The Valley COM interview format

The Valley College of Osteopathic Medicine in Phoenix is one of the few DO schools that says plainly it uses a Multiple Mini Interview. Its How to Apply page says selected candidates are invited for an on-campus interview with faculty and staff in MMI format, alongside a campus tour and an information session. AACOM's Choose DO Explorer lists the format as Multi-Mini Interviews and in-person only, and describes Interview Day as "mandatory for admission" and a "two-way evaluation." The Valley COM does not publish the number of stations, how long each one lasts, or what the prompts look like.

What The Valley COM is looking for

The mission says the college trains osteopathic physicians "with the courage to lead, the passion to serve, a devotion to learning, and an unwavering commitment to improve the health and wellbeing of our patients and communities." The vision adds an "emphasis on meeting the healthcare needs of the underserved areas of Arizona," and the school's tagline is Care, Lead, Succeed. AACOM's description of the selection process names the qualities the Admissions Committee prioritizes: compassion, communication, teamwork, leadership, professionalism, integrity and a commitment to lifelong learning, plus resilience and a genuine interest in serving communities.

What the school namesHow it might show up in a station (our suggestion)
Communication and compassionResponding to someone upset or confused before offering a fix
Teamwork and leadershipCoordinating with a peer who sees the task differently
Integrity and professionalismWhat you do when no one would notice a shortcut
Service to underserved ArizonaWhy a specific community's access to care matters to you
Lifelong learningHow you act on feedback you did not want to hear

Timeline for the current cycle

  • AACOMAS opened May 4, 2026. The primary deadline is April 1, 2027. The Valley COM "highly" recommends submitting by January 15, 2027 and says applications are rolling, so seats can fill early.
  • Interviews begin in the early fall (AACOM). Because the process is rolling, an earlier application means an earlier interview date.
  • Minimums on the school's requirements page: a 2.8 cumulative and science GPA, a valid MCAT taken within three years, a U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status, and 44 semester hours of prerequisites (biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry and physics at 8 each, English 6, behavioral sciences 6). Labs may be taken in person or online.
  • Letters: the school's page lists two letters of recommendation and AACOM says a physician letter (MD or DO) is required. Confirm the exact mix with admissions before you submit.
  • Orientation for the entering class is July 19, 2027 (AACOM). The deposit is $2,500, with $1,500 more due May 30, 2027.

A new school: what to know

The Valley COM was founded in 2023 and holds COCA pre-accreditation status. Its program page lists a target class size of 180. The curriculum is called Patient Informed Case Based Osteopathic Education, with small-group case learning, early community and clinical exposure, simulation, virtual and augmented reality anatomy, and a COMPass advising program. If you are asked why you chose a newer school over longer-established ones, have a specific answer. A good answer names something specific: the case-based format, the Arizona focus, the advising model, or the chance to help shape a young program. "It was the first to invite me" is not that answer.

How to prepare

  1. Practice short, timed responses. Even without published station times, MMI stations are brief. Practice answering a prompt in about five minutes, with an opening, one example and a close.
  2. Prepare for scenarios, not only stories. Expect at least some stations that ask what you would do in a situation. Say what you would do, then explain why, then name what you would check first.
  3. Know the Arizona angle. Read the mission and vision. Have an honest, specific reason for caring about underserved communities in Arizona. If you are not from there, say so and explain what draws you.
  4. Know what a DO is. Be ready to say why osteopathic medicine, in your own words, and what you have seen of it. Do not claim hands-on skills you have not been trained in.
  5. Do three full runs. Back-to-back stations with only short breaks, and record at least one.

Practice questions (written by us, not The Valley COM)

The Valley COM does not publish its MMI prompts. We wrote these around its mission and the qualities it names. They are for practice and do not predict what you will be asked.

  1. Why osteopathic medicine, and why The Valley COM?
  2. Tell me about a time you worked with a team member who disagreed with you. What did you do?
  3. A patient says they cannot afford a medication you want them to take. What do you say?
  4. A classmate has been arriving late and missing work, and others are starting to cover for them. What do you do?
  5. Arizona summers are extremely hot. How might heat affect health in your community, and what could a physician do about it?
  6. Describe a time you led without a title.
  7. You see a colleague take a shortcut that could harm a patient. Walk me through your next ten minutes.
  8. A patient wants a treatment you believe will not help. How do you respond?
  9. What does "caring for people, not just patients" mean to you?
  10. Tell me about feedback that changed how you work.
  11. Some Arizona communities are a long drive from the nearest physician. What would you want to know before offering a solution?
  12. What question were you hoping we would ask?

A 40-minute MMI practice run

  1. Recruit a friend or two to act as raters. Ask them to read each prompt aloud and say nothing else for the full timer.
  2. Pick six prompts from the list above and run them back to back, five minutes each, with a short break after every two.
  3. After each station, have them tell you in one sentence what you wanted them to understand. If it does not match your intent, tighten the opening.
  4. Record the whole run. Watch one scenario answer and check whether you named a first step, a reason and a risk.
  5. Repeat the two weakest prompts the next day without notes.
