USF Health Morsani College of Medicine interview guide: format, timeline and practice questions

The USF Health Morsani College of Medicine interview format

USF Health Morsani College of Medicine (MCOM) in Tampa holds its MD interviews online only. Its interview page says "Interviews are ONLY held remotely via Microsoft Teams." The AAMC's MSAR interview procedures report for the 2027 entering class adds the format: "a semi-open file interview." It says the interview day "will consist of the interview only," and that interviewees are invited afterward to online sessions about the curriculum, to meet current students, and to interact with faculty and staff.

ItemWhat USF and the AAMC say
FormatA semi-open file interview (MSAR)
Virtual or in personRemote only, on Microsoft Teams
Interview dayThe interview only; separate online sessions afterward (MSAR)
InvitationsMSAR lists July 24, 2026; USF's timeline says August through March
Interview season endsApril, per USF's timeline
Regional interviewsNot addressed in the report

USF doesn't publish how many interviewers you will meet, how long the interview lasts, or what "semi-open" includes. The MSAR entry uses the phrase "semi-open file" without defining it, so don't assume what your interviewer has seen. Be ready to explain your own activities from scratch.

USF's timeline

From USF's admissions timeline and application process pages:

  • Early Decision: AMCAS by August 3 and secondary materials by August 31 on the timeline page (the Early Decision page says August 31 for the AMCAS application and transcripts), with decisions by October 1. The Early Decision page sets minimums of a 518 MCAT and a 3.8 overall and science GPA.
  • Regular cycle: AMCAS by January 15, 2027, and all secondary materials by January 31, 2027. The secondary carries a $30 fee.
  • Interviews: applications are reviewed August through March for possible interview invitation, and USF says interviews conclude in April.
  • Offers: rolling, from mid-October to May.

USF says it has no minimum GPA or MCAT. It also says it does not accept application updates unless the admissions office or your interviewer asks for them. We didn't find Casper or PREview requirements on USF's MD admissions pages.

What USF says it is looking for

USF's selection criteria list personal attributes and achievements, academic record, MCAT, letters of recommendation, interviews, and "demonstrated motivation for medicine and helping others." Its mission page says the MD program fosters "excellence in the lifelong goals of education, research activity, and compassionate patient care." The vision promises "an open culture of accessibility to faculty, patients, and technology" and graduates who are "leaders in the ever-changing business of healthcare without ever sacrificing their initial inspiration to care for patients." The values include high standards, respect for individuals, advancing knowledge, personal development and leadership, and commitment to health.

Because the stated purpose of the interview is to help the selection committee decide whether MCOM suits "your particular needs and goals" (MSAR), expect questions about why this program, in this city, and what you want from it. Be specific about what you have learned about MCOM, not generic about Tampa.

How to prepare for a short, remote interview

  • Lead with your motivation. "Motivation for medicine and helping others" is the criterion USF names last, and it is the one the interview can test directly.
  • Prepare for a partial file. Be ready to describe your two or three most important activities from scratch, as if the interviewer only has a title.
  • Practice your leadership story. USF's vision talks about leaders in healthcare. Have one real example of leading a team through a problem.
  • Test Microsoft Teams. Join a test call, check your camera angle and audio, and have a backup device and phone hotspot ready.
  • Prepare "Why USF?" with two facts. Use the mission language above and one specific program feature you checked yourself.

USF practice questions (written by us, not USF)

USF doesn't publish its questions. We wrote these around the criteria and mission it lists. Keep each answer to about two minutes.

  1. Tell me about yourself and how you came to medicine.
  2. Why do you want to attend USF Health Morsani College of Medicine in particular?
  3. What experience showed you that you want to help people through medicine?
  4. Tell me about a time you led a group through a difficult problem.
  5. Describe a moment when you had to learn a new technology or system quickly.
  6. What does "compassionate patient care" look like in practice, from something you saw?
  7. Tell me about a time you got something wrong and how you handled it.
  8. What do you want to do beyond clinical work, in research, leadership or education?
  9. How do you handle stress, and what has that looked like during your application year?
  10. What do you think the biggest change in healthcare will be in the next ten years, and how will you prepare for it?

A drill for a remote conversation

  1. Set up a Teams call with a friend, with the camera at eye level and your notes out of sight.
  2. Have them play an interviewer who has only read your activities list. Answer "tell me about yourself" and "why USF" in under two minutes each.
  3. Ask for one follow-up on a single activity, then a second follow-up on the answer to the first.
  4. Rewatch the recording. Mark every time you answered with a general statement and fix it with one concrete moment.
  5. Do one run where you deliberately pause for two seconds before answering. It reads as thoughtful on video, not slow.

If you don't have a practice partner, Confetto's AI mock interviews ask follow-up questions based on what you actually said and give rubric-based feedback afterward. The question bank has over 500 questions, and you can start with a 7-day free trial.
