Two candles

You and your friend Nell sell handmade candles at weekend craft fairs.

You both put your savings into the business a year ago. Today, at the third fair in a row, you sold two candles. As you pack up the booth, Gus, who has run the neighboring stall for years, wanders over.

The scene

Nell: Two candles. Eight hours. I'm done. Let's sell the stock and split what's left.

Gus: Want the truth? Your candles are fine. Your table looks like everyone else's.

Nell: Great. So we're boring too.

Gus: Took me four years to turn a profit. Depends how much you want it.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Nell?
  2. 2Tell us about a time you kept going, or chose to stop, after repeated disappointment. How did you decide?

What raters look for
