Written scenario · Ethics, Communication
The card in her jacket
You answer the phone at a walk-in advice service for young people.
This morning you checked in a 14-year-old who quietly asked that her family not be told. This afternoon her father, Isamu, calls. He found an appointment card and wants to know why she came. He says she has barely eaten or spoken for weeks, and that if you will not help he will forbid her from ever returning. Your supervisor is unavailable. An on-call safeguarding contact exists, but she may take time to reach. Nothing he has said suggests she is in danger tonight.
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Isamu, and what would you do after the call ends?
- 2When, if ever, should a promise of privacy made to a young person give way to a worried parent's need to know?
What raters look for
- Ethics
- Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
