Say I left on my own
You are a shift supervisor at a garden supply warehouse.
Your friend Nate was let go last month for repeated lateness on the six a.m. shift, during the months he was driving his mother to early appointments. A new employer is calling you for a reference this afternoon. He has come by to return his locker key and finds you in the break room with a coworker, Jo.
The scene
Nate: When they call, say I left on my own. One word about lateness and I'm out.
Jo: He was late because of his mom's appointments. That's over now.
Nate: This job starts at ten. I'm two months behind on rent.
Jo: It's hardly a lie. So what are you going to tell them?
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Nate, and what would you tell the employer?
- 2Describe a time a friend asked you for something you were not comfortable giving. How did you handle it?
