Butler PA Program Interview (MMI): Format, Dates and Who Gets In
What happens at the Butler University PA interview, how you get one, and how it decides your offer.
Butler interviews selected applicants on campus through a series of stations that are task-based or interview-based, listed in PAEA as a multiple mini interview (MMI). Faculty, staff, alumni, preceptors and community PAs score each station, and candidates are ranked on their total score. Interviews run in the fall, and conditional offers follow from October to November.

What happens on the interview day
Invited candidates come to campus and have several interactions. Most of the day is a series of short stations.
- Task or interview stations. Stations are generally either a task or an interview. PAEA lists the format as an MMI.
- Many evaluators. Faculty, staff, alumni, active preceptors and community-based PAs evaluate you.
- What stations test. The characteristics you need to succeed in the program, and how well you have discerned that PA is the right career.
Every station counts. Your rank is the total of all station scores, so reset after a hard station and treat the next one as a fresh start.
How offers are decided
The PA Program Admission Committee decides after the interviews, using your rank from the station scores.
- Conditional offers. Sent from October to November, generally by email.
- A deposit holds your seat. It is non-refundable and goes toward tuition. PAEA lists it as $1,000.
- A varied class. Butler selects students from varied social, economic, ethnic, educational and health care backgrounds.
- No in-state preference. Butler is private, and tuition is the same for every state.
How you get an interview
Butler reviews every complete application that meets its requirements after the July 15 deadline. There is no rolling admission.
- GPA of 3.2 or more. Overall, at application and at matriculation. The class that entered in 2025 averaged 3.75. Reviewers may also look at your CASPA BCP GPA.
- Leadership, service or scholarship. The committee looks for excellence in at least one of these, plus strong written communication.
- No minimum hours. Butler requires no health care experience and has no preferred type. It wants candidates who have truly discerned that PA is the career they want.
- Up to three courses outstanding. Only one of them may be a chemistry or biology course. All must be done before you start.
Two pathways
Both pathways use the same two steps: application review, then on-campus interviews.
- Standard pathway. For everyone else. Butler generally admits 60% of each class this way.
- Selective internal pathway. For Butler students and alumni who will hold a Butler bachelor's degree. 40% of each class is reserved for them.
- One military seat. One seat is reserved for a veteran or active military member who meets the minimums and interviews. Say you want to be considered when you submit CASPA.

How to prepare
Butler's stations test discernment, so every answer should show you know what PA work really involves.
- Practice both station types. Mix interview questions with short tasks, like role plays or problems you talk through, under a timer.
- Show your discernment. Butler doesn't require hours, so explain how you tested your choice, through work, shadowing or conversations with PAs.
- Talk to a range of people. Your evaluators include alumni, preceptors and community PAs. Speak to each as a future colleague.
- Know primary care. Butler's mission is a strong foundation in primary care. Be ready to say why that matters to you.
Submit early. Butler reviews everyone after July 15, but early CASPA submission avoids verification delays near the deadline.
Practice questions
Questions in the style of a MMI (on campus) station, written for applicants to Butler University, Physician Assistant Program. They are practice questions, not the school's own. Open one for what a strong answer does.
You are a PA in a busy urgent care. A father holding his crying toddler says, 'I brought my son in for a cut on his forehead, and I want a real doctor to do the stitches, not an assistant.' Respond to the father.
Speak to the father directly and calmly, respect his choice, and keep the child's care moving.
You are a PA student. Another student on your rotation keeps jumping in to answer every question the preceptor asks, so you never get a chance to participate. Talk to your classmate.
Stay friendly, describe the effect on you, and suggest a fair way to share.
If an undergraduate asked you for advice on choosing between the MD route and the PA route, what's the single biggest misconception you'd warn them about, based on your own journey?
Name one misconception and show how you worked out the truth yourself.
You are a PA. A close friend visiting from out of town forgot their asthma inhaler and asks you to quickly call in a refill so they don't have to go to urgent care. Respond to your friend.
Stay warm but hold the boundary, and help your friend get care the right way.
Why is it important for a PA to know the limits of their medical knowledge, and how will you recognize when you've reached your own?
Give concrete signals you would watch for and what you would do next.
You are a PA. A senior nurse just yelled at you in the hallway because you forgot to sign a required form, which delayed a patient's transfer. Approach the nurse and resolve the conflict.
Own your part first, then agree on how to stop it happening again.
