Scene to read · Ethics, Professionalism
It says any mention
You are on the volunteer staff of a big hobby site for aquarium keepers.
The site's rules say any staff member who mentions using a controlled substance must be reported and removed. Tess, a respected colleague, has posted in the private staff channel that she takes a legally prescribed cannabis-based medicine. At Shira's kitchen table, Shira, the head admin, and Idris, who is also on the staff, have the dashboard open.
The scene
Idris: It's prescribed and legal. Removing her for that would be absurd.
Shira: I wrote that rule after one admin's posts scared off our sponsors. It says any mention.
Idris: In a private staff channel? Nobody outside will ever see it.
Shira: Forty staff saw it. If I skip it for a friend, what's it worth? Your view?
The two questions
- 1What view would you give Shira and Idris, and why?
- 2When a rule produces a result its authors never intended, who should decide whether it still applies?
What raters look for
- Ethics
- Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
