Keys in the driveway
You are at a backyard birthday barbecue with your close friend Elif.
As the barbecue winds down, Elif picks up her keys in the driveway. By your count she has had three drinks over six hours, with a full meal; she sounds steady, says she feels fine, and you honestly cannot tell whether she is over the limit. A ride home and back would cost more than she earns in a morning, no bus runs before her 6 a.m. shift, and you walked here. Guests are watching from the yard, and one murmurs that somebody should take her keys. You could do that, offer alternatives she may refuse, or trust her judgment.
The two questions
- 1What would you do and say in this moment?
- 2When, if ever, is it right to override a friend's choice for their own safety or other people's?
What raters look for
- Ethics
- Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
