Checked October 2026 against Carle Illinois: Admissions FAQ, Carle Illinois: Before You Apply and AAMC MSAR 2027 interview report. Confirm details in your invitation.
Carle Illinois College of Medicine doesn't hold admissions interviews. In the AAMC's MSAR interview report for the 2027 class, the school says "Carle Illinois College of Medicine does not conduct interviews." Its own admissions FAQ adds "We do not do in-person interviews."
The step that takes the interview's place is the secondary application. After an initial screen, eligible applicants get a free secondary that the FAQ says "will consist of a portfolio and video response to questions." The video response is the part to rehearse out loud.
The most competitive applicants may also be invited to events. The school says these "do not include any evaluation," but applicants are still expected to be professional (checked October 24, 2026).

What isn't published
Carle Illinois doesn't publish its video questions, how long you get to answer, the platform it uses, or a scoring rubric. Its deadlines page still shows the 2026 entering class, so go by the instructions in your secondary email for exact dates.
What the secondary asks you to show
The How to Apply page frames the secondary around one question: "Why is engineering-infused medicine right for you and how will you use it to change the world?" It adds that this is the school's "chance to make sure our character and values align."
- Competencies, not just prerequisites. Carle Illinois checks 11 competency areas, including multivariate calculus, differential equations and linear algebra. You need at least 7 of the 11 done to receive a secondary, and at least 9 by the time you enroll.
- Portfolio evidence. Research reports, papers, coding examples and letters from a supervisor can count as evidence of competency, alongside course syllabi.
- Confidential work. If a project you describe is confidential, the FAQ says to mark that information clearly and highlight it in yellow.
- Letters. Three or four letters through the AMCAS Letter Service. The school asks for writers who can speak to your skill in STEAM, your work ethic and engagement, leadership and teamwork, and your potential to be a successful innovator.
- No updates. The school doesn't accept updates after it receives your secondary, so put your strongest material in the first time.
- No SJT. Carle Illinois doesn't require a situational judgment test. The MCAT minimum is 498, and there is no minimum GPA.
What Carle Illinois is built around
Your video answers will land better if they show you know the school. The admissions page calls Carle Illinois "the first college of medicine in the world specifically designed at the intersection of engineering and medicine."
- Physician Innovators. That's the school's own name for its graduates, trained in medicine and engineering.
- Team-based cases. Problem-based learning is the backbone of the organ-based courses, with team-based learning in most courses. Each week centers on one or two real cases worked through in a small group.
- Clinic early. Students work in the clinic in their first 10 days.
- Building things. In the IDEA projects course, students meet with engineering partners to generate ideas for health care problems they see during clerkships. One IDEA project can become the fourth-year capstone, or students can do a data science project instead.
- Discovery learning. A six-week block at the end of the first year, with global, clinical, research or self-designed options.
A strong answer to why you chose Carle Illinois names one health care problem you've seen up close and what you'd want to build or test to fix it. Generic interest in technology won't stand out at a school built on this idea.
How to prepare for the video responses
- Answer the school's own question first. Draft a 60 to 90 second answer on why engineering-infused medicine fits you, one that ties one real experience to one idea for change.
- Bring a project you can explain simply. Pick one piece of research, code or design work and practice explaining what you did, what went wrong and what you'd change, for a listener who isn't in your field.
- Show the teamwork side. The curriculum runs on small teams, and the letters ask about leadership and teamwork. Have one story about a team that struggled and what you did.
- Rehearse on camera. Record each answer, watch it back, and check that your main point comes in the first 15 seconds.
- Follow the instructions exactly. Use whatever time limits and format your secondary email gives you. Don't assume they match another school's video step.
Confetto, an AI mock interviewer for medical school and other healthcare program interviews (MMI, traditional, panel), has one-way video interview practice with think and response timers, which is the closest match to a recorded video response.

A drill for a recorded video response
Show the drill
- Pick four prompts from the list above, including question 1 and question 2.
- Give yourself 30 seconds to think, then answer each on camera without stopping, as you would in a one-take recording.
- Watch it back with the sound off. Are you looking at the lens, and do you look engaged?
- Watch it again with sound. Write down the one sentence a viewer would remember. If you can't find one, rewrite the answer around a single example.
- Repeat two days later without notes.
