Scene to read · Resilience, Ethics

Good friend or doormat?

You are walking with your friend Yvette along a river path at dusk, and she has just asked for your honest view.

You and Yvette, 29, are walking by the river. Yvette's friend Sam has had a very hard year and has cancelled their last four plans. Youssef, 59, is Yvette's longtime neighbor and a friend of both. He joins you on the path and knows Sam well.

The scene

Yvette: Sam cancelled again today. I keep forgiving him, Youssef, but I'm so tired.

Youssef: He's had a brutal year, Yvette. Pulling back now might feel like abandonment.

Yvette: I know. But am I being a good friend, or a doormat?

Youssef: I can't answer that for you. You tell us which it is.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Yvette, and why?
  2. 2How do you decide when to keep being patient with someone who is struggling and when to set a limit?
