Scene to read · Self-awareness, Empathy
I never asked
You are a college student sitting on a bench in the quad with two friends.
Three weeks ago you told your friend Casey, unasked, that his partner is controlling and he should leave her. He has avoided you since. Wayan, a returning student in your study group and a friend to you both, has steered you to the bench where Casey is sitting.
The scene
Wayan: You two haven't spoken in three weeks. I'm not leaving until somebody starts.
Casey: You called her controlling like it was nothing. I never asked what you thought.
Wayan: Casey, you told me you missed this friendship.
Casey: I do. So tell me. Do you still think I should leave her?
The two questions
- 1How would you answer Casey?
- 2When is it right to give a friend advice they did not ask for?
What raters look for
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
