The Rocky Vista interview format

Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine (RVUCOM) interviews applicants online, in a single conversation of about 30 minutes. RVUCOM's admissions page says the virtual interviews "will be approximately 30 minutes in length and conducted by a two-person panel of the RVUCOM team," and that accepted students are offered an official campus visit day afterward.

The most useful detail for your prep is what your interviewers can and can't see. They have your personal statement, your supplemental application and your letters of recommendation. They are blinded to your grades and MCAT score. So this is a conversation about you, your experiences and your judgment, not your numbers.

Sources: RVUCOM Admissions, the RVU catalog's interview process page, and RVUCOM's AACOM Choose DO Explorer profile, checked October 2026. AACOM's profile describes the interview as relaxed and conversational. RVU doesn't publish an agenda for the interview day.

Which Rocky Vista are you interviewing with?

Rocky Vista runs two osteopathic programs, and it helps to be clear about which one you applied to.

  • RVUCOM has two campuses, Parker, Colorado (south of Denver) and Ivins, Utah (near St. George). They share one AACOMAS designation. This guide is about RVUCOM.
  • The Montana College of Osteopathic Medicine (MCOM), in Billings, is a separate program with its own application. If that's where you're interviewing, check the MCOM admissions page for its own details.

If you have a reason to prefer Colorado or Utah, be ready to say it. Some RVUCOM opportunities are campus-specific (the Urban Underserved track is offered in Colorado only), so check before you mention one.

What RVUCOM is looking for

RVUCOM's mission is to "educate and inspire students to become highly competent osteopathic physicians and lifelong learners prepared to meet the diverse healthcare needs of tomorrow through compassionate service, relevant research, and innovative education." The university lists its values as collegiality, compassion, diversity, equity, excellence, inclusivity, innovation, integrity and service. AACOM's profile says the school wants "well-rounded, service-oriented individuals."

Because your interviewers have your essays and letters but not your scores, expect questions that dig into what you wrote. If your personal statement mentions a patient, a job or a turning point, assume someone will ask you to say more about it.

Mission or valueHow it might show up (our suggestion)
Compassionate serviceA service commitment you kept up, and what you learned about the people on the other side of it
Diverse healthcare needsA time you cared for or worked with someone whose background changed what "good care" meant
Lifelong learningSomething you taught yourself, or feedback you used to get better
CollegialityA team that worked well or badly, and your part in it
IntegrityA time doing the right thing cost you something
Innovation and researchAny project you can explain clearly: the question, what you did, what you found

Programs worth knowing before your interview

You don't need to memorize RVU's website, but you should know enough to answer "Why RVUCOM?" with something more specific than mountains. These are on the school's own pages:

  • Optional tracks. RVU describes its tracks as "competitive, optional, curricular programs, outside of the core curriculum." They are Academic Medicine and Leadership, Digital Health, Global Medicine, Physician Scientist, Rural and Wilderness Medicine, and Urban Underserved Medicine (Colorado only).
  • Military Medicine Program. RVU has a dedicated program for students headed into military service.
  • Simulation. The university runs an Office of Simulation in Medicine and Surgery. RVU says its simulation center was the first at an osteopathic school to be accredited by the American College of Surgeons.

Only bring up a track or program if it honestly connects to something you've done. "I've worked two summers as a backcountry ranger, so the Rural and Wilderness track is the reason I applied" is strong. Listing all six tracks is not.

Timeline for the current cycle

  • AACOMAS opened May 4, 2026. AACOM lists the RVUCOM AACOMAS deadline as April 30, 2027.
  • The supplemental application goes to screened applicants. AACOM lists the fee as $60, with waivers available.
  • Admissions is rolling. RVU warns that "it is feasible that all interviews will be awarded" before the supplemental deadline, so apply early.
  • Interviews run on Zoom from the fall through the spring.
  • Letters: three, through AACOMAS. One from a credentialed provider (DO, MD, PA or NP) who supervised you in a clinical setting, one academic reference, and one of your choice.

Some dates on RVU's own pages are carried over from earlier cycles, so confirm deadlines in your portal or with the admissions office.

How to prepare

  1. Reread everything they've read. Your personal statement, your supplemental answers, and whatever you know about your letters. Make a list of every experience mentioned, and practice talking about each for two minutes, including what you'd do differently.
  2. Write your "why" answers. Why medicine, why osteopathic medicine, why RVUCOM. For the last one, connect the mission, a track or the campus setting to something real in your history.
  3. Prepare for two interviewers. With a panel of two, one may ask while the other takes notes, or they may trade questions. Answer the person who asked, then include the other person as you finish.
  4. Set up for Zoom. Camera at eye level, light in front of you, a plain background, and a wired connection if you can. Do a test call with a friend at the same time of day as your interview.
  5. Do three timed mocks of about 30 minutes. One should be with someone who has read your personal statement and asks about it.

Practice questions (written by us, not Rocky Vista)

RVU doesn't publish its interview questions. We wrote these to fit the school's mission, values and programs. They're for practice and don't predict what you'll be asked.

  1. Walk me through your path to osteopathic medicine. Start wherever the story really starts.
  2. Your personal statement mentions an experience that changed your mind about something. Tell me more about it.
  3. Why RVUCOM, and why the campus you'd prefer?
  4. Our mission talks about "the diverse healthcare needs of tomorrow." What's one need you think will grow in the next ten years, and how would you prepare for it?
  5. Tell me about a time you served people who didn't share your background. What surprised you?
  6. A hiker is injured two hours from the nearest hospital and you're the only person with medical training. What are you thinking about in the first five minutes?
  7. A patient wants you to rely on a home remedy instead of the treatment you recommend. How do you handle it?
  8. Describe a time you disagreed with someone you respected. How did it end?
  9. Tell me about a time you failed at something you cared about.
  10. What does "collegiality" look like in a class of medical students competing for residency spots?
  11. If you joined one of our optional tracks, which one, and what would you want to have done by graduation?
  12. What question were you hoping we'd ask today?

Our free question bank preview has more medical school interview questions, and the full bank has over 500.

A 30-minute practice run

  1. Recruit two people to play the panel. Give one your personal statement and give the other nothing.
  2. Have them choose eight questions between them from the list above, including at least two that come from your personal statement.
  3. Run it on Zoom, cameras on, for 30 minutes. They should ask follow-ups instead of moving straight to the next question.
  4. Record it. Afterward, watch two answers and check three things: did you look at the camera, did you finish with a clear point, and did you answer what was asked.
  5. Ask each person which answer they remember best and which one they'd forget. Rework the forgettable one with a more specific story.
