dilemma during your health care experience. What made it difficult, and how was it resolved?

Pick a case with two good values in conflict, then explain how you weighed them.

Why is it important for a PA to know the limits of their medical knowledge, and how will you recognize when you've reached your own?

Describe a concrete warning sign you would notice in yourself and exactly who you would call.

Tell me about a time in your patient care experience when you felt a patient wasn't being completely honest with you or the team. How did you handle it?

Focus on finding out why the patient held back, not on catching them out.

If an undergraduate asked you for advice on choosing between the MD route and the PA route, what's the single biggest misconception you'd warn them about?

Correct one myth fairly, without putting down either path, and link it to why you chose PA.

You are a PA in a busy urgent care. A father holding his crying toddler says he wants a real doctor to stitch his son's forehead, not an assistant. How do you respond?

Stay calm, explain your role in one plain sentence and respect his choice while keeping the child's care moving.
