What happens on the interview day

MUSC says interviews are in person and, because of the nature of its interview process, it does not offer alternate dates.

  • In person. Interviews are held in person, typically between September and November.
  • No alternate dates. If you cannot make your date, MUSC will not offer another one.
  • Details come later. If you are selected, MUSC tells you about the interview process as the dates approach.
  • Format types. In the PAEA directory, MUSC lists traditional, group and MMI interviews. It does not publish how many stations there are, how long they last or who interviews you.
  • Your statement is read now. Personal statements are reviewed holistically for applicants invited to interview.

Prepare for all three formats. Practice a one-on-one conversation, a short group task and timed scenario stations, since MUSC lists all three.

How offers are decided

MUSC uses a holistic review of each applicant. Its timeline lists admission offers from November to December.

  • Three outcomes. Acceptance, waitlist or denial letters.
  • $500 matriculation fee. Due when you accept your offer.
  • Conditional offers. If you still have prerequisites to finish, you must earn a C or better and meet the GPA minimums, or you lose the seat.

How you get an interview

MUSC ranks applicants for interview invitations with a score built from CASPA. Each 'yes' in a category earns one point.

The points

  • Background. First generation to attend college, a family on public assistance, a family home in a shortage or medically underserved area, a veteran with honorable discharge, and English not your primary language.
  • Experience. A master's degree, and over 1,000 patient care hours.
  • GPA. One point each for an overall undergraduate GPA of 3.2, 3.4, 3.6, 3.8 and 4.0, and the same again for science GPA.
  • South Carolina ties. Being a South Carolina resident, parents living in South Carolina, and a South Carolina high school.
  • Minus one. A reference marked 'Do Not Recommend' takes one point off your total.

The minimums

  • GPA of 3.0 or more. Cumulative, with no grade forgiveness. Every repeated course counts.
  • 34 hours of prerequisites. At least 30 done by the deadline, each with a C or better, within 10 years. There are no waivers or exceptions.
  • Three references. Ideally from a health care provider, a science professor or someone who has seen you with patients. Personal references are not accepted.
  • Your own statement. AI-generated personal statements are not accepted, in part or in whole.
  • What counts as patient care. Direct patient care means actually providing care. MUSC warns that some hands-on work may still not qualify.

Dates and other details

MUSC needs both CASPA and its own supplemental application complete by one deadline.

Dates for 2027 entry

  • July 1, 2026. The MUSC supplemental application opens. The fee is $80.
  • September 1, 2026. Everything must be received and verified, including CASPA and the MUSC supplemental.
  • September to November 2026. In-person interviews.
  • November to December 2026. Admission offers.
  • End of May 2027. The program begins.

Applying for 2028 instead

For summer 2028 entry, MUSC lists CASPA opening April 30, 2027, its own application opening July 1, 2027, and a final deadline of September 1, 2027.

The program

The program lasts seven semesters: 15 months of classes on campus, then nine clinical rotations, many in South Carolina. Its goal is to prepare competent, compassionate and culturally responsive PAs for the primary care needs of South Carolina and beyond.

How to prepare

Since MUSC lists several interview types, practice a range of formats and keep your examples ready.

  • Practice group work. In a group task, share ideas, invite others in and help the group finish on time.
  • Practice short scenarios. Answer ethics and teamwork prompts in a few minutes each, then reset for the next one.
  • Connect to South Carolina. MUSC's mission names the primary care needs of South Carolina. If you have ties to the state or to underserved care, be ready to talk about them.
  • Plan your travel early. There are no alternate dates, so book travel and time off as soon as you are invited.

Show cultural humility. MUSC's goals mention cultural humility. Have a story about learning from a patient whose background differs from yours.

Practice questions

Questions in the style of a In person (traditional, group, MMI) station, written for applicants to Medical University of South Carolina, MS in Physician Assistant Studies (Residential). They are practice questions, not the school's own. Open one for what a strong answer does.

In this group task, your group gets a list of five patients waiting in an emergency department, each with a different complaint. You have eight minutes to agree on the order in which to see them. How would you approach it?

Share your reasoning out loud, invite others in, and help the group land on one order before time runs out.

You are a PA in a surgical practice. Your supervising physician routinely skips hand hygiene before entering patient rooms when they're in a hurry. You're about to walk into a room together. Address it.

Speak up in the moment, keep it about patient safety, and stay respectful.

You are a PA. A senior nurse just yelled at you in the hallway because you forgot to sign a required form, which delayed a patient's transfer. Approach the nurse and resolve the conflict.

Own your part first, stay calm, and agree on a way to stop it happening again.

You are a PA. A close friend visiting from out of town forgot their asthma inhaler and asks you to quickly call in a refill so they don't have to go to urgent care. Respond to your friend.

Say no kindly, explain the boundary, and help them get safe care another way.

You're a PA student on rotation, and a patient asks you what you think their rash is. You're fairly sure it's eczema, but you haven't discussed it with your preceptor yet. How do you answer?

Be honest that you are a student, avoid guessing, and promise a clear answer after you check with your preceptor.

You're a PA in a busy clinic, and you notice the medical assistants consistently take longer to room patients for you than for the other PAs, so your schedule keeps backing up. How do you address this?

Get curious before you complain, talk with the team directly, and look for a fix that works for everyone.

MUSC's own page does not describe the format. In the PAEA directory, MUSC lists traditional, group and multiple mini interview (MMI) types.

How does MUSC decide who gets a PA interview?
