When Dad gets angry

You are a volunteer running the activity cart in a hospital's outpatient waiting area.

You volunteer with the activity cart in a hospital waiting area. For weeks you've played cards with a 15-year-old who brings a younger sibling to appointments. Today they say Dad hurts them when he's angry, then beg you not to tell anyone. Last year a teacher reported something, the family was questioned, nothing changed, and Dad kept them home for weeks. You know you must pass this to the volunteer coordinator, Ismael. What you say now, and how you do it, is still up to you.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to the teenager right now, and how would you handle telling them what happens next? Why?
  2. 2Describe a time someone trusted you with something difficult and you had to act on it. How did you handle the person's trust, and what did you learn?

What raters look for

Ethics
Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
