University of Nebraska College of Medicine (UNMC) interview guide: format, timeline and practice questions

The University of Nebraska College of Medicine interview format

The University of Nebraska College of Medicine, part of the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) in Omaha, holds its MD interview day virtually for the 2026-27 cycle. The AAMC's MSAR interview procedures report for the 2027 entering class describes a "full day experience through Zoom" with "a range of group presentations and small group interactions throughout the day." It states that "each applicant will be interviewed for thirty minutes," that fourth-year medical students serve as ambassadors and answer questions, that invitations are by invitation only starting in July 2026, and that regional interviews aren't available.

UNMC's MD admissions page adds the schedule: interview day "typically is from 9 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. CST on a date selected by the applicant." After you're selected, you receive an electronic secondary application to pick a date and upload your photo.

UNMC's timeline for 2026-27

From UNMC's admissions page:

  • Early Decision Program: AMCAS due August 1, 2026, with notification of a decision by October 1, 2026.
  • Regular cycle: AMCAS due November 2, 2026. Supplemental applications are due November 20, 2026, and letters of recommendation December 1.
  • UNMC says you won't be considered for an interview if you don't complete the supplemental.

We didn't find Casper or PREview requirements on UNMC's MD admissions pages. Check your supplemental instructions for the current rules.

What UNMC says the interview is for

UNMC states the purpose plainly: "The primary objective of the interview is to focus on the applicant's personality, general functioning, and capabilities, not upon intellectual achievements." That's why academic credentials aren't shared with the interviewer until the interview is over. A 30-minute conversation at UNMC is meant to show who you are, not to re-check your GPA.

The page also says what to expect. Applicants "can expect to be asked to respond to questions about the development of their thinking about a career in medicine, the positions of responsibility they have held, their leisure time pursuits or people who have been influential in their lives." Interviewers are "especially interested in assessing candidates' abilities to develop rapport and to communicate ideas effectively." And you'll have a chance "to discuss or display those factors about which they feel particularly positive and explain aspects of their application which may raise questions."

That last line is useful. If your application has a gap, a grade dip or a late change of direction, UNMC is saying the interview is the place to explain it. Prepare a calm, brief, forward-looking explanation instead of hoping nobody asks.

UNMC's curriculum and mission

UNMC's curriculum page describes three phases: Foundations of Medicine (18 months), Clinical Applications (12 months) and Career Preparation (13 months). Phase 1 integrates basic, clinical and health systems sciences in organ-system blocks. The program page adds small-group sessions where students examine patient scenarios and practice on simulators, six scientific domains (including health systems science and population science), and training in Omaha and Kearney. The curriculum page states its aim as physicians prepared "to work collaboratively with other health professionals" for "patients and populations throughout Nebraska and the surrounding region."

The college's mission is "to lead the world in transforming lives to create a healthy future for all individuals and communities through premier educational programs, innovative research and extraordinary patient care." Its vision includes "our historic commitment to community health." The college's community service page describes the student-run SHARING Clinic, which provides free and low-cost care to underserved populations in the Omaha area.

Two themes to weave into "Why UNMC?": interprofessional teamwork, and service to a community and region. Back each with a real example from your own work.

How to prepare for a rapport-first interview

  • Write your development-of-interest story. UNMC names "the development of their thinking about a career in medicine." Start with how the interest began, then show the steps, not just the conclusion.
  • List your positions of responsibility. Know your role, your scope and one decision you made in each.
  • Prepare your leisure answer. A real interest, said with enthusiasm, shows personality. Don't invent a hobby.
  • Name an influential person. Explain what they did and what you do differently because of them.
  • Practice building rapport on video. Look at the camera, don't read from notes, and let the interviewer finish before you start.

UNMC practice questions (written by us, not UNMC)

UNMC doesn't publish its questions. We wrote these around the topics it says to expect. Keep each answer to about two minutes.

  1. How did your thinking about a career in medicine develop?
  2. Tell me about a position of responsibility you held. What was hardest about it?
  3. Who has influenced you most, and what did you take from them?
  4. What do you do in your free time, and what does it say about you?
  5. What is something about your application you'd like me to understand better?
  6. Tell me about a time you built trust with someone quickly.
  7. Describe a time you explained a complicated idea to someone with no background in it.
  8. Why do you want to train in Nebraska and care for patients in this region?
  9. What would you contribute to a team that includes nurses, pharmacists and other health professionals?
  10. Tell me about a time you made a decision you weren't sure about.

A drill for a conversational interview

  1. Choose four questions: your path to medicine, a position of responsibility, a rapport question and "something about my application."
  2. Answer each on video in about two minutes, with the camera at eye level and notes out of sight.
  3. Have a partner interrupt you politely with a follow-up halfway through one answer. Practice pausing, answering and returning to your point.
  4. Watch the recording. Mark the moments where your tone went flat or you read from memory. Rapport shows in eye contact and pace.
  5. For the "explain something about my application" question, write three sentences: what happened, what you did about it, what changed. Practice saying them once, without defensiveness.

If you don't have a practice partner, Confetto's AI mock interviews ask follow-up questions based on what you actually said and give rubric-based feedback afterward. The question bank has over 500 questions, and you can start with a 7-day free trial.
