USC Keck School of Medicine PA Program interview guide: format, timeline and practice questions

The USC Keck PA program interview format

The Physician Assistant Program at the Keck School of Medicine of USC, which awards the Master of Physician Assistant Practice and calls itself a primary care PA program, says only a portion of applicants are invited to interview, and invitations come after a careful review of each application. Its selection criteria page says applicants are interviewed by PA program faculty, alumni and current students. Beyond that, the details are thin, so this guide says plainly what is not published.

USC does not say how many interviewers you meet or how long each conversation lasts. The program also says its faculty cannot answer emails or phone calls from prospective applicants because of volume, so go by your invitation and the program's FAQ.

What USC looks for

USC's mission is to foster compassionate PAs who advance health equity through primary care, service, advocacy and clinical excellence, and to educate leaders who work in medically underserved communities. Its selection template awards points across categories, and one of them is "mission," which lists disadvantaged background, veteran status, humanitarian service, underserved experience and non-health-care community or volunteer service and commitment. The committee also evaluates academic background, type and extent of clinical experience, community service, understanding of the PA's role and personal and professional attributes, including knowledge of and sensitivity to multicultural issues in care.

The selection page lists the average profile of interviewees from the 2022-2023 cycle: a 3.50 cumulative GPA, a 3.41 science GPA, about 4,119 hours of paid or unpaid health care experience and about 1,371 hours of non-health-care community, volunteer or underserved service. It adds that exceeding the average does not guarantee admission.

The cycle and requirements

  • Deadline: for the 2026-27 cycle, your CASPA application, the USC supplemental application and its fee were due by September 1 (11:59 p.m. Eastern). USC reviews them as they arrive.
  • Patient care hours: starting with the 2027-2028 cycle, at least 1,000 hours are required. From 2026-2027, several roles no longer count toward patient care experience, including community health worker, health educator, patient escort, lifeguard and pharmacy technician.
  • Shadowing: strongly preferred. USC says there are no minimum required hours.
  • GPA: an expected minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0.
  • Prerequisites: all with a grade of B minus or better, including one year of beginning Spanish.
  • Alternates: if you are on the alternate list, USC says you can be admitted as late as August.

What the program is like

The program's program highlights list courses in practicing medicine in Spanish-speaking neighborhoods, a day of service for faculty, staff and students at orientation, and an advocacy training trip to Washington, DC each spring. Those details tell you what interviewers may care about: language, service and speaking up for patients.

How to prepare for USC

  • Lead with service and underserved care. The mission and the points category reward them. Have two specific, sustained examples, not a list.
  • Be honest about language. If you speak Spanish or another language, be ready to describe how you used it with patients. If not, describe what you have done to communicate across language barriers.
  • Prepare for either format. Since the day can be in person or virtual, practice on camera and with a live person.
  • Prepare for faculty, alumni and students. A current student may be looking for a good classmate. Alumni may ask about practice realities.
  • Know your hours. If your experience is in a role the program no longer counts, be ready to describe the direct patient care it involved.

USC PA practice questions (written by us, not USC)

USC does not publish its interview questions. These are ours, built from the mission and the PA role. Practice each aloud for about two minutes.

  1. Why a PA, and why primary care?
  2. Tell me about a time you worked with a community that was underserved. What did you learn that surprised you?
  3. What does health equity mean to you, and what can a PA do about it in one visit?
  4. A patient does not share your language and an interpreter is not available. What do you do?
  5. Describe a time you advocated for someone who could not advocate for themselves.
  6. You are a PA in a busy primary care clinic and a patient needs more time than the schedule allows. How do you decide?
  7. Tell me about a team you were on that failed. What was your role?
  8. How will you handle being the youngest or least experienced person on a clinical team?
  9. Tell me about one hour of your patient care experience that you remember clearly. What happened?
  10. What will you do after graduating, and how does that connect to our mission?

A drill for an unknown format

  1. Write two service stories in four sentences each: the people, what you did, what changed, what you would do now.
  2. Practice each with a friend, then with a second friend who plays a skeptical alumnus.
  3. Run one answer in Spanish or in plain English with no jargon, whichever applies to you.
  4. Do a 20-minute session with five questions from the list and one follow-up per answer.
  5. Repeat with new questions two days later.

If you do not have partners, Confetto's PA school interview prep uses AI mock interviews that ask follow-up questions based on what you actually said and give rubric-based feedback afterward. The question bank has over 500 questions, and you can start with a 7-day free trial.
