Am I wrong to worry?

You are at a karaoke night for a friend's birthday.

In a rented karaoke booth, your close friend Wanjiru has just quietly told you she has been deeply depressed for months and has stopped going to work, and made you promise to tell no one. Her older sister Kaia, who has worried for weeks, sits down with you both while the rest of the party is out ordering food.

The scene

Kaia: You've missed three Sunday dinners, and Mom says your office called the house. Something's wrong.

Wanjiru: I'm tired, that's all. Please don't turn a birthday into this.

Kaia: I can't help if nobody tells me anything.

Wanjiru: There's nothing to tell.

Kaia: You two talk every day. Be straight with me. Am I wrong to worry?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Kaia, and why?
  2. 2When, if ever, is it right to break a promise to keep something secret?

What raters look for
