The RVU-MCOM interview format

Rocky Vista University's Montana College of Osteopathic Medicine (RVU-MCOM) in Billings is a separate program from RVU's Colorado and Utah campus, with its own application and its own admissions page. Its page says the Office of Admissions pre-screens academic qualifications and offers interviews to competitive applicants. The interview is virtual: "approximately 30 minutes long and conducted by a two-person panel from the RVU-MCOM team." The interviewers "will have access to the applicant's personal statement, supplemental application, and letters of recommendation," but "will be blinded to the applicants' grades and MCAT scores." AACOM adds that the interview is "relaxed and conversational," that questions come only from the supplemental application and non-academic information in the primary application, and that interviewers are "selected by the MCOM Office of Admissions." Interviewers submit recommendations, the Admissions Committee reviews them, and the Dean makes the final decision.

What RVU-MCOM is looking for

The mission is "to educate and inspire students to become highly competent osteopathic physicians and lifelong learners prepared to meet the diverse health care needs of tomorrow through innovative education, relevant research, and compassionate service." AACOM says RVU "seeks applicants who are not only academically prepared but also demonstrate a strong commitment to osteopathic principles, service, leadership, and professionalism," with critical thinking and problem-solving skills and a deep understanding of patient-centered, holistic care. It values "diverse life experiences, a passion for community service, and a dedication to improving healthcare access, especially in underserved areas," and says applicants who can show resilience, teamwork and a genuine desire to contribute to the osteopathic community will stand out. RVU's page describes the Montana program as built on early osteopathic clinical skills integration, a supportive and active learning environment that emphasizes health and wellness, and integrated simulation.

What the school namesHow it might show up in your answers (our suggestion)
Commitment to osteopathic principlesWhat you know and what you have seen, in your own words
Service and underserved accessA specific community and a specific barrier to care
Resilience and teamworkA setback you handled with other people, not alone
Culture fitThe way you want to learn alongside classmates and faculty
Leadership and professionalismA choice you made when it cost you something

Timeline for the current cycle

  • AACOMAS opened May 4, 2026 and the primary deadline is April 30, 2027. Admissions are rolling, and AACOM says interviews may finish before the deadline if all seats are filled.
  • The supplemental fee is $60 and AACOM lists June 11, 2027 as the supplemental deadline. Applicants need a verified AACOMAS application, a 3.0 GPA (cumulative and science) and a qualifying MCAT taken within three years. Fee waivers are available, including for active duty military, veterans and immediate family members, per RVU's page.
  • Requirements: a bachelor's degree before matriculation, a C or better in prerequisites, and no minimum MCAT score. RVU gives preference to applicants with a science and cumulative GPA of 3.6 or higher.
  • Letters: three, all through AACOMAS. An academic reference, a credentialed healthcare provider (DO, MD, PA or NP) who supervised your clinical work, and a third of your choice. Letters sent directly or through Interfolio and VirtualEvals are not accepted.
  • The Early Decision date for this cycle (July 14, 2026) has passed. AACOM lists the start of classes as July 12, 2027.
  • RVU says it will consider international applicants and requires demonstrated English proficiency during the interview.

The Montana campus: what to know

RVU-MCOM was founded in 2022 and is accredited by COCA. AACOM lists 171 first-year matriculants for 2025-26, 15 of them from Montana. It sits on a 138,000-square-foot campus in Billings with a Simulation in Medicine and Surgery center, an anatomy lab with cadavers and virtual reality, and an osteopathic clinical skills lab. If you are asked why Montana, strong answers are concrete: the region, the rural and underserved need, or the early clinical-skills model. "I wanted a mountain town" is not a reason an interviewer can weigh. Because the interviewers are blinded to your grades and MCAT, the conversation is about your experience, motivation and character, not your numbers.

Our guide to the Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine interview covers the Colorado and Utah campuses, which have a separate application.

How to prepare

  1. Know your supplemental application cold. Questions come from it, so re-read what you wrote and be ready to go deeper on any claim.
  2. Prepare a motivation story. Because interviewers cannot see your numbers, the "why medicine, why osteopathic, why this program" answer carries a lot of weight. Practice it until it sounds like you.
  3. Keep it conversational. The interview is meant to feel relaxed. Practice answering in two minutes or less and then stopping, so there is room for a follow-up.
  4. Prepare for a two-person panel. Look at the camera, address whoever asked and acknowledge both.
  5. Test your setup. A quiet room, a stable connection and a camera at eye level.

Practice questions (written by us, not RVU)

RVU does not publish its interview questions. We wrote these around its mission and what AACOM says it values. They are for practice and do not predict what you will be asked.

  1. Walk me through why you want to be an osteopathic physician.
  2. Why RVU-MCOM, and why Montana?
  3. Tell me about a time you worked with a team through a setback.
  4. Describe a barrier to health care in a place you know well. What would you do about it?
  5. What does patient-centered, holistic care mean to you in a ten-minute visit?
  6. Tell me about a time you put others ahead of what you wanted.
  7. Pick one thing in your supplemental application and tell me more.
  8. A patient lives two hours from your clinic and cannot always come. What do you try?
  9. How do you learn best, and how would you contribute to a small group?
  10. Tell me about a time you were wrong and what you changed.
  11. What does a healthy, active learning environment look like to you?
  12. What would you like us to know that is not in your application?

A 30-minute practice run

  1. Recruit two people to play the panel. Give them your supplemental application, but not your grades.
  2. Ask them to run a 30-minute conversation. They should draw most questions from your supplemental and from the list above.
  3. Run it on Zoom with your camera at eye level. Keep answers to about two minutes.
  4. Record it. Watch two answers and check whether you gave a specific example and answered what was asked.
  5. Ask what they would still want to know, and add that detail next time.
