Scene to read · Self-awareness, Empathy
Easygoing or just agreeing?
You are a close friend of both Zadie and Zaina, visiting Zadie's apartment.
On Zadie's small balcony, you, Zadie (66) and Zaina (36) are planning a weekend trip for the three of you. Zaina has spent weeks choosing the dates and the place. Zadie always answers 'whatever works.' Both turn to you for your honest view.
The scene
Zaina: I picked dates, place, and restaurant again. Zadie, you never express preferences.
Zadie: I'm just easygoing, happy with anything. I thought that made things simpler.
Zaina: It doesn't. I keep guessing, then carry every decision alone.
Zadie: I see myself differently. You've known me longest. Am I wrong?
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Zadie and Zaina, and why?
- 2Tell us about a time someone's view of you differed from how you saw yourself. What did you do with it?
What raters look for
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
