A letter from the garden bench

You are a volunteer who reads aloud to residents at a care residence.

You volunteer weekly as a reader at a care residence. Bruno, 78, has a serious long-term illness, and you have read to him on the garden bench for two years. Today he tells you, calmly, that he has decided to stop his ongoing treatments, knowing this will likely shorten his life. His adult children strongly disagree, and their last visit ended in tears. He asks you to help him write a letter urging them to accept his choice. If you help, his family may feel an outsider took sides; if you refuse, Bruno may feel abandoned by someone he trusts.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Bruno, and whose decision do you think this ultimately is?
  2. 2Describe a time you supported someone's decision that you, or people close to them, found hard to accept. How did you handle it?

What raters look for

Ethics
Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
