Fluent on paper

You are getting ready with the wedding party in a dressing room before a friend's wedding.

Your close friend Thandiwe applied last week for a job at the company run by the groom's uncle and wrote that she is fluent in Spanish; the role includes calls with clients in Mexico. On your trip to Spain with her and Wayan, she chatted easily with waiters and drivers but struggled with anything formal. Wayan is fixing his tie beside you.

The scene

Thandiwe: If his uncle asks, say my Spanish is great. You heard me in Seville.

Wayan: You argued us out of a parking fine there. I'd call that fluent.

Thandiwe: Five months without work. I can't lose this over one word.

Wayan: It's one sentence at a party. Don't make it weird.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Thandiwe, and why?
  2. 2Where is the line between presenting yourself in the best light and being dishonest?
