Scene to read · Self-awareness, Communication
One minute, not twenty
You are in a friend's car with two close friends, Ian and Keanu.
Ian is driving you and Keanu home from dinner, where Keanu shared that he lost his job, asked how you got through your own layoff, and got a twenty-minute story. Parked outside your building, Ian turns to you in the passenger seat, with Keanu in the back. You have just started to explain yourself.
The scene
Ian: Can I say something? Every story ends up being yours. Every single one.
Keanu: I did ask how you got through yours. Just not twenty minutes of it.
Ian: Same thing at my birthday. Whose year did we toast?
Keanu: Come on, Ian, you asked for that speech. But look, you're explaining again right now.
The two questions
- 1How would you answer Ian and Keanu?
- 2How can you tell the difference between sharing your own experience to connect with someone and making the conversation about yourself?
What raters look for
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
