Preparing for the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine interview
UMKC's M.D. interview: the 11-station MMI the AAMC lists, virtual or in person, 2026-27 dates, core competencies, and practice stations we wrote.

The UMKC School of Medicine interview format
The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) School of Medicine runs a standard four-year M.D. program for applicants with a degree (classes begin in January) and, separately, a six-year B.A./M.D. program for students coming out of high school. This guide is about the M.D. program. The AAMC's MSAR interview procedures report for the 2027 entering class lists UMKC's format as a "Multiple-Mini Interview" with "an 11-station multiple-mini interview designed to assess non-cognitive attributes and experiences," and says phone interviews are not permitted.
The school's own application page is less detailed about the format. It says the Council on Selection decides who is interviewed, that "All candidates invited to interview will interview virtually with the School of Medicine for the 2026 cycle," and that "A holistic and individualized process is used when considering candidates, and selection is based on the core competencies of the School of Medicine."
| Item | What UMKC and the AAMC say |
|---|---|
| Format | 11-station multiple-mini interview, aimed at non-cognitive attributes and experiences (AAMC MSAR) |
| Virtual or in person | UMKC says virtual for the 2026 cycle; the AAMC entry says in person. Go by your invitation. |
| When | Interview invitations in early September; interviews in mid-September; offers in early October |
| Who decides | The Council on Selection: faculty, administration and students |
| Attendance | You must attend at the date and time you confirm; no phone interviews (AAMC MSAR) |
What UMKC doesn't publish: station length, prompt types or a scoring rubric. Because the AAMC and the school disagree about virtual or in person, don't plan around either until you read your invitation.
UMKC's timeline
- AMCAS: submit by July 1, with official transcripts to AMCAS by July 15 and the application verified by August 1.
- UMKC application: the General Application for Admission to UMKC and the supplemental portal are due August 8, with a $50 application fee. The school says applications aren't reviewed if materials are late.
- Early September: offers to interview, and a waitlist for interviews.
- Mid-September: interviews. Early October: offers of admission, with a $1,000 deposit to hold a seat.
- January: classes begin.
- Requirements: a minimum 3.0 GPA, a minimum 495 MCAT (the July MCAT is the last accepted for initial review, the August MCAT for final review of interviewed applicants), and upper-level biochemistry, genetics and cell biology with a B or better. Out-of-state applicants outside Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Illinois need a 3.5 GPA.
UMKC gives preference to Missouri residents and to applicants from Arkansas, Illinois, Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma. We didn't find a Casper or PREview requirement on the M.D. admissions pages.
What UMKC looks for
UMKC's core competencies document says they are "the foundation for all educational experiences, as well as the selection of new students." They include communication and interpersonal skills, interprofessional collaboration, professionalism ("respect, compassion, empathy, altruism, honesty and accountability"), moral reasoning and ethical judgment, coping with stress and leadership, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, systems-based practice, and patient care. The school says compassion, honesty and integrity "receive the same priority as scientific and technical skills."
The program overview describes docent teams of 10 to 12 students with a docent physician, a clinical pharmacologist, a librarian and other health professionals, and half a day each week for three and a half years in continuing care clinics at partner hospitals. Students also run the Sojourner Clinic, a free outpatient clinic, and take part in the Kansas City Free Eye Clinic. Those are concrete things to mention when asked why UMKC.
How to prepare for UMKC's MMI
- Prepare for many short stations. Eleven stations means eleven fresh starts. Practice finishing one prompt, taking a breath and moving on.
- Study the competencies. Each one is a station theme in disguise: communication, teamwork, ethics, stress management, systems.
- Practice non-cognitive skills. The AAMC entry says the MMI is designed to assess non-cognitive attributes and experiences. Prepare for empathy, ethical reasoning and communication prompts, not science questions.
- Be ready to talk about hands-on learning. Understand the docent team model and be able to explain why early, continuing patient contact appeals to you.
- Prepare for Kansas City. Know a few things about the community's health needs and the clinics students run.
- Don't plan around the setting. Check your invitation: practice for both a virtual and an in-person MMI.
UMKC practice stations (written by us, not UMKC)
UMKC doesn't publish its MMI prompts. These are ours, built around the school's core competencies. Give yourself about two minutes per answer, or longer if the prompt calls for it.
- A patient asks you to explain their diagnosis, but a family member insists you shouldn't tell them. What do you do?
- Describe a time you had to communicate with someone who spoke a different language or came from a different culture.
- You are on a team where two members disagree about the plan, and both are looking at you. What do you do?
- Tell me about a time you had to manage stress in a way that helped other people stay calm.
- You see a colleague make a small error that could harm a patient. What do you do?
- A free clinic is short of volunteers on a night when a lot of patients come in. How do you decide how to spend your time?
- Describe a time you had to act with integrity when no one would have known otherwise.
- What does it mean to learn with a team of peers and physicians for your whole training?
- How would you explain to a classmate why altruism matters, if they said it was a nice idea but not practical?
- Why a program that puts students in clinics from the first year?

A drill for the UMKC MMI
- Choose eleven prompts from the list above and from our MMI guide and shuffle them.
- Answer each one for a fixed time, with a short break and no notes in between.
- After every third station, write one line on what you would cut and one on what you'd add.
- Do a second round two days later with different prompts, focusing on starting well.
- Practice once virtual and once standing up with a partner, so either setting feels familiar.
If you don't have a practice partner, Confetto's AI mock interviews ask follow-up questions based on what you actually said and give rubric-based feedback afterward. The question bank has over 500 questions, and you can start with a 7-day free trial.
UMKC interview FAQ
Is the UMKC interview an MMI?
The AAMC MSAR entry says it is an 11-station MMI. The school's M.D. admissions pages don't describe the format, so confirm it in your invitation.
Is it virtual or in person?
UMKC says all candidates invited to interview will interview virtually for the 2026 cycle. The AAMC entry says in person. The school's own page is the better guide, but check your invitation.
Is this the B.A./M.D. program?
No. The B.A./M.D. is a six-year program for high school applicants. This guide covers the M.D. program for applicants with a degree.
Why does the class start in January?
UMKC says applicants admitted to the M.D. program matriculate in January.
Is UMKC the same as the University of Missouri in Columbia?
No. They are separate schools with separate applications. Our guide to the University of Missouri School of Medicine is linked below.
