Central Michigan College of Medicine interview guide
CMU's virtual MMI plus small group activities: the two-hour format, 2026-27 dates, optional Casper, the personal attributes it lists, and practice stations.

The Central Michigan University College of Medicine interview format
Central Michigan University's College of Medicine (called "Covenant HealthCare College of Medicine at Central Michigan University" on its own pages, and "Central Michigan University College of Medicine" in the AAMC's MSAR) uses a virtual Multiple Mini-Interview. The school's admissions FAQ says it "utilizes a Multiple Mini-Interview (MMI) format," that "no prior medical knowledge is required," and that the interview portion lasts "approximately two hours and includes breaks." Applicants also "work together in various small group exercises." The AAMC's MSAR report for the 2027 class lists "Multiple-Mini Interview (MMI), small and large group activities."
| Item | What CMU and the AAMC say |
|---|---|
| Format | Multiple Mini-Interview plus small group activities |
| Virtual or in person | Virtual (the MSAR says all interviews are currently conducted virtually) |
| Length | About two hours of interviewing, including breaks |
| Start times | Staggered: you are assigned 10:00 a.m., 11:10 a.m. or 12:20 p.m. |
| Interviewers | Faculty, staff, current medical students and members of the university community |
| Station themes | Each station is a pre-developed scenario on a single theme, such as ethical decision-making, critical thinking or communication |
| Interview days | "Select Fridays from September until March" (FAQ); the process page says August to March |
What CMU doesn't publish on its current pages: the number or length of stations, a scoring rubric, or sample scenarios. The process page still says "2023 AMCAS cycle" and "approximately 450 applicants will be invited," so we treat those details as old and go by your invitation email for dates. We also did not find a regular-decision AMCAS deadline on the pages we read: check the AAMC listing.
CMU's 2026-27 timeline
- Early Decision: for Michigan residents who are enrolled at or graduated from a Michigan public or private university, with a 3.5 GPA and 503 MCAT minimum. Application and secondary materials due August 1, an MMI in mid-August, a decision targeted by August 30, and an AMCAS deadline of October 1.
- Regular cycle: a secondary application ($100, waived with AMCAS fee assistance) is by invitation, and CMU says an applicant "could remain without an interview decision until February."
- Interviews: invitations begin in August (MSAR). CMU decides on a rolling basis and asks accepted applicants to respond within two weeks.
- Road to Matriculation: every invited applicant can join live presentations on all four years of the curriculum, including the Comprehensive Community Clerkship, and a Q&A panel with current students.
- Class size and letters: 104 seats per class. CMU requires at least three letters (or a committee letter) and allows up to five.
What CMU looks for
CMU uses what it calls a "mission-aligned admissions process" on its requirements page, and lists the personal attributes it considers: reliability and dependability, service orientation, teamwork, resilience, cultural awareness, compassion and empathy, integrity and ethical behavior, and commitment to the college's mission. The about page says the college "educates diverse students and trains culturally competent physicians to provide comprehensive health care and services to underserved populations in Michigan and beyond" and "focuses on recruiting students from Michigan who want to become doctors for Michigan."
The process page says each station rotates you to a new interviewer with a pre-developed scenario on a single theme, and names ethical decision-making, critical thinking and communication as examples. The curriculum page describes a 16-week longitudinal integrated clerkship in primary care, primarily in rural or urban underserved areas of Michigan. Those are good, specific hooks for a "why CMU" answer.
On Casper, CMU says it is "an optional component," that it "does not factor into our application evaluation process," and that the school thinks it is good practice for the MMI format.
How to prepare for CMU's interview
- Prepare for scenario stations. Each station is a short scenario on one theme. Practice thinking out loud: state the issue, name who is affected, weigh options, then commit to a plan.
- Prepare for the group activities. The day includes small group exercises. Show you can contribute and invite others in, without taking over.
- Know the eight attributes. For each of reliability, teamwork, resilience, cultural awareness, compassion, integrity and mission commitment, have a real example.
- Know why Michigan. CMU focuses on Michigan students who want to practice in Michigan. Be ready to explain your connection and what you would want to do for underserved communities there.
- Read the scenario fully, then talk. Use the reading time. A calm first sentence beats a fast wrong one.
- Check your setup. Your start time is staggered, so confirm it in your invitation and test your camera and audio in advance.
CMU practice questions (written by us, not CMU)
CMU doesn't publish its MMI scenarios. These stations are ours, shaped around the themes and attributes the school names. Practice each aloud, with a timer.
- Your friend on a group project has not done their part, and the deadline is tomorrow. What do you do?
- A patient refuses a treatment you think is clearly best for them. How do you approach the conversation?
- Why do you want to practice medicine in Michigan, and in what kind of community?
- Describe a time you showed resilience when something did not go the way you planned.
- A classmate tells you they saw another student copy answers on an exam. What are your options?
- Explain to the interviewer, who has no medical background, why hand washing matters in a hospital. You have two minutes.
- Describe a time you worked with someone from a very different cultural background. What did you learn?
- Group task: you and two others have to decide how to allocate a limited number of clinic appointments. How would you start?
- Tell me about a time you made a decision that was right but unpopular.
- What is one thing in your application you would like to talk about more, and why?

A drill for the CMU interview
- Pick four prompts: one ethics scenario, one teamwork scenario, one communication scenario and one on why Michigan.
- Answer each in two minutes on camera, in the setup you'll use on interview day.
- Watch it with the sound off. Are you looking at the lens and nodding when you listen?
- Have a partner give two follow-ups per answer: "Where did you make a decision?" and "What would you do differently?"
- Rewrite each story as three bullets and repeat it two days later, without reading.
If you don't have a practice partner, Confetto's AI mock interviews ask follow-up questions based on what you actually said and give rubric-based feedback afterward. The question bank has over 500 questions, and you can start with a 7-day free trial.
